Introductory Message
Welcome to Science Grade 9!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Capiz and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to
guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Science Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal
or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to
the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Science Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even if
you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and
engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read
and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Energy from Volcanoes

I. Learning Competency with Code

• Illustrate how energy from volcanoes maybe tapped for human use (S9ES –
IIIc-d-29)

II. Background Information for Learners

Earth is believed to be extremely hot from within. This heat from the Earth’s
interior is a source of energy called geothermal energy. The heat of the Earth warms
up water which is trapped in rock formation beneath its surface.

Geothermal energy is generated in two ways: geothermal power plants and

geothermal heat pumps. They differ in heat source to produce energy. In geothermal
power plants, the heat from deep inside the earth is used to produce steam to generate
electricity compared with geothermal heat pumps that use the heat coming from close
to the Earth’s surface to heat water or provide for buildings and industrial
manufacturers.

The Philippines is located along the Ring of Fire and it is called a home of many
volcanoes. The most famous among the volcanoes is the Mt. Mayon due to its almost
perfect cone. Another famous volcano in the country is Taal Volcano. It has an
elevated seismic activity which caused a massive, devastating eruption in January
2020. The recent eruption prompted authorities to evacuate residents from Volcano
Island, located within the danger zone to a safer place. Despite of the dangers that
can be caused by the volcanoes in the country, volcanoes are good sources of
geothermal energy for geothermal power plants.
.
This learning activity will help you illustrate how energy from volcanoes maybe
harnessed for human use.

IV Activity Proper

ACTIVITY 1: Geothermal Energy Concept Map

Objectives:

After performing this activity, you should be able to:

1. Analyze the flow of geothermal energy in power plant from the given
picture and;
2. Describe how thermal energy is being harnessed

Directions: Read and understand the text and picture below. Answer the questions
that follow.

HOW A GEOTHERMAL ENERGY BEING HARNESSED

1. Wells Are Drilled –

A production well is drilled into a known geothermal reservoir. Typically, an
injection well is also drilled to return used geothermal fluids to the geothermal
reservoir. Hot geothermal fluids flow through pipes to a power plant for use in
generating electricity.
2. Steam Turns the Turbine
Hot, pressurized geothermal fluid, or a secondary working fluid, is allowed to
expand rapidly and provide rotational or mechanical energy to turn the turbine
blades on a shaft.
3. The Turbine Drives the Electric Generator
Rotational energy from the turning turbine shaft is used directly to spin magnets
inside a large coil and create electrical current. The turbine and generator are
the primary pieces of equipment used to convert geothermal energy to electrical
energy.
4. Transmission - Power Lines Deliver Electricity
Electrical current from the generator is sent to a step-up transformer outside
the power plant. Voltage is increased in the transformer and electrical current
is transmitted over power lines to homes, buildings, and businesses.

2
Questions:

1. Describe how geothermal energy is being harnessed for human use.

2. Analyze the flow of geothermal energy in power plant from the given picture.
3. How can geothermal energy be a source of electricity?

ACTIVITY 2: How is Geothermal Energy Generated?

Objectives:

• Discuss how a geothermal power plant works.

• Suggest ways to conserve energy.

Directions: Read and understand the text and flow chart of how geothermal energy
is being harnessed below. Answer the questions that follow.

Geothermal power plants use steam to produce electricity. The steam comes
from reservoirs of hot water found a few miles or more below the earth's surface. The
steam rotates a turbine that activates a generator, which produces electricity.

Answer the following:

1. Fill out the empty boxes on the concept map of geothermal energy sequence.
2. Illustrate through a flow chart and discuss how energy from volcano is
transformed to generate electricity.

Activity 1
1. Geothermal energy is tapped from naturally occurring hydrothermal convection
systems to produce electricity for human use.

geothermal fluid, or a secondary working fluid, is allowed to expand rapidly and provide
rotational or mechanical energy to turn the turbine blades on a shaft. Rotational energy
from the turning turbine shaft is used directly to spin magnets inside a large coil and
