Chinese Lantern Weaving Craft

You will need:


• Printed template of your choice (best on
colourful card)
• Strips of colourful paper
• Scissors
• Glue
• (Optional) Felt tip pens

1) First, cut around the edge of your chosen template and


up each weaving line.

2) Next, cut colourful strips of paper. You can choose colours


to suit your colour theme. I have chosen reds and golds. You
can decide how thick your strips of paper will be. It can
look effective to have a mixture of strip widths.

3) The trickiest strip is the one at the top of the lantern. You
may only be able to weave it through some of the middle
strips, so we recommend to start weaving from the middle
for this strip.

4) After you have finished weaving each strip, add a bit of


glue to either end of the strip to secure.

5) Then start weaving the next strip. Remember, this strip


should follow the opposite pattern to the one above it. If the
top strip is under, this strip will be over.

6) Make sure to push each strip up as far as it will go so it


sits as close to the bottom of the previous strip as possible.

7) After each strip has been woven, secure with a small dab
of glue.

8) If you do not have many different colours of paper, try


using felt tip pens to add patterns to each strip before you
weave it. This can make some really interesting woven
designs.

9) When you have finished weaving the last strip, go along


the whole bottom securing the ends of the original cut
strips. If you see any loose ends, add a dab of glue to secure
them.

10) Then, turn your lantern over and trim the overhanging
strips away from the edge of the template.

11) Glue two rectangles of card to the back, at the top and
bottom of your lantern.

12) You can then choose to add some extra strips of paper to
the bottom of your lantern, and some string to the top.
