Internet Safety

It refers to the online security or safety of people and their information when using the internet.
 
The introduction of World Wide Web and internet has made great break thought in the field of
information sharing and communication. It helped connect people miles away from each other.
However, these advances carried drawbacks wherein the issue of safety, security and ethics of
the consumers are compromised.

ONLINE SAFETY

Refers to the practices and precautions that should be observed when using the internet to
ensure that the users as well as their computers and personal information are safe from crimes
associated with using the internet.

Common issues and crimes on the internet:

Cyberbullying or cyberharassment is a form of bullying


or harassment using electronic means. Cyberbullying
and cyberharassment are also known as online
bullying. It has become increasingly common,
especially among teenagers, as the digital sphere
has expanded and technology has advanced.

Hacking is an attempt to exploit a computer system or a


private network inside a computer. Simply put, it is the
unauthorized access to or control over computer network
security systems for some illicit purpose. 

Identity theft is the crime of obtaining the personal or


financial information of another person for the sole purpose of
assuming that person's name or identity to make transactions
or purchases. 

Plagiarism is a type of cheating that involves the use of another


person's ideas, words, design, art, music, etc., as one's own in
whole or in part without acknowledging the author or obtaining his or her permission.

Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind, such as


inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols,
names, and images used in commerce. Copyright, then, is the
protection extended to the creator of an original work. 

These issues causes the formulation of the rules and regulations to be followed when using the
internet. Since the internet, especially the social media, allows you to post everything every day,
some personal information might be given to seen by unknown people.

Online safety and security defines how you are going to keep yourself safe while surfing the
web.

ONLINE SAFETY MEASURES


• Never give any personal information out about yourself over the Internet.
• Do not give any banking or sensitive information unless you are sure that it is a
reputable business having a secure service. To make sure that you are in a secured
network, the website address should begin with “https://” as opposed to “http://”. Never
access your accounts by following an email link, instead type the URL by yourself.
• Never open messages or attachments from someone you do not know.
 Regularly review your privacy settings in your online accounts to make sure you are not
sharing important personal information.
 When using a public computer terminal, be sure to delete your browsing data before
leaving.
 Keep your software updated to avoid security holes.
 Do not download or install software or anything on your computer or cell phone that is
unknown to you.

Online Ethics and Netiquette

Online ethics focuses on the acceptable use of online resources in


an online environment. Netiquette, on the other hand, focuses on the
acceptable behavior of the person while using the internet resources.
These rules are important as they promote communication skills,
prevent miscommunications, and help you understand what is
socially acceptable when working and collaborating online.

Many websites and organizations have


created their own list of netiquettes for Quick Lab 1 -2: How are you going to
kids, teens, and even parents for them to promote ethical use of these resources and
be able to protect their child exhibit proper etiquette while being connected
online?
The core rules of netiquette: The world is more linked today than it has

Since the web is a maze of connected data and information, you may not be able you to really
get the best out of it when searching. Search engine, on the other hand, have their own systems
of giving the best result. But this can be solved by helping the computer in searching by using
advance techniques in information gathering.

Is a software system that is designed to carry out web search.
GOOGLE is the best example of search engine, why? Because of the relevant result,
uncluttered, easy to read interface, and helpful options to broaden or tighten a search.

Quick Quiz 1:
List down five different search engines that you know. Which one works the best for you and
why?
The five search engines are namely Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask.com, and Yandex.
The best that works for me is Google. It has a wide-variety of information. It is easy to use. It
is safer than other search engines.

What is Online Search?


Online search is the process of interactively searching for and retrieving requested information
via a computer from databases that are online. Interactive searches became possible in the
1980s with the advent of faster databases and smart terminals.
Advantages and Disadvantages:

Advantages:
• Ability to obtain a large sample, which increases statistical power
• Data is automatically coded so no data entry errors
• Reduced cost of conducting research
Disadvantages:
• Online is not totally secure and theft is one of the numerous danger it poses,
researchers personal information is at risk of being access by rogue persons.
• Some of the materials on the internet have not been evaluated by experts or thoroughly
screened.
• Lack of accreditation and low quality

Research Skills:

“Research” sometimes just means finding out information about a topic. You can certainly
develop advanced information retrieval skills in Working with Sources. However, in specific
understandings of “research” carry a lot of weight. The classic definition is that “research” leads
to an original contribution to knowledge in a particular field of inquiry by defining an important
question or problem and then answering or solving it in a systematic way.
So you will need to read on to develop a relevant understanding of what research means in your
subject.

Important aspects of research:

• Research design covers the key issues in developing a successful research project.
• Research methods takes you to resources on essential techniques for carrying out
convincing research.
• Working with data will provide resources on the use of statistics and other numerical
skills in research.

Some examples of research skills that you may have include:

1. Report writing.
2. Analysing lots of information from different sources.

Improving your research skill online:
 
1. Know your sources – make sure to find the most reliable information which can be found in
multiple sources or, better, to have the original source.
 
2. Use your web browser properly – know the capabilities of your preferred browser to help
make your search faster and easier.
 
3. Organize your bookmarks - use your browser’s bookmark manager to organize the links
you have marked. If possible, create folders or sub folders. 
 
4. Learn to use advanced search techniques – practice using advance search techniques
which are readily available in google for instance.
 
5. follow the web – follow the wave of information in the web. Just make sure to read and be
critical in every link or page you click.
