Styrofoam Technical Presentation

The document discusses Styrofoam, an extruded polystyrene foam insulation produced by Dow Chemical Company. Key points include: Dow Chemical founded in 1897 and is now the second largest chemical company and largest producer of XPS insulation globally; Styrofoam was invented in 1941 and its use for insulation began in the 1940s and expanded in subsequent decades; it has consistent high insulation values and good compressive strength; and environmental regulations have led Dow to transition production to HCFC-free methods using blowing agents like CO2 that have low global warming potential.

During a continous diffusion process there is an exchange of gases. The cell gas
contains less and less blowing agent and more air. While the λ- value of the air is higher
than the λ- value of the blowing agent gas, the value of the thermal conductivity is
increasing up to a lim it value. The declared aged value is the reference value of the
lam bda reflected to the estimated life-
life- term of the product (50 years).

Soil / roads economic situation

In applications where XPS has a strong comp. adv.

(i.e. compr. strength, water resistance, stability)
project losses are minimal.
