Gas Generator Lube Oil System
The single skid lubrication oil console circulates lube oil through the gas generator for
Lubrication and supplies hydraulic oil to operate the variable inlet guide vanes.

Alarms and shutdowns
Devices throughout the system transmit information to the UCP. If an operating
parameter is too low or too high, the UCP signals an alarm or trips equipment
shutdown. To locate the current alarm and shutdown settings refer to the video
display terminal. Settings are listed by device code on the Table of Action on the
GG lube oil diagram.
Operator Screens
This screen shows the general overview of the GG lube oil system. Readings
from the devices monitoring the system are shown and the alarm and shutdown
setpoints can be viewed for the devices that are so equipped.

Oil requirements
Avoid all synthetic oil contact with your skin and eyes. The oil may be fatal
if absorbed through your skin. Read the manufacturer’s precautions for
safe use.
The following are acceptable synthetic oils for this GG:
Esso/Exxon Turbo Oil 2380
Castrol 5000
Aeroshell turbine oil 560
Set up an oil sampling procedure with the oil supplier. Check the oil acidity
at established intervals, and change the oil when necessary.

System description
Reservoir
The lube oil is pumped from reservoir. The reservoir is a stainless steel tank with
a 909 liter (240 gallon) total capacity. It is equipped with a drain connection and
a filler tank and a Demister is mounted above the reservoir.
A level transmitter is used by the Unit control panel to monitor the level. If the oil
level drops to 570 mm (23.5 in.) from the bottom of the reservoir, the UCP
sounds the low level alarm and shuts off the heater. If the oil level rises to 740
mm (29.13 in.) from the bottom of the tank the UCP to sounds the high level
alarm.
When oil temperature monitored by the UCP reaches 1 C (5 F) the pumps are
permissive to start.
Main pump and Auxiliary pump
Electric AC motors drive the main and auxiliary lube oil pumps. The auxiliary
pump is signaled to start with a low hydraulic oil pressure alarm from the UCP.
The low pressure section of the lube oil pumps supply oil from the reservoir to the
cooler and duplex filter and serve as a supply to the HP (Hydraulic) oil section of
the pump as well a supplying a Flow control Valve and a scheduling valve and on
to the GG bearings. Pressure control valves along the line help maintain a
desirable working pressure for the lube oil.
Relief valves are provided to return diverted lube oil to the reservoir.
Cooler and Mixing Valve
Before going to the filters the oil passes through a mixing valve and cooler to
control the oil temperature. The LO cooler is a plate type exchanger supplied by
others. The oil temperature is monitored after the oil exits the filters, an alarm
and shutdown are provided by the Unit Control Panel.
The Mixing or TCV maintains the lube oil temperature at the cooler discharge
between 56 and 6 C (133 to 14 F). The TCV mixes the oil passing through the
cooler with oil bypassing the cooler to maintain this temperature. High oil
temperature can indicate that the cooler or TCV is not functioning properly.

Filter
A lube oil filter assembly is located down-stream from the lube oil pumps and
cooler. The assembly consists of full–flow, duplex oil filters which remove
particles from the lube oil before it is passed on to the bearings. A three–way
valve controls the flow of oil through one or both filters. Normally, one filter is in
operation, while the other is on standby. Oil to supply the suction side of the HP
(hydraulic) oil pump is supplied after these filers and Hydraulic oil discharging
from the HP section of the either lube oil pump also passes through a duplex
filter before entering the VIGVs.
Dirty oil filter elements create differential pressure. As particles accumulate on
the filter elements, this pressure drop (a difference between the oil pressure
before and after the filter) increases. Each differential transmitter is monitored by
the UCP which sounds an alarm when the lube oil or hydraulic oil differential
pressure exceeds 2 Bard (29 psid). It is recommended to change the filter
elements before it reaches that level.
Flow Control Valve
The flow control Valve (90QGVC) is control by the Control with a 4 to 20 ma.
Signal to provide the correct oil flow to bearings.
Oil flow to the RB211 bearings is flow scheduled based on N1 speed. See
typical graph below.

The flow control valve differential pressure is monitored by the fuel control and
alarms and shutdown will occur should it fall outside established limits. Alarm
and shutdown are active with greater than 7 ma. Drive current.
Oil which passes through the Flow control valve next goes to the scheduling
valve where. The scheduling valve may be in on of three positions:
Bypass
All the Oil is directed back to the reservoir. This is the position of the valve
at all times when the Gas generator is not running and during the time
need to verify operation of the oil flow controls when the unit is starting.
Prewet
When oil flow control has been proven and the unit is in start sequence
below 2000 RPM N1.
Scheduled
During all normal running operation. Moved to Bypass on any stop, at the
end of a coolstop or on any shutdown.
After leaving the scheduling valve the oil is now distributed through orifices to the
Front, Center and Rear bearings of the Gas generator.

Center Bearing Differential Pressure
The differential pressure measured across the center bearing to the scavenging
oil connection for the center bearing serves as an indicator as the proper
operation of the Gas Generator and the oil system. Shutdowns and alarms are
established within the Fuel Control to verify operation within the design limits. A
typical graph of those valves is shown below.
Scavenging oil
The Gas Generator has three connections that are equipped metal particle
detectors.
These connections L2, L3 and L4 are then connected to separate scavenging
section on the lube oil pumps.
These pumps pickup the oil from the bearing lubrication and return it to the
reservoir.
