Activity 2

The document discusses a student's thoughts on IBM Watson's performance on Jeopardy!. The student was surprised that a machine could win against human contestants. The student notes that sometimes Watson's answers were unrelated to the questions, possibly due to limitations in processing language like humans. When information is passed to Watson as text, there is a risk of confusion from errors like typos or lack of language specification. The student suggests healthcare and financial industries could benefit from Watson's question answering and analytical capabilities, such as aiding cancer research and providing financial guidance.

CS158-2 Activity #1

Alipalo, Fritz S.

1. What are your thoughts about areas that the machine is winning against the previous
best winners of Jeopardy?

When I was watching the show, I did not actually think that the machine would actually
win, more or less compete against the contestants. It was surprising for me, although
looking back I should have known it was obvious that a machine would win. Nevertheless, I
was still shocked by its capability to answer every question in multitude of difficulties.

2. Some answers given by IBM Watson are not totally related to the questions. May you
cite one example and share your idea why it can happen?

An example of Watson’s answer that was unrelated was during the question on the
character dialog where he answered Robin Hood and was incorrect. I think this is because as
a machine, it answers based on the probabilities and not like how humans know the answer
and if they don’t they choose the most probable one. So when the in the words Characters
and Robin appear in the question and was received by Watson, it thought it was a cartoon
character that called Robin Hood.

3. The questions are being passed to IBM watson via text file and being processed by
the machine. What are the possible confusions that a machine can interpret when
information is in the form of text?

When the information is passed through text files, confusions can be made due to errors.
This can be due to errors in spelling such as typos and wrong capitalizations of words. Since
Watson is not a human but a machine, it will process the information fed to it as is, unlike
humans who can ask questions about spelling mistakes and like. Other factors can also be
mistranslations. If a language is not specified in the information given, then Watson might
translate it into a different language.

4. Given the capabilities shown by IBM Watson in this game, what are the possible areas
or industries thay may benefit from this machine and why? Submit your answers via word
document.

I think one of the industries that could benefit the most from such innovation is the
healthcare industry. For example, Watson has taken residence at three of the top cancers
hospitals in the United States where it helps with cancer research and patient care. In terms
of cancer research, Watson is speeding up DNA analysis in cancer patients to help make
their treatment more effective. It can also help the physicians with their diagnoses through
X-Rays and MRIs.

Another industry is the financial industry. Since Watson is programmed for question and
answer as well as analyzation, Watson can be useful in giving financial guidance and
management.
