Church Multiplication
Introduction
In his book, Church Planting for a Greater Harvest, C. Peter Wagner declared a truth that has iow
bbecome a widely recognized, "Church planting isthe best methodology of evangelism under the
sun” (1). T-Net will teach you to engage in church planting in its most natural form by starting
Outreach Come and See groups, For our purposes, we will acknowledge these evangelistic “small
‘groups as “house churches.” Your past experiences have likely shaped your eoncept ofa church,
‘You may think ofa church building, Sunday morning worship services, a paid pastor, children’s
programs, ct. But these were net typical ofthe churches established in the Book of Acts by the
Apostle Pal
I. What is a Church?
Consider this definition ofa church by David Watson: The church is @ group of bapized
believers in the Lord Jesus Christ who meet regularly to worship. nurture one another, and
fellowship and depart these gatherings endeavoring to obey all the commands of Christin
‘order 10 transform individuals, families, and communities, And we would add “%o make
disciples to finish the Great Commission.”
A. The Goal of Establishing New Churches
1. Our goal will be to see these Discovery Bible Studies from within their subeulture
grow to become a “church.” As the people in the Come and See DBS mature to
‘become baptized believers and on to be Follow Me and Be with Me disciples, the
group or groups will begin to emerge as a church as defined above.
2. Please understand that we are talking about a very “simple church.” We might not
leven need to call ita church, Perhaps the term mid-sized missional community
‘would be a descriptive name that would suffice. If the Come and See Discovery
Bible Studies replicate within the same affinity group, the numbers may’be such that
3 or 4of these small groups will begin to meet together for worship and teaching,
‘each week (maybe on Sunday moming, perhaps not). Leaders will emerge as we
mentor them, The process may take a few years for the frst Come and Sce DBS to
become a small church or a mid-sized group
3. We might hope that this “church” would have a close relationship with our mother
‘church. Maybe some of the people in it wll enjoy being a part ofthe Sunday
‘moming worship service and may want to enrol their kids in the mother churches
children’s and youth ministry, The mother church will eed to expand its identity to
include those who have come to Christ from a different cultural pocket and who may
for may not want fo participate in othor activities the mother church has to offer.
4. Remember, our primary goal to finish the Great Commission in your city and region.
As C. Peter Wager says, “Church planting is the best methodology of evangelism
under the sun.” And Outreach Come and See groups provide the first step in
cstablishing the expansion of Christ’s Chureh
8, Multiplying Leader “On-the-Job
1. This entire process is about multiplying leaders. Multiplying leaders is an “on-the-
job” process. Skills and the ability to lead dovelop naturally, and the DNA of the
(Com and Se Phase Serntes ' T-Netintematonal tntwork comDiscovery process becomes second nature through habitual practice. At the heart of|
this proces isthe study’ of the Bible to Become obedient followers of Christ.
2. Very few people can become leaders of large groups lke churches of hundreds or of
thousand people. Itakes a pretty charismatic and effective leader to get peopl 10
abandon their cultural affinity group for a new foreign one like the typical,
evangtical church, Leaders ke that are few and far between, But ts guite
‘common for people to be able to infucnce small groups ofS or 6 people or even
_groups of groups of 40 to 50 people within their subelture
Through mentonng and guided practice, we can see many leaders emerge within
thir natural afinity groups. Most of the time, thse people will lead be leaders
‘within that community
IL. Using the Six Steps to Move a DBS to a Simple Church
A. Review the Six Steps
1. First from Course 2 Making and Multiplying Disciples apprentice manual, reviow
the Six Steps we have presented for launching a Church Planting Movement fom
‘your church using the Discovery Bible Study process,
‘= Step One: Start by training disciples who can make disciples using a Follow
Me DBS.
+ Step Two: In this group. help these disciples become persons of prayer 50 that
‘God can load them to.
‘Step Throc: Engage the lst and
‘Step Four: Find Persons of Peace with whom they wil:
+ Sup Five: Start Come and See Discovery Bible Studies that will evangelize
an disciple a group of people
‘+ Step Six: This group of ae disciples grows, multiplies and mentored to form a
small church
2. These Six Steps will raise leaders who, if they continue the process, wll finish the
Great Commission ina region or among a people group.

