Cbse 3206 Math Lesson Plan

Students will learn about multiplication through grouping objects. The lesson goals are for students to represent and solve multiplication problems using manipulatives like cubes. Students will explore grouping objects to understand multiplication and see that problems like 5x7 represent 5 groups of 7 objects. To engage students, they will work with partners using different colored counting blocks or tools to solve multiplication problems by representing groups. Then students will complete an individual worksheet and have a class discussion explaining their strategies and answers.

Teacher Name: Jessica Rivera

Lesson Title: grouping and multiplying

3rd grade

Learning Goal(s): What are the goals (e.g., standards, objectives, outcomes or expectations) of this lesson?

Standard: (3.0. A.A.1) interpret products of whole numbers, interpret 5x7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects
each.

Objective: Students will be able to represents and sole problems involving multiplication by solving problems using
single cubes or other objects
Essential question: What strategies can we use to multiply whole numbers?
Expectations: Students will be able to use manipulatives and write problems to solve addition and multiplication problems. They
will explore with cubes or other objects that represent 1 to understand grouping and multiplication.

Focus and Big Ideas: What will students learn? What are the big ideas?

Students will be able to see a math problem like 5x7 and know it’s the same as 5 groups of 7 and the same as
5+5+5+5+5+5+5 They will also be able to know different strategies like addition and grouping to figure out multiplication
problems.

Open-Ended Math Problem or Activity: What task will students be engaged in?
Students will first work with a partner and explore / work on questions from the board to show grouping from multiplication
problems and then find the total. They will explain what it means and what they are doing/how they came to the answer Then
students will work on the assigned worksheet with their manipulative if needed.

Prior Skills and Knowledge: What prior skills or knowledge Connection: How does this activity connect to or build
will students need in order to accomplish the task? on something students have seen or done before?
Students should have prior knowledge of addition and Understand multiplication
subtraction, reading comprehension and being able to explain Visualize math problems through grouping
their answers. Problem solving
Activation: How will you get students thinking about what they Misconceptions or Gaps in Knowledge: What
already know that relates to the problem? might cause students to struggle with this task?
I will show how multiplication is similar to addition. For example, Students may struggle to understand what 5x7 can
they are use to 3+3+3 which is the same as 3x3 and 2+2+2+2+2 is be shown in multiple ways.
also the same as 2x5. The counting bears and grouping cups will Might not count/ group correct
help them manipulate that.

Strategy Use: What strategies do you expect to see students using? Feedback: How will you provide feedback to students
on their use of strategies?
-understanding multiplication and addition I will provide feedback through grading their worksheet
- counting and walking around helping them when needed. We
- Grouping will have a class discussion to talk about our answers
- Using the manipulative correct

Consolidation

Demonstrate Knowledge and Understanding: How will Strategy Use: How will students reflect on their use
students show what they know? of strategies?
Students will be able to show their knowledge through their work
doing with their partners using manipulatives. Students will then do Students will explain how they got their answers
problems from a worksheet on their own. when I walk around and have each group explain to
the class what they did.

Materials: What materials will students have access to?   After the lesson students will go work with
