Homework #5

1. (a) Describe the ideal characteristics of an opamp for:

(i) Differential gain (high)
(ii) Common-mode gain (low)
(iii) CMRR (high)
(iv) Input bias current (low)
(v) Input resistance (high)
(vi) Output resistance (low)
(b) A circuit has a voltage gain of 0.05 V/V. Convert to dB. 20log(0.05)=-26dB
(c) A circuit has a voltage gain of 50 dB. Convert this to V/V. 10^(50/20)=316V/V

2. Below is listed the transfer function of an amplifier:

• Am=20log(10)=20dB

• 3 low inverted zeroes (-20dB/dec slope before ω =10) => -60dB/dec until ω=1k

• 1 low inverted pole (+20 dB/dec slope before ω=1k)

• 1 high frequency pole at ω=10k (-20dB/dec slope after ω=10k)

Sketch the magnitude (not phase) Bode plot for this system using a straight line approximation. Label fL and fH, label
frequencies, gains, and slopes of interest.

• 1 high frequency pole at ω=10k (-20dB/dec slope after ω=10k)

Sketch the magnitude (not phase) Bode plot for this system using a straight line approximation. Label fL and fH, label
frequencies, gains, and slopes of interest.

fL=10rad/sec; fH=10,000rad/sec.

4. Analyze the following circuit to find the transfer function Vout/Vs. Solve the circuit symbolically first (with R1, R2, R3,
R4, C) and then plug in their values. Create a rough sketch of the transfer function using a straight-line approximation
procedure. C=100nF

5. (worth 2 problems) (a) In an active-loaded differential amplifier of the form below, all transistors are characterized

Since this is the current going through the transistor, ICS=200µA

(b) Using VDD=1.8V and a pair of matched MOSFETs, design the current-source circuit shown below to provide an output
current of 200µA nominal value. Assume this value is when Vo≅VGS. It is further required that the circuit operate for Vo
in the range of 0.2V to VDD. Find the required value of R. For the current-source, use µnCox=400µA/V2, |V’A|=10V/µm,
and Vt=0.5V. Draw the complete circuit.

Since Vo=0.2V = VDS when at the threshold VDS=VGS-Vt => VGS=0.2+0.5=0.7V (this is the minimum value
which is the concern for crossing from saturation to triode region.
