Computer As A Tutor

The document discusses how computers can be used as tutors in education by taking over instructor roles like providing instructions and feedback. It also describes how computers can act as tools, allowing students to receive and apply information, as well as manipulate models to experience the effects of their decisions. The document outlines several types of educational software like simulation, games, and multimedia encyclopedias that can be used constructively by students to build knowledge either individually or cooperatively.

Computer as a Tutor – means the computer acts as a teacher or instructor and take over the teacher’s

roles in giving instructions for the learning process.

 Computer Assisted Instruction play their own roles as learners as they:

 Receives information
 Understand instruction for the computer activity
 Retain in mind the information and rules for the computer activity
 Apply the knowledge and rules during the process of computer learning

During the activity proper in CAI the computer, too, plays its roles as it:

 Acts as a sort of tutor

 Provides a learning environment
 Delivers learning instruction
 Reinforces learning through drill-and-practice
 Provides feedback

Simulation Software Materials – are another kind of software that are constructivist in nature.

These simulation software are:

 Teaches strategies and rules applied to real-life problems/situations

 Asks students to make decision on models or scenarios
 Allows students to manipulate elements of a model and get the experience of the effects of
their decisions.

Instructional Games – are computer games that add an elements of competition and challenge.

Problem Solving Software – are more sophisticated than the drill and practice exercises and allow
students to learn and improve on their problem solving ability.

Multimedia Encyclopedia – can store a huge database with texts, images, animation, audio and video.

Electronic books – provide textual information for reading, supplemented by other types of multimedia
information.

Computer as a Tool – derives the authentic meaning of engaging the computer as a medium for
teaching and learning process.

Constructivism – is the theory that says learners construct knowledge rather than just passively take in
information.

Constructivism – was introduced by Piaget and Bruner.

Social Constructivism – is a sociological theory of knowledge according to which human development is

socially situated and knowledge is constructed.

Based on the two learning theories, the teacher can employ the computer as a/an:

 An information tool
 A communication tool
 A constructive tool
 As co-constructive tool
 A situating tool

Informative tool – computer can provide vast amounts of information in various forms, such as text,
graphics, sound, and video.

Constructive tool – computer itself can be used for manipulating information, visualizing one’s
understanding, and building new knowledge.

Co-constructive tools – it work cooperatively and construct a shared understanding of new knowledge.

Cooperative or collaborative learning – is a learning by small group of students who work together in a
common learning task.

5 elements of collaborative learning:

1. A common goal
2. Interdependence
3. Interaction
4. Individual accountability
5. Social skills

Advantages of Collaborative Learning

 Encourages active learning, while motivating students

 Increases academic performance
 Promotes literacy and language skills; and
 Improve teacher effectiveness

Components of Collaborative Learning

 Assigning students to mixed-ability teams

 Establishing positive interdependence
 Teaching cooperative social skills
 Insuring individual accountability, and
 Helping group process information

2 Kinds of Software

1. System software. This is the operating system that is found or bundled inside all computer
machines.
2. Application software. This contains the system that commands the particular task or solves a
particular problem.

Microsoft Windows – is an operating environment between the user and the computer operating
system.
Microsoft Windows is in itself a self-contained operating system which provides:

 User convenience – just click a file name to retrieve data or click from program to program as
changing channels in your TV screen.
 A new look – fancy borders, smooth and streamlined text fonts.
 Information center – windows puts all communications activities; adapts/configures the
computer for the internet
 Plug and play – configures the computer with added components, such as for sound and video.

Hypermedia – is an extension to what is known as hypertext, or the ability to open new web pages by
clicking text links on a web browser.

Most educational IT applications are hypermedia and these include:

 Tutorial software packages

 Knowledge webpages
 Simulation instructional games; and
 Learning project management, and others

Characteristics of Hypermedia applications:

1. Learner control. This means the learner makes his own decisions on the path, flow or events of
instruction.
2. Learner wide range of navigation routes. Learner controls the sequence and pace of his path
depending on his/her ability and motivation.
3. Variety of media. It includes more than one media, but does not necessarily use all types of
media in one presentation.
