RESEARCH METHODOLOGY & DATA ANALYSIS
SEMESTER MAC – AUG 2021
SPSS ANALYSIS (30 PERCENT)
Tutorial aims:
1) To introduce SPSS software to the AM225 & AM226 students
2) To teach basic and key statistical techniques for analysis of data in ADS651
Tutorial objectives:
The students should be able to:
1) Create an SPSS data file.
2) Perform basic functions of recoding and computing in SPSS.
3) Carry out test of normality, homogeneity of variance, and linearity.
4) Run bivariate correlations and interpret results.
5) Run all forms of T-tests and interpret results.
6) Run One-Way ANOVA with multiple comparisons and interpret result.
.
Assessment strategy:
1) Assessment is based on exercises carried out by pairs of students.
2) Deadlines and discipline are important.
3) Interpretation of the statistics is key, not merely generating SPSS the output.
4) Students can resubmit the assignment within an assigned date for review and upgrading
of marks by the tutors if they redo their corrected assignment.
Dissemination of the coursework marks:
The tutors shall inform the students of the marks obtained for each assignment and finally, the
total coursework marks before the end of the semester.

ADS651SPSS EXERCISE
INTRODUCTION
This assignment aims to equip students with report writing skills. Students are required to write a
mini research report based on the data obtained from the survey you conducted and discussed
in class entitled “FACTORS THAT LEAD TO GADGET DEPENDENCY AMONG MALAYSIAN
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS.”
The objective of the study is to identify factors that influence the level of gadget dependency
among Malaysian undergraduate students.
GENERAL SUBMISSION REQUIREMENT
1. Prepare a short report maximum 30 pages with1.5 space.
2. The names, student ID, and the group number must be written clearly on all assignment.
3. Check your language to make sure it is error free.
Write your report neatly and easy to read. Use tables/charts/figures in your analysis to make it
more attractive and interesting to read. Ensure that you format the report well and eliminate
spelling and grammatical errors.

● nominal variable:
● ordinal variable:
● interval variable:
● ratio variable:
2. Describe the background and demography of the respondents based on the questions/
items below:

Data Analysis
(Reliability Test & Normality Test)
QUESTION
1. Are there any incorrect data entry?
2. Are the variables reliable?
3. Are the variables normally distributed?
ANALYSIS TO BE PERFORMED
1. Carry out data screening for all the variables.
2. Recode all negatively worded items.
3. Conduct reliability test.
4. Compute the variables (Time Spent on Gadget, Possession of The Gadget, Functions of
the Gadget, and Gadget Dependency).
5. Screen for normality.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENT
1. The report must be submitted through UFUTURE idiscuss folder according to your
class.
2. The names, student ID, and the group number must be written clearly on all assignments.

SPSS EXERCISE 3
Correlation Analysis
Explain whether time spent on gadget, possession of the gadget, and functions of the gadget
correlate with their total overall level of gadget dependency. For each state the null and alternative
hypotheses. What is your decision/finding?
QUESTION
1. Is there a significant and strong correlation between the total overall level of gadget
dependency with:
i. Time Spent on Gadget,
ii. Possession of the Gadget,
iii. Functions of the Gadget
ANALYSIS TO BE PERFORMED
1. Carry out preliminary univariate analysis to examine the assumptions for all the variables.
The assumptions are as follows: level of measurement, related pairs, absence of outliers,
and linearity.
-Level of measurement refers to each variable. For a Pearson correlation, each variable
should be continuous (interval/ratio/scale).
-Related pairs refers to the pairs of variables. Each participant or observation should have
a pair of values. So if the correlation was between weight and height, then each
observation used should have both a weight and a height value (linearity).
-Absence of outliers refers to not having outliers in either variable. Observed the normality
results (skewness & kurtosis) and box plots.
-Linearity refers to the shape of the values formed by the scatterplot. For linearity, a
“straight line” relationship between the variable should be formed. If a line were to be
drawn between all the dots going from left to right, the line should be straight and not
curved.
