Lesson Main Idea, Key
1 Sentences and
Supporting Details
Every story, poem, or paragraph has a main idea. The main idea
tells what the story, poem or paragraph is about. The key sentences
give key to the main idea. The supporting details tell more about the
main idea.
What I Know
Directions: Identify the main idea of each paragraph. Choose the
letter of the correct answer.
1. Filipinos are helpful. They are ready to help one another especially
in times of need. During natural calamities like typhoons, fires and
earthquakes, they are always ready to give help to the victims of these
calamities. In their barangay, they help one another in activities such
as planting and harvesting farm crops or rebuilding a house.
A. Filipinos are helpful.

2. Filipinos show respect to their elders. The younger person takes the
elder’s hand and brings it to his/her forehead to show respect. They
take good care of their grandparents and other members of the family
when they grow old. They hold family reunions on special days.

flowers there.

During their time, Rizal and Bonifacio did good things for the
Filipinos and for our country. They are heroes.
Our heroes were little children like you, once upon a time. When
Andres was a little boy, his parents died so he took care of his brother
and sisters.
Andres worked very hard to earn a living. He made paper fans
and carved toys from wood. He sold them along the streets. He also
ran errands for others.
As a little boy, Jose Rizal used his time wisely. He read a lot of
books. He drew and painted pictures. He molded figures out of clay.
He craved things from wood He also wrote poems, stories and

What is It
Think!
Every story, poem or paragraph has a main idea.
The main idea tells what the story, poem or paragraph is about.
The key sentence tells what the paragraph is all about. It may
be the first, last or middle sentence in the paragraph. All sentences in
the paragraph are related to the key sentence.
The supporting details tell more about the main idea. They
give important details and describe the main idea for better
understanding.
The poem you have read talks about the insect’s body parts. So
the main idea is body parts of insects. The supporting details are the
head, thorax and abdomen.
Example:
The earth is constantly in motion. It always rotates like a top. It
takes the earth twenty-four hours to make one rotation. As the earth
rotates, it also revolves around the sun. It takes 365 days for the earth
to revolve around the sun.
Main Idea: The movement of the earth.
Key sentence: The earth is constantly in motion.
Supporting Details:
It takes the earth twenty-four hours to make one rotation.
It takes 365 days for the earth to revolve around the sun.

colorful religious celebration in Cebu.
