Project Proposal

This document outlines a student project to design an automatic water/milk/juice filling system using an Arduino microcontroller. A group of 3 students will work on the project under an advisor. The system will use a conveyor belt to transport bottles past an infrared sensor and filling station. An ultrasonic sensor will monitor liquid level in each bottle and the Arduino will control a pump to fill bottles to the preset level before the conveyor moves the bottle away. The project aims to automate bottle filling for small industries at low cost compared to existing commercial systems.

Abstract
The field of automation has a notable impact in a wide range of industries beyond
manufacturing. Automation plays an increasingly important role in the world economy.
Filling is a task carried out by a machine that packages liquid products such as cold
drinks or water. In past, humans were the main method for controlling a system. More
recently, electricity has been used for control and electrical control is based on
microcontrollers for various purposes like medicines, pharmaceutical plants, chemical
plants etc. The microcontrollers control the complete working of the system. In small
industries bottle filling operation is done manually. The manual filling process has many
shortcomings like spilling of water while filling it in bottle, equal quantity of water may
not be filled, delay due to natural activities of human etc. This problem faced by small
industries compels to design this system. This proposed system is meant for small
industries. It aims to eliminate problem faced by small scale bottle filling system. With
this system which operates automatically, every process can be smooth and the process of
refilling can reduce worker cost and operation cost. This study mainly includes design,
fabrication and control system for automated bottle filling system. The main part is
control system which is called Arduino microcontroller to control various components in
system

Background of the Study

Nowadays, world is moving towards automation. The industry has now shifted its
purpose of automaton to broader level because automation will improve quality and
quantity of their product to meet customer demand with a planned time. Generally the use
of automatic filling stations using a belt conveyor system is most economical, fast and
commonly used system used in small firms. This project works as a prototype for basic
concept of automatic filling stations in beverages, and dairy process industries .The
automation of bottle filling involves use of cylinder, pneumatic system and PLC to
operate but it is costly. Even though all of this available on market, but there are small
industries still using manual method to filling up the bottle. The constraint for them not to
use this convenient technology is due to the cost of the machine. This study focus on
create a system to measure liquid volume filled up inside the bottle using Arduino and
build a prototype of low-cost filling machine. Arduino microcontroller is cheap and very
reliable to do the task.

Our project works on automatically filling bottles using Arduino controller. It is less
costly, cheap and widely used technology. For transportation of bottles in the project we
have used conveyor belt which rotates using DC motor. The motor will keep driving the
conveyor until an infrared (IR) sensor detects the presence of a bottle right below the
filling station. The IR sensor sends the signal to the controller which in return sends a
signal to stop the motor, additionally we used DC pump which to fill the bottle. The
liquid level in the bottle is continuously monitored using an ultrasonic sensor. A preset
required level of liquid is already entered in the controller. The controller compares the
instantaneous level to the preset required level. As soon as the desired level is reached,
the pump device turns off the filling. When filling stops, the conveyor starts moving so
that next bottle can be filled

General Objectives
The general objective of the project is to design and develop an Arduino Uno based
automatic bottle filling system that sense the presence of bottle and fills it accordingly up
to a fixed level. In this project we developed proximity sensor using infrared sensor that
detects the presence of bottle

Specific Objectives
The specific objective of this project is to create an automated filling station for bottles,
using detection technique for bottles and controlled level filling which includes

 To design and implement automated water filling machine

 To perform a filling water process in to the bottle
 To study the pogromming code to program the controller base on Adriano Uno
 To use Adriano device for sending and receiving commands
 To use an infrared sensor to detect a position of bottles
 To build prototype which are low cost, user friendly and with transparent
structure

Scope of the Project

Under this study, we analyses the plan and simulate automatic filling water system with
Arduino Uno based controller using proteuse software starting from the design of each
component up to the complete design, simulation and demonstrate it with practical
situation.

Contributions of the Study

The main contributions of this project are:

 This project is more useful for those small beverage enterprises which do
their activities manually
 This study contributes to the filling of gaps by providing a detail
analysis of a small beverage companies to be used a machine which is far
from any human interference during process
