As part of my BBA program, I have completed my industrial tour in Pacific Jeans Ltd.
During my industrial tour, I have gained valuable and practical knowledge. So based
on my learning experience, I have completed my industrial tour report.

However, in very first part, the Introduction, Objective, Scope, Methodology and
Limitations of the report are described.

The second part represents the overall company profile. It contains Overview of the

1.1 Introduction
Bangladesh-a small country, is growing bigger day by day. Today our economy is
growing at a consistent rate which makes us one of the faster growing economies in
the world. Considering the economic development of our country, it can easily be said
that garments industry plays an important role from very beginning. Today readymade
garments industry has not only increased foreign currency but also engaged a lot of
unemployed people in productive industry. 76% of Bangladesh’s total income is
earned from RMG.

Pacific Jeans Ltd.: A trusted name in jeans mechanism industry, is positioned to play
an important role in our economics for sustainable development, Pacific Jeans Ltd. is
famous for their world class casual wear manufacturing company and also known for
its state of the art of production facility, extensive and unique research and
development. They started their journey at Patharghata, Fisherighat with the name
'NZN fashion' in Chittagong city. This is the largest among locally invested journey in
1984 company. Moreover, it is the second largest among all the companies of
garments industry in Bangladesh. At starting, only 500 workers were employed at
there .But now 30 thousand people are employed directly in Pacific Jeans Ltd. To get
high productivity and consistent quality Pacific Jeans Ltd. is equipped with
technologically advanced machines, dryers and ozone machines. Due to health and
environmental issue, the company has stopped sandblasting. Pacific has set up its own
PD team dubbed ‘Pacific Jeans Ltd. innovation center’ which work in close
collaboration with the leading fashion designer of premium denim brands from US, EU
and Japan to cope up with value added innovation.
As a student of business studies, I felt great interest and attempted a visit to a
garment like Pacific Jeans Ltd. To take knowledge about RMG. Although it is very
difficult to find out the real and contemporary situation in any industry, as the
activities are more complex and wider. We dared to gather concept and idea about
situational areas in Pacific Jeans Ltd.

1.2Objective of the Study

This study aims at providing me invaluable partial knowledge about Pacific Jeans Ltd.It
will help me to develop my knowledge about RMG industry and it operation. This
report focuses on the following objectives:

i.To explore about the profile of Pacific Jeans Ltd.


ii.To gather knowledge about company quality police.
iii.To have an idea about their production performance.
iv. To know about performance evaluation system of labors and
employees.
v. To find out problem of Pacific Jeans Ltd.

1.3 Scope

The scope of the study plays a significant role for a student and in that case scope my
scope was vast. Due to some organizational rules and restrictions, in some case the
scope of learning was limited.

1.4Research Methods
A lot of material and information were required for the preparation of this industrial
tour report. The methodology followed for the purpose of the study has been desk
research as well as field survey. Information and data for the report has been
collected from both primary and secondary source. Details are giving below:

Primary data:

Relevant data for this report have been collected through direct visit
and discussion with concerned personnel. The main sources of primary
data are:

I. observation Desk to desk practical experience.


II. Personal interview of the general manager, production manager
and
III. HR manager.

Secondary data has been collected from following source:

I. Company profile.
II. Company information from official website.
III. Newspaper and journal.
IV. Pervious report.

In this report I have followed the guideline provided by my honorable teacher.

Data processing:

Finally, the collected raw data are classified, interpreted and presented with the help
of some computer software like Microsoft word and Microsoft excel. Microsoft excel
has been used to present some data graphically.
1.5Limitations

The study has been conducted subject to certain constrains which may limit the area
covered in the study. These are:

I. We have been allowed only one day for industrial tour which is not
sufficient to study the industry in depth.
II. For the company strategy, the authority is not providing confidential
financial and marketing data. In the view of the business strategic
division the company has been found to be hesitant in furnishing
relevant data.
III. The rate of success of my study may be limited as I might have failed
to collect information due to lack of my experience.
IV. There were lacks of adequate information due to not resourceful
web material.
V. Our personal limitations as very first in this type of study and report
making.

