Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Aloe vera is a natural product that is now a day frequently used in the field of
cosmetology. The Aloe vera plant has been known and used for centuries for its health,
beauty, medicinal and skin care properties. The name Aloe vera derives from the Arabic
word “Alloeh” meaning “shining bitter substance,” while “vera” in Latin means “true.”
2000 years ago, the Greek scientists regarded Aloe vera as the universal panacea. The
Egyptians called Aloe “the plant of immortality.” Today, the Aloe vera plant has been
used for various purposes in dermatology. (Amar, S. et.al, 2008)
Hand sanitizers were invented by Lupe Hernandez, a registered in Bakersfield,
California, in 1966. While Hernandez was studying to become a nurse, she learned that
cleaning alcohol can be delivered via gel so that cleaning could occur without a soap
and water. (Brown, L. 2022)
The need to use a natural alternative for disinfecting dental impression
materials, which should be biocompatible and effective, led us to evaluate the efficacy of
Aloe vera as a disinfectant by immersion and spray method on alginate impression
material and its effect on the dimensional stability of the resultant gypsum cast. (Trivedi,
R. et. al, 2019)
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers have been proven effective in reducing the
spread of microbial infections. However, frequent use of alcohol-based formulations of
hand sanitizers can cause adverse skin effects, such as allergic and irritant contact
dermatitis. Thus, we evaluated the irritant potency of alcohol-based hand sanitizers
containing aloe vera and clove extract with four irritation studies and compared in vivo
and in vitro results. (Ahn, J.H. et. al, 2010)
The researchers chose this research because of the advantages it can be offer.
This study is also notable since, if you ever want to make your own aloe vera as a hand-
sanitizer, you can do so, by buying materials if needed. The research was conducted at
Christ the King College during the academic year 2022-2023.
Statement of the Problem
These are the following questions that are addressed in this study:
1. What is the purpose of aloe vera as a hand sanitizer?
2. What are the benefits of aloe vera as a hand sanitizer?
3. Is aloe vera hand sanitizer is more effective than rubbing alcohol?
Significance of the Study
The result of this study gives a reliable information about aloe vera hand sanitizer.
The aloe vera hand sanitizer is labelled to be one of the best sanitizers because it
moisturizes your skin and less likely to irritate your skin.
Scope and Limitation
This study focuses on the benefits of aloe vera as hand sanitizer. Research and
new studies will be used as reference in finding out what are the benefits of aloe vera as
hand sanitizer. This study focuses on the benefits of aloe vera as hand sanitizer and not
the benefits of aloe vera alone.
Definition of Terms
Cosmetology - The study and application of beauty treatments which include
hairstyling, skincare, cosmetics, manicures/pedicures, and lots more.

considered an invasive species in many world regions.
Dermatitis - A general term that describes a common skin irritation. Alginate- An
impression material that is commonly used in dentistry.
Panacae - A solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases. Biocompatible- Related to
the behavior of biomaterials in various contexts. The term refers to the ability of a
material to perform with an appropriate host response in a specific situation.
Immersion - The deep-level personal involvement of the researcher with the object of
study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Aloe vera is a common ingredient among skin care and beauty
products. Since it soothes skin and has a low risk of causing allergies, and
it is applicable to any skin type. It can also erase acne and gives healthy
skin, it also contains an enzyme, Bradykinase, it is a enzyme in the aloe
vera plant, it helps reduce inflammation when applied to skin, while other
helps breakdown fats and sugars.
