Week 12 Building Utilities 3

Luminaires are lighting fixtures that consist of a lamp, optical components to distribute light, sockets to hold the lamps, and mechanical components to support or attach the fixture. They generally have light sources, light control components like reflectors or diffusers, electrical components, and a housing or structure. There are many types of luminaires including suspended ceiling lights, wall lights, downlights, uplights, and outdoor fixtures used for floodlighting, sports lighting, streets, and security. Architectural luminaires are often chosen for their aesthetics in buildings.

LIGHTING EQUIPMENT

AND SYSTEM
LUMINAIRES
- Also called lighting fixture.
- A lighting system is defined as an
array of luminaires having a
characteristic of lighting
distribution.
- A complete lighting unit consisting
of the following components:
• one or more lamps
• optical devices to distribute
the light
• sockets to position and
protect the lamps and to
connect the lamps to a supply
of electric power
• the mechanical components
required to support or attach
the luminaire

LUMINAIRES
- Generally consist of some or
all of the following parts:
• light sources and their
respective lamp holders
or sockets
• light control components
• electrical components
• mechanical components

B. Light Control Components
1. Reflector
- is a surface for reflecting light heat or
especially the device on a luminaire having
such a surface for controlling the distribution
of light emitted by a lamp.
- a device usually of coated metal or plastic,
that is a high reflectance and is shaped
redirect the light emitted by the lamp

2. Refractors
– is a piece of transparent material as
glass or plastic, having two opposite
surfaces either or both of which are
curved used in luminaires to focus,
disperse, or collimate the emitted light.
– Light control devices that take
advantage of the change in direction
that light undergoes as it passes
through the boundary of materials of
differing optical density (index of
refraction), such as air to glass or air
to plastic.

3. Diffuser
– any of a variety of translucent
materials for filtering glare of a
light source and distributing the
light over an extended area.
– light control elements that
scatter (redirect) incident light
in many directions. This
scattering can take place in the
material such as in bulk
diffusers like white plastic, or
on the surface as in etched or
sandblasted glass.

4. Shades, Blades, Louvers and
Baffles
– is a finned or vaned device for
controlling the radiation from a light
source.
– shades and shields are opaque or
translucent materials shaped to
reduce or eliminate the direct view of
the lamp from certain directions
outside the luminaire and to control
the direction from which the light
leaves. (a), (b) & (c) louvers for linear fluorescent, (d)

producing cells, they are called
louvers. If arranged linearly, they are
called baffles. Louvers and baffles
often are made of specularly reflecting
metal, though some are coated plastic.

LUMINAIRES
C. Mechanical Components
- consist of a housing or general structure to support other
components of the luminaire, and a mounting mechanism
for the attachment of the luminaire to its support.
- if the luminaire uses a refractor or transparent cover, then
hinged frame or doors often are provided to hold the lens.

D. Electrical Components
- operate the lamp. The luminaire contains and supports
ballast, starter, capacitors, or emergency lighting devices.

E. Families of Light Fixtures
LIGHTING 1. Suspended Ceiling Lights – the most common type of light fixture
EQUIPMENT offering the greatest variety of designs. The light distributed can be any
method depending on the shade you choose and the length of cord to
AND SYSTEM which the bulb hangs. Although the hanging fixtures provides abundant
general light, it tends to flatten shadows and look obtrusive when used
as the sole light source.

1. Suspended Ceiling Lights
a. Chandelier – a decorative lighting usually having
branched supports for several lamps.
b. Droplight – a lighting fixture suspended by a flexible
cord by which it can be raised or lowered.
c. Pendant – like a droplight, but is fixed and is
suspended by a cord, wire or chains.

light fixture that diffuses light into
the room, usually through a
translucent lighting.
Sconce – a decorative wall
bracket for candles or other
lights.

3. Wall Washers – used to bathe
a wall in an even stream of light
usually ceiling mounted,
recessed into the ceiling or
mounted on a lighting track.
These lights are wholly
directional, using a reflector or a
baffle to distribute the light at a
certain angle.

5. Downlights – provides
directional light in a downward
stream. A downlight is normally
recessed or semi-recessed into the
ceiling, and when fully recessed is
one of the most visually
inconspicuous and attractive
luminaires.

6. Uplights – this type of
fixture sends light upward.
Freestanding uplights are
important for accenting
interiors. In vogue nowadays,
uplights have been the
subject considerable design
innovation. It can be fitted
with a dimmer and some
types are switched on with a
foot pedal.

7. Spotlights – ceiling-, wall- or floor-
mounted or attached to a track, this is
a flexible, adjustable luminaire that
directs light a controlled beam. It is a
most effective tool for accent lighting,
and the track, originally developed for
commercial use, is a useful
accessory for creative design.

provide task lighting, it gives a
concentrated directional light to a
specific area. The best kind of
desk light has an adjustable arm

where you want. Desk lamps
have been the focus of much
design innovation. A desk light is
valuable in the kitchen and
makes a versatile bedside light.

flexible tape with exposed
low-voltage light sources. It is
generally a fluorescent fixture,

tungsten or neon. Basically,
used under overhead
counters, and inside cabinets
or closets but is also now
used as decorative lighting in
interiors.

- Generally employed in building spaces
such as lobbies, corridors.
