Speed
PRETEST
Choose the letter of the correct answer.

1. Which of the following demonstrates motion?

A. boy jogging in place
B. dog barking at the garage
C. girl running towards her father
D. boy running on a treadmill device

2. What does a traffic sign of 60 km/h on a road mean? A. A car may travel more
than 60 km/h.
B. A car is not allowed to have a speed of 60 km/h. C.
The minimum speed of a car may travel is 60 km/h.
D. The maximum speed of a car may travel is 60 km/h.

3. Which does not demonstrate motion?

A. pencil on the table
B. ball rolling on the floor
C. mother walking on the street
D. ballerina dancing on the stage

4. It shows how fast the motion of an object?

A. Distance
B. Motion
C. Speed
D. Time

5. What is the formula to be use if you want to get the speed of a moving object?
A. Speed X Time
B. Distance / Time
C. Distance / Speed
D. Time X Distance

RECAP
After learning what is the definition and how to compute for distance and time,
we will now proceed about speed and how to compute for it. But before that, let us
have some review.

Identify what is asked.

_________________1. It means a change in position of an object from the place it

started.
_________________2. It is measured in terms of seconds, minutes, hours, days, or
years.
_________________3. It is the separation between positions of time and space.
_________________4. Distance / Speed
_________________5. Speed X Time

I think with the result of our review, we can now proceed with the continuation
of our lesson and that is all about speed.

LESSON
Speed
The distance covered by a moving object is affected by its speed, or the
measure of how fast it moves. The faster it moves, the shorter time it takes for it to
cover a certain distance. Inversely, the slower it moves, the longer it takes for it to
cover the same distance. Thus, in a given time, the faster an object moves, the greater
the distance that it covers; and the slower it moves, the less the distance that it
covers.
Speed shows how fast the motion of an object. It shows the relationship between
distance reached by a moving object and the period of time spent.
Speed = Distance
Time

Formula for SPEED Fast motion of a racing car

Speed can be calculated by dividing the distance covered by an object in motion by

the time spent to cover the distance.
Example: You are late for school, so you rode your bike from your home to your
school with a distance of 10 kilometers and reach after 2 hours, what was your speed?

Speed = Distance (10 kilometers)

Time (2 hours)
= 5 kilometers per hour or 5 km/h

Example: A boy ran the 100 meter dash for only 20 second, what is his speed?

Speed = Distance (100 meters)

Time (20 seconds)
= 5 meters per second or 5 m/s
Note: We have to remember that in 1 kilometer there is 1000 meters and in
1 hour there is 60 minutes or 3,600 seconds and in 1 minute there are
60 seconds

We use km/h or m/s as a unit of measure to get for the speed of a moving
object.

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1 Box it!

Directions: Identify what is being asked by choosing the right words in the box.

1. The faster it moves, the __________________ it takes for it to cover a

certain distance.
2. The _____________ it moves, the _____________ it takes for it to cover the
same distance.
3. The ____________ an object moves, the ______________ the distance that
it covers.

faster longer slower greater shorter time

Activity 2 Speed it Up!

Directions: Solve the following problems.

1. Baguio City is 250 kilometers from Manila. What is your speed if you reach
the city after 5 hours of travelling?
2. The man runs a distance of 50 kilometers and had a time of 2 hours when it
reached its destination. How fast did the man travel?
3. A leaf falls on top of a 200 meter tree and reached the ground after 2 minutes.
How fast will it reach the ground?

Activity 3: Let’s Drive!

Thanos starts to travel by his car from Pasig City at 1:00 a.m. and reached
Pangasinan at 6:00 a.m. In order to reach the province of Pangasinan, you travelled
a distance of 200 kilometers. How fast did Thanos reached his destination?
WRAP-UP

We go to school from Monday to Friday, after class we go home. It is a routine

that we do all the time. But do you ever tried to measure how fast you reach your
school when you commute in a tricycle? Let’s Try It!!!

You left your home early in the morning, you rode a tricycle so that you can
come early in school. The distance of your school to your home is 12 kilometers and
you reach it at after 2 hours. How fast did you reach your school?

VALUING
After this pandemic, where do you want to go for a vacation? Of coarse, your
family will travel far distances to reach your destination. But do we have to be careful
when we travel using our cars or vans?
Do we have to travel that fast to reach our destination?
Answer the following questions.

1. What is the importance of speed limits?

________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
2. Where can you often find speed limit signs?
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
3. Why do you think these places have enforced speed limits?
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