I, therefore, hope that this report will be evaluated with an approach subject to their
cognition of the abovementioned shortcomings.

2.1 An Overview of Pacific Jeans Ltd.


Pacific Jeans Ltd. is a 100% export-oriented garments manufacturing company .It has
started its commercial production in 1994.It is famous for its art production facility
and unique R&D facility. It is a private limited company having 100% local investment.
It is situated in Chittagong export processing zone known as CEPZ Bangladesh.
Md.Nasir Uddin is the Managing Director of the company .Now Pacific Jeans Ltd. is
capable of producing several kinds of jeans items from the middle to premium quality.
About 60 skilled foreigners are working in Innovation Center in Pacific Jeans Ltd. They
are producing renowned brand jeans all over the world. From a small garment factory
established in 1984, Pacific Jeans Ltd. has now been transformed into a supreme
institution for premium jeans. Exporting products to the US and around 20 countries
in Europe in the last decade, Pacific Jeans Ltd. has also focused on unconventional
markets in Asia like China, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore .Pacific Jeans Ltd.
has eight production units employing around 27, 000 people. Its now produces 40
million pieces of jeans a year, exporting to more than 30 countries. The group has an
annual export turnover of $360 million .They not only produce jeans they also work
for environment and CSR .Due to environmental and health issues, the company has
stopped sandblasting .Pacific Jeans Ltd. recycles toxic water everyday. They also do
social work like Free Eye Campaign Donation for poor patients of Chittagong medical
college hospital. Financial help to Freedom Fighters in Independence Day Celebration
time .Pacific Jeans Ltd. is one of the leading RMG industry in all over the world. To
become more energy-efficient, it has heavily invested in high-tech machines, highly
reflective floorings and light source.

2.11 Management Practices of Pacific Jeans Ltd

The key point of management practices of Pacific Jeans Ltd. are discussed below:

Mission:

The mission is to maintain code of conduct or maintain labor law (2006) on time
shipment and to maintain quality products. In our visiting organization, the main
mission or purpose of Pacific Jeans Ltd. is to create or increase profit as a product-
oriented company.

Goals and objective:

Objective or goal are defined as the important end toward which organizational and
individual activities are directed. Objective state end result clear and verifiable
objectives facilitate measurement of the surplus as well as the effectiveness and
efficiency of managerial action. Pacific Jeans Ltd. considers the increase of production,
quality of product, and market share and achieving target as organizational goals and
objective.

Policies on procedures:

Polices are general statements or understandings which guides managers thinking in


decision making. They ensure that decision falls under certain boundaries. Pacific
Jeans Ltd. has the established rules, polices, procedure, and strategies but they could
not provide for their business secrecy.

Planning Process:

Planning involves selecting mission and objective and the action to achieve them, its
require decision making. Pacific Jeans Ltd. also has a strong plan process in which the
authority has to formulate these plans. Most of time top level management make
decision.
MBO:

Management by objective is a comprehensive managerial system that integrate many


key managerial activities in a systematic manner and that is consciously directed
toward the effective and efficient achievement organizational and individual objective.

But Pacific Jeans Ltd. does not encourage management by objective as a base of
decision making.

Specializations and Departmentalization:

This company follows work specialization for every employee. Work specialization
refers to every employee should be specialized in the particular field .Pacific Jeans Ltd.
does not follow generalization. The company generally follows the product
departmentalization.

Span of Control:

The number of subordinates a manager effectively and efficiently directs. Wide span
are more efficient in team of cost. However, at some point wide span reduce
effectiveness. that is, when the span becomes too large, employee performance
suffers because supervisors no longer have the times to provide the necessary
leadership and support.

