Which Approach
I’d like to say a few words about Carol’s lesson. She is teaching a basic level course. I absolutely
like how she acts with students. She is really polite and patient and uses warm language. Carol is
well-organized and clearly knows what to do. She followed her lesson plan in general, but there
was no listening. She preferred a traditional structure-teach, model and question. Carol started a
lesson on time and checked out all students joined it. She worked in a proper pace and everyone
in class was involved and listened very carefully. In the beginning of the lesson, they discussed a
quiz that was assigned as homework. They revised vocabulary on a topic “Apartments” that they
started on the previous lesson and had board work. After that, Carol modelled all the next
activities before students’ practice. They went step by step and in the end of the lesson they
could make up a dialogue in pairs using some pictures of apartments and a handout. Students
discussed what they like or dislike there.
As I see, a teacher used the Communicative approach(1980). She used authentic materials,
handouts that incorporate their topic “Apartments”. There are some useful vocabulary and
agreeing/disagreeing statements in different dialogues according to their topic. The teacher kept
things conversational and motivate her students to talk like in real life situations.
Moreover, the teacher applies some principles of the Comprehension approach (1980). Students’
affective filter is low, during the lesson the teacher speaks only the target language, make
meanings clear and explain everything, she asks “Ok?” “Right?” “Do you understand the
vocabulary?”. Usage of visual aids like whiteboard with different examples, helped students to
understand better the new information, she highlighted some phrases there. She used simple
questions and answers to elicit agreeing and disagreeing phrases. There were the variety of
activities to keep student’s attention.
Apart from that, I find some techniques from the Affective Humanistic approach (1970) like
positive atmosphere in the classroom, the teacher smiled at students, encouraged them, students
are involved in the process of learning. They tried to participate and communicate without any
fear. They understood what they were supposed to do and Carol was focused on them and gave
positive feedback.
If to speak about me, I’d like to use this activity with handouts. Students use pictures and made
up a dialogue together. I believe it’s the best way to motivate students to talk.
