Questions 19 to 24
You are going to read a narrative of a volunteer. Six sentences have been removed from the
article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (19 to 24). There are
two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.
My new life
I used to work as a part-timer at one of the 24-hour convenient stores in Kuala Terengganu. It
wasn’t a bad job and I really liked my friends there, but I began to feel tired of doing the same
thing every day. (19) ____________.
I’d always loves travelling, so one day I typed ‘international volunteering’ into a
famous internet search engine. At the top of the results page was the opportunity to travel and
stay on an island in the Indian Ocean, thousands of miles away from my hometown, and help
to protect the beaches and the marine life. (20) ___________. I had some diving experience,
and the more I talked about it, the more I wanted to do it. (21) ____________. Four days later,
they offered to send me to an island and without having a second thought I accepted.
(22) _______________. After all, the voluntarily work was only for three months during the
semester break. I thought after I’d finished, I’d come home.
As soon as I stepped my feet on the island, I was sure I’d made the right decision. My
first dive there was incredible. (23) ____________. I felt so lucky to be able to experience that
every day.
Frankly, I loved it so much that I never come home! I’ve now been on the island for
twelve years and I am a permanent worker. I’m working as a marine educator, teaching
volunteers about the marine life and taking them snorkelling and diving. My office desk is only
a picnic table. Not everything about my life here is perfect. (24) ___________. However, I

Part 5
Question 25 – 30
We interviewed six teenagers about the popular social media they use frequently. Read the
texts below and answer the questions that follow.
A – Shuhaira, 18 years old
My favourite social media is Instagram. I can just share my compelling photos with my
followers without writing any caption or just a few seconds. I get to connect with people I
don’t know but share common interests with me. I can switch my account to Business Profile
if I want to start a small business here.
B – Amira, 17 years old
I prefer Facebook. It is a free site where registered users (aged 13 and above) can share
pictures, links, videos, and other content with their friends. My friends are other registered
users I have connected with within the network. Most of the time, anything I share will only
be seen by the people I have ‘befriended’.
C – Zul, 18 years old
I like WhatsApp as I can send text and voice messages, animated stickers, make voice and
video calls, and share images, documents, user locations, contacts and music. I can contact
friends without a sim card if connected to a Wi-Fi network. If my mobile internet connection
is strong, I can get an awesome quality of making voice calls and video calls. It takes low
data usage for calling someone.
D – Hab, 15 years old
Like WhatsApp, Telegram can also send messages, voice calls and others. Its biggest point
is it provides unlimited storage. This means all my text messages; images media files and
documents will be saved on their cloud. I can log out and log in any number of times from
any number of devices simultaneously without losing any data, I don’t need to worry about
backup and restore. I can download any file any time anywhere.
E – Anis, 16 years old
TikTok is the trend now. It is a free video sharing app where I can shoot, edit and share short
videos. I can make a variety of short-term videos, from genres like dance, comedy, and
education, that have a duration from 3 seconds to 1 minute. Like other social media apps, I
can follow, like and comment on everything I see.
F – Aisah, 14 years old
WeChat is a super app because of its wide range of functions. It provides text messaging,
hold-to-talk voice messaging, broadcast (one-to-many) messaging, video conferencing,
video games, sharing of photographs and videos as well as location sharing. I can also use
WeChat Pay, an e-wallet service incorporated into the app, which allows me to make
payments and send money with my friends.
