Subjective Tests
Module Introduction:
Arikunto (2007) states that Subjective test is generally a test which needs answers in form generally a test which needs answers in
form of essay, explanation or description. Usually in doing this test, students will be given about 90-120 minutes for 5-10 questions When
a teacher uses subjective test questions, that means students need to use their mind and feelings to make logical claims.

DURATION/HOURS 1.5 hours
SPECIFIC At the end of the session, the students are expected to:
LEARNING a. fill out the KWL Chart with the given topic “Subjective Type Test”;
OUTCOMES: b. associate words that are connected with subjective in a bubble map;
c. define subjective test; and
d. enumerate the advantages and disadvatanges of objective tests.

Discussion of Concept No. 1: What is subjective type test?
❖ Subjective Test
Subjective test require students to write present an original answer. Include short answer essay, extended-response essay,
problem solving, and performance tasks. subjective tests are evaluated based on the judgment or opinion of the examiner. Subjective
tests are more challenging and expensive to prepare, administer and evaluate correctly, but they can be more valid. Tests of this
nature are often designed in a manner in which the student is presented with a number of questions or writing prompts for which
he/she will demonstrate mastery of the learning objective in his/her response to the question. When composing prompts as test
questions, it is crucial that you phrase the prompt clearly and precisely.

Characteristics of Subjective Test


1. Subjective items are generally easier and less time consuming to construct than are most objective test items
2. Different readers can rate identical responses differently, the same reader can rate the same paper differently over time
3. They are pin-pointed, definite and so clear that a single, definite answer is expected.
4.They ensure perfect objectivity in scoring.

5.The scoring will not vary from examiner to examiner.

Discussion of Concept No. 2: What are the advantages and disadvantages of subjective type test?
❖ Advantages of Subjective Test
1. Opportunity to demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities in different ways.
2. Can be used to students writing skills.
3. Provide the ability to formulate arguments supported with reasoning and evidence.
4. Minimizes guessing.
5. Test language proficiency
6. The administrator of a subjective test is generally focused on the test taker’s application of knowledge, rather than information
retention.
❖ Disadvantages of Subjective Test
1. Limited sampling and material covered.
2. Scoring is extremely time consuming.
3. Inadequate scoring key can make the scoring subjective.
4. Unreliable