B. A Review of Ralf Winter's E-Scalo
1 Missiologist Ralf Winter made the following observation several years ago. He says
‘hata given church from cultural group EO can reach people similar to itselEl. The
Aesignation E2 represents people ncar them, but who are ofa different culture. The
‘designation E3 is for people who are both clturally and geographically distant. For
‘example, in Acts 1:$the church in emusalem (E0) needs to reach the poople of |
dtudea(E1), then Samaria (E2), and the ends ofthe earth (E3). (Winter, Koch)
Eseale
‘Winters observation was that a church (EO) could reach the people ike itself (1)
bout need to plant a church to reach the people near it but who were ofa different
culture (E2).
3. The chart below reflects this dual approach of planting Outreach Come and See DBS
Groups within the chureh to reach unsaved (E0) and (E1) people while also plating
‘Outreach Come and See DBS Groups in new cultures (E2) outside of the church
C. Charting the Multiplication Process
“The Model Follow Me DBS will build leaders for disciple making ministry within and
outside the church. Churches can most caily rach and disciple those who are within the

Below the line (X=Disciple Maker, PoP=Person of Peace) are outreach ministries best to
seach new cultures (F2).
IIT. Bring it All Together Step by Step
‘Now lets use our T-Net trsning to demonsiate hws we can multiply disciples and
harsh wing the DBS process,
‘A. We Begin With Your Existing Church.
1 Werwill us the worship services symbol to represent your church
2. From your church you have started a Model Follow Me group. Init you will now be
‘sing the DBS process.
B. Stop One: We Must “Be Disciples to Make Disciples.”
1. Form a Follow Me group. Establish an excellent disciple path for your church,
2. Multiply new disciple making smal group leaders fom the Model Follow Me
‘group. Apprentice leaders in your model group to become leaders of other Come and
See and Follow Me DBS groups wit poople within your church andthe El people
‘whom you reach with your existing church

lives.

‘create a Disciple path for your church using the DBS
Process anda definition ofa dcp for each phase
C. Steps Two and Three: “Pray for” and “Engage the Lost”
1. Using the DNA of the DBS process, all the people in your disciple pathway within
‘your church will begin to engage the lost, will be sharing their faith, and will be
‘praying to find Persons of Peace. Someone at sometime will connect with a Person
of Peace from outside of your EOVE1 pocket. When this happens you or another
‘mature leader will help the person from your church start a Come and See DBS with
the Person of Peace and you will begin to coach the Person of Peace
2. The more people in your church who have become disciples the more likely your
cchurch will be to find one or more Persons of Peace from different pockets or to find
seckers from your own El community. It takes disciples to make disciples and the
more disciples you have the more disciples you will make
D. bene Four and Five: Find a “Person of Peace” and “Start a DBS”
‘When your church finds a Person of Peace, begin an Outreach Comte and Sov group
with his person, their family. and any fiends they’ may invite to join them.
2. Begin the Creation to Christ study with the Person of Peace using the DBS
process, Afler 5 to 7 lessons, tum the facilitation of the study group overt the
Person of Peace. Or use the best leaders ofthe group. Remember, the outside leader
is sookingto find, quip, and unleash the inside leader. Thon aftora coupe of years

3. You leave the group, but you do not abandon the leader. Continue to meet weekly.
withthe leader to review that week's study and help them along,
4. Coach them through the Come and See phase into the Follow Me phase. (This
will mean sharing the gospel, introduce baptism, give assurance of salvation, and
answer questions as they anise.)
b, The DNA ofthe Discovery Ble Study process, with its emphasis on obedience,
caring, and sharing, will produce the growth of faith that will ead to salvation
[Come and See Phase Scriptures 5 “T-Net Intemational tnetwork comand an increase of commitment, which will lead toa desire for more and a
willingness to do homework
6 Its emphasis on caring and sharing will kely lead to more people and more
_groups. You should coach your leader to help other persons to st groupe in
theirhomes,
E, Step Six: Gather Multiple DBS groups as “Mid-Sized Group Church Plant”
|. Multiply Discovery Bible Studies. Group one may grow lager and may also start,
‘tore Come and See groups. Group #1 will become (in maybe 6 months) a Follow
“Me group made up of believers who are committed to growth and who are helping
‘others start Come and Sec groups (X=Disciple Maker, PoP=Person of Peace).
2. Gather these E2 Groups into a Mid-Sized Group. All ofthese groups can now
begin to mect also as one mid-sized group. You could call this a church plant, The
‘ope in th Follow Me phase will ned to transition to Be with Me studce, You
ould take them through passages that help thom understand what a church is, See
‘the Scripture lst in the booklet, Discovery Bible Siudy-Phased Diselple Path

8. Gather Group Leaders ito a Ministry Community. At tis point would make

IV. Provide Phased Disciple Path for Discovery Bible Studies
[We want to continue to allow the multiplication of Come and See DBS groups, so these
have no bariers placed before them by the church, We allow nonbelicvers and nsw

believers to become filly devoted disciples of Jesus and to establish churches for worship,

‘You, the church planter shouldbe prepared to guide your Discovery Bible Sadics through a
series of suis that will eventually establish them as a church. Inthe booklet, Discovery
Bible Study-Phased Disetple Pash Scripture, we have pt together a collection of DBS
Scriptures for each of Jesus’ four disciple making phases. Select DBS Scriptures from this
