Eight days, one prologue plus seven stages, 691kms
and finally, 15.400 meters elevation. Battles are
fought in two-man teams, the second rider's ranking
is included in the total ranking. Ideally, both riders
cross the finish line together.

The SRSUNTOUR WERX Team Centurion Vaude

started with two teams. Team 1: Markus Kaufmann
and Jochen Käss, Team 2: Daniel Geismayr and
Nicola Rohrbach.

After the Prologue, Team 1 took 3rd place. The pro-

logue serves as an initial gridding organiser. The real
pain and suffering would come with the first stage.
Centurion Vaude teams 1 and 2 were at the front of
the field right from the start fighting for the podium. A
brutal heat wave tormented everyone and for safety
reasons, a mammoth day in the saddle was shortened.
Consequently, race strategy had to be amended and
the long-distance specialists were at a disadvantage.

On the long stages the teams could play to their
strengths. They hammer a constantly high pace at
the front, putting everyone under pressure. It’s a war
of attrition and everyone knows the winners won’t be
decided until after the final stage. Each day the riders
are called into battle by the bagpiper. From the three-
hour mark, the first elite riders start to appear at the
finish. With stages of 100km and more, the average STAGES
PROLOGUE (Distance 26km, Climbing 750m, Meerendal)
speeds are blistering. STAGE 1 (Distance 101km, Climbing 2300m, Hermanus – Hermanus)
STAGE 2 (Distance 62km, Climbing 1500m, Hermanus – Greyton)
STAGE 3 (Distance 78km, Climbing 1650m, Greyton – Greyton)
On the penultimate day, Team 2 is in 4th place with STAGE 4 (Distance 112km, Climbing 2150m, Greyton – Elgin)
a gap of five minutes to the third placed team. As STAGE 5 (Distance 84km, Climbing 2100m, Elgin – Elgin)
others teams fall away, unable to follow, the gap STAGE 6 (Distance 103km, Climbing 2750m, Elgin – Elgin)
STAGE 7 (Distance 85km, Climbing 1350m, Elgin – Val de Vie in Paarl)
starts to come down. By the end of the stage, they’ve
erased the gap and opened up a gap of their own.
Team 1 battled hard all day and moved to 9th place.

CLOCKWISE The mechanics have the hardest job. After
each stage finish all four bikes need to be cleaned, disas-
sembled and re-assembled and all by 5am the following
day / A lot of the trails go through vineyards, major part of
the cape area are wine-growing estates / In a two man
team the last man’s result counts. Tactics play no small
part on 100km+ stages / Early morning before the race
starts is the best time, still cool, some moisture in the air
and no dust / The sun usually rises after the race start.
The view is always worth a postcard shot.

For SRSUNTOUR the Cape Epic is the ultimate
test. Over the winter, a setup for the marathon rid-
ers was developed as part of the suspension test
camp. Despite the short travel, the suspension
must work sensitively and absorb the micro-vibra-
tions which would otherwise lead to rider fatigue.
At the same time, the rider’s power must be trans-
ferred efficiently into the drivetrain rather than

The AXON WERX F with the new PCS cartridge

can come down to ultra-fine margins. One slight rider error can
cost you a few one-hundredths of a second. Perhaps the compo-
nent hasn’t reached its full potential yet or hasn’t been adjusted
perfectly to meet the rider’s demands. It may often be an accu-

known flaws. And then there is still, good old-fashioned, plain and
simple, bad luck.

The 2017 Megavalanche was struck by bad weather this year, lead-
ing to the glacier section and complete upper half of the course
being removed from the race. In other words, the course was
drastically shortened. Instantly, Remy Absalon was at a disadvan-
tage. The legendary Megavalanche rider, Remy, is a rider who rev-
els on long courses. Nevertheless, you can only race what’s put KMC-FRUIT TO GO

in front of you and Remy still managed to come well inside the
top ten in 7th place. That’s how racing is. It’s a sport outside and
outside can be unpredictable.

At the Downhill World Cup in Lourdes, Alexandre Fayolle started

early in the final and finished with a fabulous time, racing in the
arguably best of the weather conditions. The final ten riders down
the hill had to contend with the worst of the weather and couldn’t
crack Alexandre’s time. The result not only gave Alexandre his first

ly after Lourdes, it was Tracey Hannah’s turn, this time in bonny
Scotland at Fort William. Tracey had already shown in training
and qualies that she was on form and had to be considered a fa-
vourite. Perhaps, you argue that the noticeable absentee through
injury opened the door slightly wider for Tracey, but being one of
the favourites on a big old monster of a course like Fort William,
makes no difference. The only way to win is to be the fastest rider,

The area hugs the small desert town of Virgin Utah in the United States.
Perched on the top of the mountain, the start line launches the riders over
seemingly countless ridges and canyons. As a result, the lines are so tech-
nically demanding that the number of riders prepared to sacrifice them-
selves at this alter of freeriding is dwindling year on year. Rather than shy-
ing away SRSUNTOUR and the RUX have been competing since 2012. The
new Rampage format does not have qualification runs. Only 10 pre-qualified
athletes and 10 wildcard holders will make it to the 2 run finals. Kurt Sorge
(2015 Rampage winner) was pre-qualified. 2 additional very capable WERX
athletes made it into the competition: James Doerfling and Carson Storch.

best trick award with a humongous 360° drop.
Kurt Sorge came 4th and James Doerfling 14th.
