PSV Calculation PSV-201

This document provides calculations for determining the out of balance forces on a relief valve for both open and closed gas/vapour systems. It includes the formulas used for the main calculation under subcritical flow conditions and an alternative calculation method to use when the gas velocity exceeds the sonic velocity. The relevant parameters such as orifice area, set pressure, inlet/exit temperatures, discharge rate and molecular weight are provided. The results of applying the formulas to this specific relief valve show forces of 17598N and 32877N for the open and closed systems respectively under subcritical flow conditions.
