Summary for Libra II firmware Version 2.1.20

Firmware version 2.1.20 supports the new Libra Carina 110 and Cygnus 210 models. These
models have version 2.1.20 installed at the factory. To permit the new Carina 110 or Cygnus
210 models to operate in the same network as a Carina 105, the firmware on existing Carina
105 models must be upgraded to version 2.1.20. Upgrading Cygnus 205 models with firmware
version 2.1.20 is not necessary. Upgrading Carina 105 models with firmware version 2.1.20 is
only required if you are introducing Carina 110 or Cygnus 210 into an existing Libra network.

On a network consisting of only the older Carina 105 and Cygnus 205 models:
● Upgrading to firmware version to 2.1.20 is not required.

On a network where any new model (Carina 110 or Cygnus 210) is present:
● All older Carina model 105 units on the network must be upgraded to firmware version
2.1.20. Cygnus 205 models do not require upgrade to version 2.1.20, if they are already
running at least version 2.1.18.

Note that the minimum firmware baseline for Carina 105 and Cygnus 205 model is 2.1.18. Any
Carina 105 or Cygnus 205 model running firmware 2.1.17 or earlier must be upgraded to
version 2.1.18 or 2.1.20.

System Requirements
Libra firmware version 2.1.20 can be installed on Carina hub and Cygnus remote units that are
currently running any version 2.1.13 or later firmware. To upgrade a unit that is running a
firmware version older than 2.1.13, please contact Nanometrics. Firmware version 2.1.20 is
compatible with all Libra II hardware models.

New Features and Improvements

New Hardware Support
Firmware version 2.1.20 adds support for the new Libra Carina 110 and Cygnus 210 models.
Otherwise this version provides the same features and performance capabilities as version
2.1.18.

WARNING: Firmware versions 2.2.x, 2.3.x, and 2.4.x are limited release or Beta
release versions of firmware that is currently compatible only with the older Carina
105 and Cygnus 205 models. These versions must not be installed on the new
Carina 110 and Cygnus 210 hardware.

New Carina 110 and Cygnus 210 models

The Carina 110 hub and Cygnus 210 remote are new models introduced in March 2018. These
models supersede the previous Carina 105 and Cygnus 205 models. Carina 110 and Cygnus
210 are compatible with the Carina 105 and Cygnus 205; in fact all of the 105/110/205/210
models can interoperate in the same Libra network.

The new Cygnus 210 model is designed for use with Nanometrics’ modern Ethernet-connected
digitizers, including the Centaur digital recorder, TitanSMA accelerograph and Meridian digital
seismometers, and removes support for the discontinued Trident 305 digitizer. Additionally, the
Cygnus 210 model does not have an NMX bus connector, as the NMX bus connection was only
used by the discontinued Trident 305. For more information on the Carina 110 and Cygnus 210
models contact your Nanometrics sales representative or [email protected].

Please note that the Link Local IP addresses for the new Carina and Cygnus hardware
models are different from the previous models. See the table below to determine which Link
Local addresse to use for accessing Libra units with a direct Ethernet connection.

Limitations and Workarounds

Statistics for good/bad bursts may be incorrect when no data is streamed
A Cygnus 205 or Cygnus 210 that is not streaming any data may report incorrect SOH statistics
for bursts and packets on the user interface.

Workaround: Enable data streaming to correct the problem. Use the Cygnus
configuration settings to enable SOH data streaming from the Cygnus itself, or configure
a digitizer (For example—Trident 305, Taurus, Centaur, or TitanSMA) on that Cygnus to
stream data to the central site. Once data is streaming from the Cygnus, the SOH
statistics for good and bad bursts will be correct.

Changing a Carina Master to a Backup or Slave

In the unlikely event that you need to change a Carina that is enabled to act as a master to
instead act as a backup or slave, you must first erase the configuration of that master and
restore the unit to its factory default settings. This ensures that there is no contention between
multiple master units on your network. Note that new units from the factory do not require this
procedure since they are not enabled as masters by default. A Carina that is not enabled as a
master will learn its role (backup or slave) from the TDMA table that is transmitted by the master
Carina. This procedure is only required when changing an existing master to act as a backup or
slave.

