COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Formulate mathematical models for linear, time-invariant electrical, mechanical
electromechanical systems.
2. Reduce block diagram and signal flow graph representations to a single transfer
function.
3. Analyse and design control system specifications in the time domain.
4. To Determine the stability of control systems.
COURSE OUTCOMES: At the end of this course, the students will be able to:

CO3 Analyses the stability of Linear Time Invariant systems
CO4 Implement a suitable controller for a given system and validate through
simulations.

Course Contents:

1 Modelling of Systems and Block diagram: Introduction to 10 CO1
Control Systems, Types of Control Systems, with examples.
Concept of mathematical modelling of physical systems-
Mechanical, Translational (Mechanical accelerometer, systems
excluded), and Rotational systems, Analogous systems based on
force voltage analogy and force current analogy. Introduction to
Block diagram reduction.
2 Signal Flow graph: Introduction to Signal Flow graph, Mason’s 06 CO1
gain formula Obtaining Transfer functions for the given SFG CO2
using Mason’s gain formula.
Time response analysis: Introduction. Standard test signals,
response of first order & second order systems for unit step input.
Time domain specifications- Steady state errors & Error
constants.
3 Concepts of stability: The Concept of stability. Necessary 06 CO1
conditions for stability. Hurwitz stability criterion. Routh CO3
stability criterion. Relative stability analysis using R-H Criterion.
The Root Locus Technique: Introduction. Root locus concepts
Construction of root loci. Stability analysis using Root locus
Techniques.
4 Frequency domain Analysis: Introduction to frequency domain 10 CO1
analysis, Correlation between time & frequency response, CO2
advantages of Frequency response Over time response.
Frequency domain specifications-Stability analysis using Polar
plot-Nyquist plot- Bode Plot
