RESEARCH TITLE : Perception of 11 ABM Students to Mental
Health Problems that Affect their Academic Performance in
Consolacion National High School–Day Class(SHS)
Statement of the Problem:
The main purpose of this survey study is to gather information about the perceptions of 11
ABM students of Consolacion National High School–Day Class(SHS) about mental health
problems that affect their academic performance. This research will show how mental health
problems affect their studies, what are the different challenges they face, and what are the
effective strategies for overcoming mental health problem.
The study investigate the following questions:
1. What are the factors/situations that made you aware you have a mental health problem?
2. In what way mental health problems affect the academic performance of a student?
3. What are the different challenges they face while dealing with mental health problem?
4. What are strategies/ways students do, to overcome mental health problems?
Rationale
The mental health of a student has an impact on their academic success. Students who are in
good mental health are ready to learn. They have stronger self-esteem and are more
motivated to achieve academic goals. A student who is dealing with their mental health or has
been diagnosed with a mental health issue may struggle to pay attention, remember, and solve
problems. They may also struggle to satisfy classroom standards. School personnel chastise
kids who are rowdy, uninterested, or belligerent. Suspensions and expulsions are
exclusionary sanctions that have a negative influence on academic progress. Students who are
not allowed to attend school cannot learn or participate. Attendance and even graduation rates
are affected by a student's mental health. Connecting pupils to mental health services assists
them in remaining in school.
It’s long been known that mental health can affect a student’s academic performance and
ability to reach graduation, whether in high school or college, student mental health has
suffered as young people had to make a radical shift away from the classroom and into
remote learning. When students experience depression or anxiety, it affects their mood,
energy level, and ability to concentrate. This can lead to struggles with their academics and
create challenges for educators in their efforts to accommodate them.
Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being are all parts of our mental health. It
influences our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Additionally, it influences how we respond
to stress, interact with others, and make decisions. Every period of life, from childhood and
adolescence to maturity, is vital for mental health. If you have mental health issues, they may
have an impact on your thinking, mood, and behavior over the course of your life. Numerous
factors, including biological ones like genes or brain chemistry, as well as environmental
ones like trauma or abuse, have a role in mental health issues, a history of mental health
issues in the family.
Begun and held in Metro Manila, on Monday, the twenty-fourth day of July, two
thousand seventeen. REPUBLICACT No. 11036 This Act shall be called "The Mental Health
Act" in order to establish a national mental health policy aimed at enhancing the delivery of
integrated care services, promotion and protection of human rights for people engaged in
psychiatric or psychostimic service as well as appropriation of financial resources dedicated
to that purpose.
Declaration of Policy. In addition, the State shall ensure that all Filipino citizens have an
equal right to psychological assistance and fundamental rights of those who need it.
Government should be able to provide supports for students from a poor background like
grants, scholarships, etc. This will assist students in this category to remain focus. Teachers
should be student focus rather than being content minded. Parents should try to live in
harmony at least for this sake of their child. This will help them to be psychologically stable.
Qualified teachers should be employed by schools for quality teaching. Conducive
environment for learning should be provided by schools. Students should be ready to learn,
attend class regularly, and be inquisitive in class. Group reading among students should be
encouraged.
Academic success and mental health have a well-established negative correlation,
according to scientific literature. However, the mechanisms underlying how and when this
connection arises are not entirely known, and longitudinal, population-based research on
early infants are scarce. In order to find relationships during childhood, early intervention is
crucial. The current study's goal was to look into how the relationship between mental health
and academic performance changed as children and adolescents went through various
developmental stages. This study is to evaluate how well Grade 11 students of Consolacion
National High School are aware.
Theoretical Background
This study is anchored on the coping theory developed by Lazarus and
Folkman (1984). It explained how stress is a result of a person's interaction with their
environment, and how individuals respond to stress through coping strategies.
This theory is relevant to the research topic of mental health problems and academic
performance of ABM students. Students may experience stress from academic demands,
pressure to perform well, personal issues, family problems, and social pressures. If stressors
are not managed properly, they can lead to mental health problems such as anxiety and
depression, which can further impact academic performance. Therefore, the researcher
identify specific stressors and coping mechanisms. They can then develop interventions such
as stress management techniques, counseling, and academic support programs to improve the
mental health and academic performance of students. Through this theory, the
researchers will be able to identify the students' coping strategies related to the
coping theory by Lazarus and Folkman.
Significance of the study
This study aimed to provide valuable information on how mental health problems can affect
students academic performance and its relevance in the field of education.
For the students, the perception of mental health may help them to understand how mental
health affect their academic performance. It could be an aid in making them learn effective
strategies or ways on how to cope with it. It may improve the academic performance of
students and deepen their understanding how healthy mental health is effective in terms of
increasing learning, creativity, and productivity.
For the teachers, the result of this study may help them to use technique and different
approaches that they may use as a teaching strategy. By this, they may be able to meet the
needs of learners who are currently in the battle of mental health problem.
For the school administrators, this study may provide them with insights on the
development of academic performance regarding the importance of understanding students
mental health in which they may be able to construct ideas for training and seminar that will
help their teachers to learn strategies in teaching students who is battling mental health
problems.
For parents, this study may help them to know their child mental health, that will help them
be able to to see how, why, and what was the cause and the best way to solve it.
For future researchers, the result of this research may be use as a guide for the researchers
who have the same topic and can be used as related literature.
