CHAPTER 1
The Problem and Its Background
I. Nature and Background of the Study
Sari-sari store is one of the businesses that most Filipino families established to
make a living. This is commonly seen in provinces throughout the Philippines,
whereas most cities lack such stores like this. A Sari-sari store is typically shaped
like a small market or grocery store where you can purchase products individually or
in small sizes. This is a type of neighborhood sundry store, where you can find it
whether around your neighborhood or along the streets because typically, a
business like this is just located in their homes. Most Filipino tend to choose this kind
of business because starting a Sari-sari store does not require a huge capital.
Even if we can say that it doesn't require a lot of capital, somehow there are
downsides and challenges that a sari-sari store owner will face. Other consumers
like to purchase bulk products for them to stock in their pantries. They think they can
spend less money when buying groceries rather than in Sari-sari stores. But then,
some Filipino families cannot afford to shop at a grocery store or to stock products in
their homes so it will be better for them to purchase in Sari-sari stores nearby their
houses. Like any other businesses, Sari-sari store owners also have strategies for
them to earn incomes, like having a complete variety of necessities and foods that
an individual needs.
They also lower their price depending on where they get their products for them to
resell. Sari-sari Store is claimed to be the most common Filipino family business and
source of income, which is why DTI from South Luzon provided livelihood kits to 20
Filipino families from Angono Rizal through their program "Pangkabuhayan sa
pagbangon at ginhawa." This is a Negosyo package for them to start a Sari-sari
store that comes with a business permit to assist other families in generating income
from this type of small business. Sari-sari stores have proven to be extremely
beneficial to Filipino families, particularly those living in poverty. This becomes a

stepping stone to managing a business and can be done in the comfort of our own
homes.
Sari-sari stores encountered problems during the pandemic, some of them closed.
A lot of Filipino store owners suffered since they couldn't sell well. Government
issued a limited time for store owners to open their shops because of this many
stores’ owners incurred income loss. And because of the rising inflation rate, Filipino
citizens are just going to the market to buy their needs to save on the price instead
of buying in sari-sari stores. And through the liquor ban that had ensued, one of the
most bought products, sari-sari store owners lost supplemental income.
Additionally, sari-sari store owners had a hard time buying products because some
Filipino citizens hoarding the market goods, resulting in a limit on their bought goods
for their sari-sari store because of low supply of market goods at the marketplace.
And store owners had to wait for their barangay’s turn before they could buy
products for their shops again, an emerging problem of procuring more products for
their sari-sari stores. And, since the travel ban had been issued, sari-sari store
owners have had a hard time procuring other goods they have to sell considering
that the product they want to buy can’t be procured in their town. Beside that, the
fare for transportation increased which forces store owners to increase the prices
they sell to recover their expenses from buying products.
Sari-sari store owners' income became lesser because of the pandemic, due to
being that hard time of selling products causing some goods to expire. Some store
owners experience capital loss because of the short storage of their products
resulting in customers buying their needs to other stores. It became harder for store
owners who experienced income loss to manage their store because they can’t
collect enough capital for another restocking of their supply goods for their sari-sari
store.
financial state become unstable. Some sari-sari stores became inactive due to a
pandemic making them short on capital for their business.
This study aims to determine the strategies and challenges of sari-sari store owners
in Angono, Rizal to learn their experience and to recognize the importance of
supporting sari-sari stores as for being cognizant to your environment. The
researcher seeks to find if sari-sari stores are necessary to satisfy the needs of
people, and does it help other sari-sari owners to enhance their critical thinking skills
and strategies when it comes into this kind of phenomenon.
Specifically, this study aims to find the answer to the following problems:
This study should be a useful source of summary information for people looking into
the effects of the pandemic on sari-sari store owners' lives. We are conducting this
study to compare the life of the sari-sari store before and during the pandemic.
Before the pandemic, the store had a lot of customers, which meant greater
earnings for them. However, some changes occurred, such as sari-sari store owners
suffered from government's strictness in not allowing them to leave, resulting in only
a few people shopping at the time.
Small business owners will benefit from our study because they will gain insight into
how to expand their businesses. Not only will they get an idea, but they will also get
a strategy for managing and operating their small business.
