INTRODUCTION

Honeywell’s extensive experience in providing Datalink systems to airline operators varies from operators just at the
outset of setting up their system, through to those airlines who have worked with this system since its introduction into
the aviation world nearly 20 years ago.

The most important lesson we have learned, is that every airline has its own specific requirements, and no two airlines
are the same.

For this reason, the Honeywell AOC Application has been designed with the goal of maximum flexibility, in order to
allow every operator to customize their messages and cockpit interface to suit THEIR specific requirements.

The Standard Mark II CMU Database is provided with a default set of AOC functions. These are provided so that an
operator has a starting point for their ACARS operation. A minimum set of functions may be used, including the
sending of messages related to OUT, OFF, ON, and IN times and Free Text Messages. Where possible, standard
ARINC message formats are implemented. The process of configuring the AOC features may be deferred by an airline
while gaining experience with the day to day operations of the CMU.

Note that the MK II CMU database includes the operator’s airline identifier which therefore means that each operator
requires a customized database. Please contact Honeywell if and when you would like to begin the process of
customizing the AOC to best meet your needs.

Concept of Operation

The Communications Management Unit (CMU) is used to send and receive data messages from the ground. The
primary data link used by the CMU is the VHF3ARINC 716 radio. This mode of communications is referred to as Plain
Old ACARS (POA). Additionally, the CMU offers optional software called ACARS over AVLC (AOA) which greatly
increases the throughput on the VHF channel by using an ARINC 750 VHF Data Radio (VDR). The CMU may also be
connected to a Satellite Data Unit (SDU) as well as to an HF Data Unit (both of which are optional equipment on the
aircraft).

Avionics on board the aircraft such as DMU, CMC, FMC and Cabin terminals may be connected to CMU for the
purpose of sending messages to and receiving messages from the ground. In addition, CMU displays MCDU screens to
the crew for the purpose of reviewing data, sending requests and reports to the ground and displaying messages received
from the ground.

The CMU also receives information such as Registration Number, from other avionics devices on the ARINC 429 bus
as well as from discrete inputs.

Messages from the ground are sent to the CMU. CMU examines the message and either stores the message or routes it
to other avionics depending on the destination encoded in the message. Uplink messages maintained by the CMU are
displayed on a RECEIVED MESSAGES MCDU screen. The crew can display or print the messages.

Typical CMU configurations require little or no maintenance activity once installed with the appropriate software
downloaded into memory. Software is downloaded using either the Airborne Data Loader or Portable Data Loader or
PCMCIA media.

Additional detailed information can be found in the CMU Line Maintenance Manual (998-3044-600).

HIF-2121/R5 CAGE CODE: 97896 SCALE: NONE SIZE: A DWG NO. 998-3212-600 REV: A SHEET 15
ACARS Menu System
The ACARS functions are organized into a menu structure. The top-level menu is called the Main Menu and varies
depending upon the current flight phase of the aircraft. The PREFLT Menu is initially displayed at power up. And stays
displayed until take-off at which point the INFLT Menu will be displayed. At touchdown, the POSTFLT menu is
displayed and remains displayed until the end-of-flight indication which is defined to be the IN event plus N minutes
where N is defined in the database. At this point, the PREFLT menu is again displayed.

There are two basic types of screen definitions: database-defined and hard-coded. Database-defined screens are those
that are customizable by changes to the database. Hard-coded screens are those that are defined in the operational
software and are not changeable by the database. In the following menu structure, everything starting with the MISC
menu and below are hard-coded screens. Other hard-coded screens include all the functions on the ATS Menu (ATIS,
DCL REQ and OCEANIC REQ) as well as the RECEIVED MESSAGES and SENT MESSAGES screens.

The following pages depict the menu hierarchy of the ACARS system.

Data Frequency Display

This is the MCDU screen for VHF data frequency selection. Data frequency choices are defined in the database. Each
frequency is also assigned to be used within specific geographic regions. The frequency displayed on line two, shows
the currently selected frequency or the one that is currently being tried. The letter prefix, indicates the current state of
the frequency selection.: A = frequency selected using position data; M = frequency manually selected; R = frequency
set by autotune uplink from the ground; S = scanning for frequency; D = frequency selected using scan and listen
method (no position data available); T = Test Frequency entered on Maintenance page.
We strongly recommend that frequency selection be left in the AUTOMATIC mode (LSK6R). Only, in exceptional
situations, e.g. for testing, the user can manually select a VHF data frequency for datalink operation. This manual
selection overrides the one being determined by the automatic mode of selection based on aircraft position and pre-
defined world map in the database. Once a manual override is done using this page, it will not revert back to automatic
mode even if NOCOMM results. Therefore, it is important to reselect AUTOMATIC before leaving this page.

OOOI Logic Reconfiguration

OUT Logic:
There are 4 sets of criteria that can be manipulated to cause the OUT event. Each of these paths can be disabled, so
you can set up logic so that only one set of criteria will cause the OUT event to occur, or you can set up logic so that 4
sets of criteria are defined, and whichever condition is reached first will cause the OUT event to occur.
The criteria is set up in the database.

The 4 paths are:

1) Doors closed and parking brake release;can be customized to:
a) never be used
b) to ignore avionics and cargo doors, or
c) to only be used if engine and/or ground speed data are not being received
2) Engine power > some threshold defined in the database;
default threshold is set to 85%, this can be set to any value 1 - 99% or if set to 0%, then this path is disabled
3) Aircraft is moving
a. default set so that if airplane is moving 1.5 knots different than when doors are closed or after IRS is
realligned then OUT will occur.
b. threshold can be set to different number of knots, or to detect airplane movement at all times, instead of just
difference from when doors close.
c. if threshold and interval are set to 0 then this path is disabled
4) ground speed threshold is reached.
This option is not activated by default. This option can be set so that when an absolute measure of ground speed
occurs after initial pushback, then the out event will occur.
This path, requires use of pushback logic, via database flag setting.

OFF Logic:
Strut = OFF

ON Logic:
Strut = ON

IN Logic:
There are two paths from ON state to IN state.
1) ON, parking brake is set, then one door opens. IN time = last time the parking brake is set. This is the default setting.
For example, touchdown, taxi, brake set at 9:30, brake released and more taxi, brake set at 9:42, door opens 9:46, IN
time = 9:42
2) ON, parking brake never set and one door opens. IN time = time the door opens

Path #1 can be customized so that if touchdown, brake is set, then brake is released, then door opens before reset of
the brake … then the IN time = the time the door opens.

For example, touchdown, taxi, brake set at 9:30, brake released and more taxi, door opens 9:46,
With traditional path #1, IN time = 9:30 (last time the brake was set)
With customized path #1, IN time = 9:46 (door open time).

2nd example, touchdown, taxi, brake set at 9:30, brake released and more taxi, brake set at 9:42, door opens 9:46.
With traditional path #1, IN time = 9:42 (last time the brake was set)
With customized path #1, IN time = 9:42 also.

Note that if cargo and avionics doors are excluded for the OUT event logic, they are automatically excluded from the IN
event logic as well.

429 Data Acquisition Reconfiguration

• Each aircraft type has unique IO configuration

• Systems may be attached to different physical ports on the CMU
• Data may be broadcast using different 429 labels and SDI
• Availability of broadcast data will determine what information is available to the CMU and what will need to be entered
manually.
• Data broadcast to the CMU from the FMC can depend upon the OPC configuration is some Boeing aircraft
• Data broadcast to the CMU from the ACMS depends upon the ACMS database definition.
