What is structure
A structure is a series of connected elements like a beam, column, slab,
cable, etc. that form together with a system that can resist a series of
external load effects applied to it, which includes its dead load, live
load, wind load, etc. and provide adequate rigidity.

Getting started
To work on staad pro v8i software you need to install the software and
double click on the staad pro icon, after that, you will see the below-
shown window.
In a project task, there are 6 options first one is “New project” to start a
new project we can use this option. The second option is the “open
project” to open the previous project that we have done. And the next
important option is “configuration” in this option we can configure all
the settings like unit and default data of the input and output data.
To start the new project click on “new project” option then we
will find the “new model” dialogue box in this select the “space”
option, provide “filename”, select a location where you want to save this
file, then select the “length unit” as meter and “force unit”
as kilonewton.

Then click on the Next button, after that we will find the new dialogue
box which is “where do you want to go” in this select a “add beam”
function. And click on finish.

Create geometry
Close the grid and in coordinate provide 0,0,0 in x,y,z columns to create
the first node to start creating geometry this is the first step to create
geometry or we can click on the grid at 0 coordinate to create the first
node. Then take a top view (view from +Y) from view cubes.

Take a node cursor select that first node (1) and copy it with “ctrl+C”
and past the node with “ctrl+V” new dialogue box will open in this go to
the “X” and provide a distance of second node (2) as 4m, again copy the
second node (2) and past it in “X” direction at a distance of 3.5 m to
create a third node (3) now we created three nodes of the first row.
Then select all the three nodes (1,2,3) of the first row and copy it and
paste it in “Z” direction at a distance of 3m to create node number 4,5,6.
Then select node number 4,5 and paste it in Z direction at distance 2.6m
to create node number 7,8 at last select and copy node number 5,6 and
paste it in Z direction at distance 3.6m to create node number 9,10. Then

take add beam command and create a beam in between all the nodes.
Now take a beam cursor and select all the beams, take translational
repeat command when you take this command again new dialogue box
will open in this select “Y” direction, number of steps will be 4 and
provide spacing 3.2 meters for each floor, check on the link steps option
and click on “OK”.

Then go to the front view from view cubes select all floors one by one
and take a command “fill floor grid with plates” to create plates (slab) on
the floor. All the geometry of the building is completed.
Define property
To define property go to the general option in the page control area, then
select “define” option from data area, a new dialogue box will open
choose rectangle option and provide beam property, column property
and for slab thickness go to the “thickness” option.
Assign all the properties one by one to all beams, columns, and slab. To
assign property of beam go to the front view and select all beams than
take assignment method as “assign to selected beams” then click on
assign and then yes. Repeat the same process to assign the property of
columns. To assign property of slab select that property and take
assignment method as “assign to view” and click on assign and
yes. Watch the video for the full process.

Apply loads
After assigning the support next step is to assign loads like dead load,
live load, seismic load, and wind force on the structure. In this book we
will apply only dead load and live load, to create all type of load go to
the load/definition option in page control area and then select load case
details option in data area and click on add button you will get new
dialogue box here select a loading type as dead for dead load provide a
title as dead load then click on add now case for a dead load is create
same as that create a case for live load and close the dialogue box.
Apply self-weight of beam, column, slab, and wall as dead load. To the
weight of beam, column and slab just click on dead load case which we
created then click on add, a new dialogue box will open in this select
“self-weight load”, select direction as “Y” and provide factor (-1) and
11

add this for the weight of wall go to member load and then uniform
force provide a weight of outer wall as (-12 kn/m), weight of inner wall
as (-6kn/m) and weight of parapet wall as (-2kn/m), for live load select
live load case click on add button and go to floor load and provide value
as (-3kn/m2 ). watch the video for calculation of load according to IS
CODE, we use IS 875 part 1 for dead load and IS 875 part 2 for live load
calculation.
Now assign all the loads to structure one by one take a front view from
view cube select all the beam only do not select beams of the top floor
then go to view option n menu bar and click on view selected object
only then go to the top view and select weight of outer wall which in (-
12kn/m) and select all the outer beams to take assignment method
“assign to selected beams” and click on assign and yes. After that select
weight on an inner wall which is (-6kn/m), select all inner beams, and
take assignment method “assign to selected beams” click on assign and
yes.
Then go to “display whole structure” to get back the whole structure and
select top floor beams and assign a weight of the parapet wall the same
as we applied wall weight.
Now we need to create load combinations like (DEAD LOAD+LIVE
LOAD) and 1.5(DEAD LOAD +LIVE LOAD) etc. for that click on load
case details and add new dialogue box will open go to the “define
combination” here provide name, default factor and bring the loads in a
selected column from available load case column and add this, you can
also use the option auto load combination for this option select
combination code as Indian and click on generate and then add
this. Watch the video

For concrete design, select design from page control area then select
concrete, in data area go to current code and take IS 456, click on
define parameter and provide FC (strength of concrete =
20000kn/m2), FY MAIN (yield strength of main reinforcement =
500000kn/m2), FYSEC ( yield strength of secondary reinforcement=
500000kn/m2), minimum bar size and maximum bar size, etc. and
assign all the parameter to the structure.

After that, you will get again the “staad analysis and design”
window in this select “view output file” option and click on done. Staad
output file will open in this file select “results” then “concrete design”
option you will gate concrete design results for all beams and columns
and take-off of the material.
