Group Assignment – Summer 2022

Type: Group Assignment

SLOs: 1, 2 and 3
Marks: 25 marks (25%)
Submission Required: Research Report
Softcopy Submission: Canvas, Sunday 22nd January 2022 at 11:55pm

The assignment for Economics for Business 2 is a group assignment. Only a single copy of
each group’s assignment should be submitted online by the group assignment leader by the due
date and time with a completed Group Assignment Coversheet attached to the front (which is
available online). Each member of the group will receive the same grade for the assignment.
Problems with group performance should be brought to the Subject Coordinator’s attention at
the earliest possible time but please try to work out small disagreements before approaching
him. There are some tips about effective group management on Canvas that you might find
useful.

Paper Formatting
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
• Each group should have a maximum of 4 members. It is not accepted to do the
assignment individually as the whole idea behind this assessment is to develop your
skills by working collaboratively
• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch
margins on all sides, 6pt spacing after each paragraph
• The assignment should have around 2,000 words, there is a margin of plus or minus
10%. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment
word limit
• Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the
course title, and the date.
• The assignment should have an executive summary at the front, after the coversheet,
and this should not exceed 200 words
• At the end of the paper, there should also be a list of references that you have cited
throughout the paper. The list references should be arranged in alphabetical order by
author’s name. Citations and references must follow APA format
• In order to organise and present your ideas in a logical sequence, it is preferable to use
headings and subheadings, graphs, tables and figures
• The paper should be written in formal English without spelling errors. It should be
written in intelligible prose that offers explanations and advances arguments rather than
in point form

Approaching the Question
“In Australia, we have a four pillars policy (the ‘Big 4’) for the banking industry. Basically, it
says that the four largest banks, Commonwealth Bank (CBA), Westpac Banking Corporation
(Westpac), Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) and the National
Australia Bank (NAB) are not allowed to merge with each other.
Given the above case study, your manager has asked you to prepare a research paper using the
market structure and difference economics concepts to identify and justify what type of market
structure is the banking industry in Australia. Discuss the rationale behind the Big 4 policy
and the advantages and the disadvantages of such policy. Is this policy (the four pillars policy)
working satisfactorily and comment on the degree of interdependency between these 4 banks.
Discuss the pressures from the FinTech.”

Assessment Criteria
The criteria I will use to grade the assignment are listed on “Group Assignment Grading
Criteria”. It is important to look at these criteria as you work on the assignment so that you
focus on building an effective assignment that will score well. You will be required to assess
your own finished assignment against these criteria before you submit the assignment. Doing
this effectively will improve the peer feedback that will facilitate the “Peer Review Form”
submission. Structuring your assignment deliberately to meet these criteria will also increase
the chance that your assignment will score well.
The criteria focus on the structure of your answer to the question and how it is communicated,
as well as on the content. So, I want you to think explicitly about how you express and write
up your understandings.
You should use papers from the main sources, including published academic papers, and also
official-sector publications such as those from the Reserve Bank of Australia, which has
commented extensively on the Chinese economy, as well as market research and other useful
publicly available commentaries.

Originality and Plagiarism

You really need to make sure that the paper you submit is your group’s own work and is not
taken from other sources without appropriate acknowledgement. The University has severe
penalties for submitting an assignment that is not your own work or that has large amounts of
material that you have either copied from another source or have had prepared on your behalf.
See the Subject Outline for information about the University’s policies regarding plagiarism.