Narrow span has three major drawbacks:

i. They are expensive because they add level of management.


ii. They make vertical communication in the organization more
complex.
iii. Narrow span of control encourages overly tight supervisor and
discourage employee autonomy.

Pacific Jeans Ltd. follows narrow span of control and manage effectively.

Decision Making:
Decision making is defined as selection of course action from among alternative ;it is
at the core of planning. Decision making may be either centralized or decentralized.
The decision making process of the company is centralized by the authority. The
group's management takes good care of their workforce by allowing them to
participate in decision-making, so that they develop a sense of belongingness.

Companies are giving more emphasis in monitoring and reporting continuously on

3.1 Production Performance of Pacific Jeans Ltd.


Pacific Jeans Ltd. has a separate production department and the production
department are responsible for:
I. Taking care of product quality.
II. Facing buyer’s inspection.
III. Managing the machine lay out plan of the production floor.
IV. Arrangement of production according to delivery schedule.
V. Preparation of the production planning in advance and
coordinate with the marketing team to avoid any late
delivery.
VI. Taking care of the safety issues like product safety, workers
safety and safety of the industry.

Pacific Jeans Ltd. has eight production units employing around 27,000 people. It
produces 40 million pieces of jeans a year, exporting to more than 30 countries. The
group has an annual export turnover of $360 million. The factories of Pacific Jeans Ltd.
Group are producing about 1,25,000 pieces of jeans pant every day. They are
producing renowned brand jeans all over the world. To ensure product quality extra
incentives are given to workers to ensure product quality regarding production
processes. To keep the continuity of our company’s growth, they are emphasizing on
information technology through business process automation. Now they are capable
of producing several kinds of jeans items from the middle to premium quality.

3.4 Manufacturing Process
On receiving the orders from its customers, Pacific Jeans Ltd. manufactures the
products and supply them to the customers’ destination as per their requirements.
Since the export of the company is deemed export, it supplies the products to the
local destinations.

Their manufacturing process are given below:

3.5 Marketing Department


Pacific Jeans Ltd. Attaches much importance to its marketing task for which the
Managing Director himself takes personal interest. The marketing department is
responsible for sales, distribution, market research and handling marketing of
individual product. The total manpower engaged in the marketing department is only
20-40 persons.

3.6 Product and Market


Pacific Jeans Ltd. is a 100% export-oriented textile industry. Pacific Jeans Ltd. sells its
products through Back to Back L/Cs to the local garments manufacturers and
exporters who consume the denim fabrics as raw materials of their goods. The
garment manufacturers then export their goods to the overseas markets.

Therefore, the final destination of the company’s products appears to be the overseas
market. Pacific Jeans Ltd. ultimately produces denim fabrics for such world-renowned
brand name as George, Polo, Next, Tesco, Mexx, Tommy, Lee Hang Fat, Gemo, Aldi,
Kik, Adams, Woolworth, Gulden Pfennig.

3.7 Target Market


In Pacific Jeans Ltd., their target market is especially for foreign market. They are
marketing their product to USA, European Countries, Canada, Brazil, Germany,
Netherland etc .Pacific Jeans Ltd. has also focused on unconventional markets in Asia
like China, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore .There is scope for value addition
in these markets. They are also trying to enter Brazil, Argentina, South Africa and
Russia.

Chapter -4

4.1 Human Resource Management of Pacific Jeans Ltd.


There are about 3 Human Resource Managers in Pacific Jeans Ltd. The basic organ of
the HR department is as follow:

Roles of HR department:

I. Maintaining liaison with administrative manager.


II. Grievances handling of the worker.
III. Undertaking training program for skill development.
IV. Counseling the right and responsibility among the worker.
V. Conducting motivational program.
VI. Taking care of in-house cleanliness, health and safety.
VII. Handling ethical issues and setting code of conduct etc.
VIII. Training every worker to develop their confidence regarding
decision making. 

