ment, as follows:

FIOCARe
(2) Specity for hardened steel parts only.
(2) See table below for maximm limits.

surtaces (those surfaces whieh can be touched by ® ephere 0.75 inch in diameter), af follow;

‘screw threads (also measured on aignificant surfaces).
Salt spray resistance - Finish shall show no white corresion products when subjected to the salt
spray test for 100 hours.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Preparation - The material to be plated shall be substantially free from flaws or other defects
that will be detrimental to the appearance or the protective value of the coating. It shall be
subjected to such cleaning procedures as are necessary to yield deposits with the desired ap-
Pearance ané quality. O11, grease, etc, shall be renoved by alkaline cleaners, enuleions, oF
other suitable cleaners. Scale shall be renoved mechanically rather than by pickling fron
hardened steel parts which are to be plated and treated to trinimire danger from hydrogen em.
brittlenent. Such parts shall not be flexed prior to baking.
Fisting - The finished plating shall have a untform appearance, shall be adherent and free fron
blisters, and substantially free fron other defects that may affect the appearance or protective
value of the coating.
Enbrittlenent treatment - Where called for by the designation, material shall be given a baking
‘treatment to minimize danger from hydrogen enbrittienent, This embrittlesent treatment shall
be given prior to the chromate treatnent and preferably within one hour after plating. Baking
fat 400 F (204 c) for to to three hours hes been found effective for plating thicknesses of
9.0001 to 0.0005 inch and three to five hours for plating thicknesses of 0.0003 to 0.0005 inch,
but other schedules might be required.
Ghronate treatment - shall be a sulfuric acid - sodium dichromate treatnent to retard the forma-
‘thon of white corrosion products and to give the material a golden brown iridescent appearance.
REVEREE METHODS:
‘Balt spray tes AST B17
‘Thickness of electroplate ---—--. = ASTM AZ19
Hydrogen enbrittlenent ~ Parte treated to minimize danger from hydrogen eabrittlement shall be
clamped, extended, or otherwise flexed to approximate the stress induced in the intended appli-
cation and held in such position for 16 hours. After such tests no parts shall show any signa
of failure. Where the application is not obvious, the test shall be by agreement of manufact-
w urer and purchaser.
PACKING AND MARKING:
‘All material shall be shipped in suitable containers to give adequate protection during transit.
‘All containers shall be legibly marked with the purchase order number, manufacturer's nane, and
the GE designation of material or part.

Thio finish is similar to bright cadmium plate, GE Finish F70C1, except that 1t 1s given a
sulfuric scid - sodiun dichromate treatment comonly mown in the trade as CROWK# conversion coating.
‘This chemical treatment increases the corrosion resistance, especially in contact with condensed or
stegnant moisture, The treatment also imparts a golden brown iridescent appearance.
For general applications requiring an untreated cadmium electroplate, use GE Finish F70C1.
Tne designations FocéA2, BZ, D2 and E2 are provided for use on plated springs and other
hardened steel parts, particularly where the carbon convent and hardness ere in escent of O°SOg
and 45 Rockweld respectively. A baking trentnent 1s required tmodintely after plating prorerebly
within one hour and before the chromate treatment. Baking at 400 P (204 ¢) for two to shoes noes

Freedom fron exbrittiment can be detemined only by teat. The specification requiser helaing for

Consideration should be given to the substitution of cadmium mechanical plating, GE Finish
FISC2 for applications where freedon from hydrogen eabrittienent 12 critiesl end a diller finish
can be tolerated. Use of mechanical plating also will greatly reduce the pollution problem. There
‘are no Cyanides oF other highly toxic chemicals in the mechanical plating process. Mechanical plat.
ing produces @ waste which contains coating metals, ‘This plating effluent will be weakly acidic and
can be handled by line-neutralization and settling. This treatment 1s less costly than that rec
quired to treat cyanide and other wastes from electroplating. ©
Plating of acith screw thread:
Yor parte with external screw threads, F70CéA should be specified. A thickness of 0.0002 to
0.0005 inch is the maximum thickness that is practical on screw threads, particularly in the more
popular sizes. ‘This thickness is recomended for bolts and acrews and satisfies Goverment re-
‘quirenents.
tn the case of parts with internal threads, thickness of plating on the serew thread is not
specified or required even in Government epecification.
Plating of 0.0002 to 0.0004 inch 1s recomended for nuts and plain washers.

PROCESS:
‘This section covers the procedure for applying a sulfuric acid - sodium dichromate treatuent,
‘commonly known @& GRONAK conversion coating, to bright cadmium electroplate, to produce GE Fintsh
F70c4.
Materials and Equipment:
‘Treating tank - stainie
Cleaning tank - Mild steel
Caustic soda (OE Material D&B4A)
Water
‘Synthetic (5)
(5) Alkyl aryi sodium sulfonate type (GE Material DSY15) or equivalent.
resting:
‘Sodium aichronate
Concentrated eulfuric acid (GE Material Déazc)
Water =
PH-0.8-1.5 (controlled by addition of concentrated sulfuric acid).
Sarety Precautions:
‘The cleaning solution 1s toxic. Acid resisting rubber gloves, rubber aprons and tight fitting
goggles or face shield must be worn, If the cleaning or treating solution 3# spilled on the
‘body, wash immediately with water. If the cleaning or treating solution gets into the eyes,
‘4 small streem of running water should be directed gently under the eyelids and continued for
several minutes before going to the dispensary, .
‘An exhaust ventilation system using GE Material B14) (MONEL? nickel-copper alloy), acid reste.
‘ting coated wood or GE Material BAZSB1 (galvanized iron) ducte with scrubbed air te re-
comended.
Plated Parte:
Before this process can be applied, parts must have been electroplated according to process
‘shown in F70CL; and when required, shall have been subjected to the baking treatnent to min-
Amize danger from hydrogen enbrittlenent.

Procedure:
Hote: For best results, cadmium electroplated parts must not be treated in a bath which has
been used for treating zine electroplated parts.
Sontinuous operation: (vhen electroplating and treating 1s continuous)
‘Rinse in cold running water.
Clean parts by immersing in cleaning bath at a temperature of 170-190 F.
Rinse in running cold water.
Immerse parts in treating bath (without agitation) for 5-50 seconds at a bath tenperature
range of 60-60 P. Dip time determines the film thickness end the finel color series rom

Note: Do not agitate work or solution or allow dip time to exceed 30 seconds.
Ringe thoroughly in running cold water for a time not to exceed S minutes.
Dry by filtered airbiast. Do not use warm or hot water or allow naturel air drying.
Rack or store parts at temperature of 60-80 F for 24 hours to obtain maximum gurfece hardness
Interrupted operation: (Wnen electroplating and treating are not continuous)
Reaove oii and dirt by vapor degreasing.
Rinse theroughly in runing cold water.