Before proceeding, be certain that you are willing to erase the master configuration.
This procedure will erase all settings including any static IP address, TDMA table,
passwords, and so on.

Contact Nanometrics support if you need assistance with this procedure. Rather than using the
Carina web browser user interface, this procedure requires you to establish a command-line
SSH connection over the Ethernet network using an SSH client on a PC (PuTTY is a common
one). For help with setting up a PuTTY SSH client on a Windows PC, refer to Nanometrics
technical note How to set up an SSH Client on Windows 18875 (Available from Nanometrics
support site http://support.nanometrics.ca).

To erase the master configuration, make an SSH connection to the unit and issue the following
commands from the command line, one at a time, allowing each one to complete and wait for
the prompt to appear.
1. apollo stop
(Note - This step usually completes in 5 to 20 seconds. However, in rare cases can take
as long as 10 minutes.)

2. rm -rf /home/apollo/config/*
3. rm -rf /home/apollo/config/.cache/*
4. rm -rf /home/apollo/config/.previous/*
5. telnet 1.0.0.2
6. rm config.brdf
7. rm backup.bin
8. reboot
(Note - This step causes the unit to power cycle itself. If a static IP address was
previously configured, it will be lost. After 10 minutes, the unit will have rebooted to its
original factory settings and you can log in as you would with a new unit.)

Upgrade Instructions
There are two recommended methods for upgrading the firmware on a Carina 105 or Cygnus
205 to firmware version 2.1.20:
● If you are upgrading a Cygnus remote unit via its Ethernet connection over a high-speed
network, the Libra User Interface is the recommended method for deployment and
installation. See Upgrading Carina and Cygnus using Ethernet access.
● If you are upgrading a Cygnus over the satellite network, we recommend using FileZilla
to deploy the firmware since it can help to manage slow connections and it can tolerate
gaps or pauses in transmission. See Upgrading Cygnus firmware over a satellite link.

Before you begin, go to Nanometrics support site (http://support.nanometrics.ca) to obtain the

latest firmware upgrade package (.tgz file) and download it to your computer. (Search for Libra II
2.1.20 Firmware) You can also get the latest user guide and release notes from the support site.

Upgrading Cygnus firmware over a satellite link

When upgrading a Cygnus unit over the satellite from a Carina hub, use Filezilla to deploy the
firmware.
1. Obtain the Cygnus 205 satellite port IP address:
a. Log into the Carina 105 web client, select the Cygnus 205 from the Network
Devices list, then note the Cygnus 205 IP address. The IP address should be in
the format 10.x.255.y.
2. Download and install the latest version of Filezilla. (We recommend using the Filezilla
FTP client (https://filezilla-project.org/) to upload the new firmware to the Cygnus 205.)
3. Connect to the Cygnus 205 using Filezilla as follows:
a. Enter the Cygnus 205 IP address in the Host field at the top left.
b. Enter “root” (without the quotes) in the Username field.
c. Enter the root user password in the Password field.
d. Leave the Port field blank, it should be filled in automatically.
e. Click Quickconnect to start the connection.
f. If you are unable to connect to the Cygnus, open a Linux or Windows command
shell and verify that you can reach the Cygnus 205 by running the following
command: ping <IP address> -w 15000
4. The left pane shows the file system for your local machine. Once you are connected, the
right pane will show the file system for the Cygnus 205.
a. In the right pane, navigate to the directory:
/mnt/cf/upgrader/packages/libra
b. In the left pane, navigate to the directory that contains the new firmware *.tgz file.
5. To initiate the upload to the Cygnus 205, in the left pane double-click the *.tgz file.
Filezilla will automatically resume the upload if it is interrupted by connection issues.
Wait for the upload to complete.
6. Once the upload is complete, log on to the Cygnus 205 web client using your “central”
account username and password.
7. Navigate to the Maintenance page and click Firmware Upgrade. You should see the
newly uploaded *.tgz file in the Available firmware list.
