1732 1989 Reff2019

This document is an Indian Standard that specifies dimensions, sectional areas, and mass of hot-rolled round and square steel bars for structural and general engineering purposes. It provides these specifications for bars with diameters or side widths ranging from 5 mm to 200 mm. The standard references other Indian Standards for steel quality and tolerances. Tables 1 and 2 list the dimensions, sectional areas, and mass per meter for both round and square bars.

Structural Sections Sectional Committee, CEDC 8

FOREWORD
This Indian Standard ( Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 28 June
1989, after the draft finalised by the Structural Sections Sectional Committee had been approved by
the Civil Engineering Division Council.
This standard was first published in 1961. In its first revision in 1971 the dimension ~, sectional a rea
and mass of round and square bars were based on ISO/ R 1035/1-1969 and ISO/ R 1035/11-1969,
respectively. With the publication of these recommendations into ISO Standards, another revision
ofIS : I 732 was felt necessary. In this revision, therefore, the dimensions, sectional area and mass
of round and square steel bars have been aligned with the 'Preferred Sizes' of ISO 1035/1-1980 'Hot
rolled steel liars - Part I Dimensions of r:qund bars' and ISO 1035/2-1980 'Hot rolled steel bars' -
Part 2 Dimensions of square bars' issued ' by the International Organisation for Standardization.
Dimensions 5 mm and 6 mm both for the round and square bars have been retained from the earlier
version of the standard, as these are produced and used widely in the country.
Values of mass and sectional area of bars have been given in three significant figures.

products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced
to comply with the requirements of that standard under a weJJ defined system of inspection,
testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the
_producer. Standard marked products are also continuously checked by BIS for conformity ,,
to that standard as a further safeguard. Detail1 of conditions under which a licence for the
use of the Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained
