Mat No 1 7227 Din 42crmos4 Aisi 4140

This document summarizes the material properties of Mat.No. 1.7227, also known as DIN 42CrMoS4 and AISI 4140. It is a special structural steel used for automobile and mechanical engineering components. The steel has a carbon content of 0.41% and can be softened through annealing, normalized to increase strength, and hardened and tempered. In a quenched and tempered condition, the steel exhibits mechanical properties like tensile strength between 1100-1300 MPa depending on diameter. It also has good hardenability based on end quench test results.

Description
Special structural steel.

Applications
High and moderately stressed components for automobile industry and mechanical
engineering - shafts, connecting rods, crankshafts, screws, etc.

Physical properties (avarage values) at ambient temperature

Modulus of elasticity [103 x N/mm2]: 210
Density [g/cm3]: 7.80

Soft Annealing
Heat to 680-720oC, cool slowly in furnace. This will produce a maximum Brinell hardness of
241.

Normalizing
Temperature: 840-880oC.

Hardening
Harden from a temperature of 820-860oC followed by oil or water quenching.

Tempering
Tempering temperature: 540-680oC.
