Experiment 3. Metals and Some Aspects of Corrosion

The document discusses corrosion, defining it as a metal transforming into a more stable oxide through natural processes. It also differentiates between anodic and cathodic reactions and lists conditions for corrosion to occur. Finally, it provides three reasons why corrosion testing is conducted: to identify mechanisms, define material resistance, and estimate service life and prevention methods.

Prelab Assignment 3. Metals and Some Aspects of Corrosion

1. Define corrosion.
- A refined metal is transformed into a more chemically stable oxide by the natural process of
corrosion.
2. Differentiate anodic reaction from cathodic reaction.
- The initial one is anodic reaction, in which a metal is oxidized and receives electrons. The second
reaction removes electrons from the metal through the reduction of a solution species, usually O 2
or H +.
3. What are the conditions for a corrosion to occur?
- Corrosion that attacks a metal structure's entire surface is known as general attack corrosion.
Chemical or electrochemical reactions are to blame. While general attack corrosion is a known and
foreseeable problem, it can nonetheless lead to a metal failing.
4. Give 3 reasons why corrosion test is conducted.
- Testing for corrosion is done for a variety of reasons, including: Identifying the mechanisms of
corrosion. defining corrosion resistance in materials and figuring out how to create new alloys with
corrosion resistance. estimating the equipment's service life. creating corrosion prevention
methods.