Talent and creative team are essential for continuous success. Each member of this
organization devoted themselves to achieve a particular goal. It’s all about a team
work for excellence. The smart working environment what we deliver to grow their
qualification, experience and intellectual development is exceptional. Thus, Pacific
Jeans Ltd. has become a hub of country’s best talent, intelligent and creative young
people

4.2 Employee Requirement and Selection

In most of the organizations, the human resources are properly viewed as their most
important assets. For employee requirement and selections, the companyconsider
following factor:
They always give priority to skilled, energetic candidate.

Requirement process: The various types of recruitment process are as follows:

Pacific Jeans Ltd. follow the internal source and advertisement in daily newspaper for
requirement process.

Selection process: after requirement process there require selection process .There
are various type of selection process and this are:

I. Written test (subjective type)

V. Others

Pacific Jeans Ltd. usually follows the written test, oral test. This selection procedure
can vary person to person. Such that:

III. For junior manager
IV. For senior manager.

4.3 Job Responsibility

The job responsibilities of HR in Pacific Jeans Ltd. are given below:

Recruitment & Selection policy & Procedure.

II. Conduct background check, reference check and verify identity before
confirming employment of candidate.

III. Coordinate with new employee's probation period and confirmation


formalities

IV. To maintain management guidelines in preparing, updating, and


recommending human resource policies and procedures.

V. Handle employee attendance, leave management and keep & update


employee's files.

VI. To maintain the employee's Personal file with all related papers as up-dated.

VII. Manage the security personnel and goods movement and follow up the
cleanliness and security system of the Company.

VIII. Ensure the hygienic atmosphere in the workplace.

IX. Any other task assigned by the management.

4.4 code of conduct of pacific jeans Ltd

Pacific jeans Ltd has code of conduct ,and these are following :
1. Pacific Jeans Ltd. abides by the principles that decisions on hiring, salary, benefits,
advancement, termination or retirement are based solely on the availability ofand
individual to do the jobs.

2. Forced labor: Pacific Jeans Ltd. does not use force labor in any from Prison,
indentured, bonded or otherwise.

3. Child labor: Pacific Jeans Ltd. does not employ any person below the age 18.

4. Compensation: Pacific Jeans Ltd. Provides each employee at least minimum wage
or higher and provided each employee a clear, written accounting for every pay
period.

5. Benefits: Pacific Jeans Ltd. provides each employee all legally mandated benefits.
These include meal subsidies, transportation or transportation subsidies. Others cash
allowances, health care, pregnancy or sick leave, vacation, religious holiday, leave and
contributions for provident fund.

6. Hours of Work/overtime: Pacific Jeans Ltd. complies with legally mandated work
hours uses overtime only when each employee fully compensated according to local
law and on a regularly 34.27 scheduled basis provides one day off in seven and
requires no more than 60 hours of work per week.

7. Management of Environment, Safety and Health: Pacific Jeans Ltd. has written
health safety guidelines, has a factory safety committee provides personal protective
equipment free of charge and mandates its use and complies with all applicable local
environmental, safety & health regulations.

8. Every employee shall be treated with respect and dignity. No employee shall be
subject to any physical, sexual, psychosocial or verbal harassments or abuse. Written
disciplinary procedures shall be applied fairly among all workers.

4.5 Salary & Compensation of Pacific Jeans Ltd.


Employee compensation in Pacific Jeans Ltd. refers to all form of pay or rewards going
to employee and arising from their employment and it has two main components one
is direct financial payment and others is indirect financial payment to employees on
increments of time and of performance. Time based payment is still more popular.
Line level workers and staff get hourly or daily basis payment and to calculate the daily
wage rate they introduced first punch card system for top level and lower level
management. They use computerized payroll which name is “KORMEE” for accurate
calculation of the wages and salary of the employees. Pacific Jeans Ltd. also increases
employee compensation on the basis of annual performance in job. At the same time
if any employee works 22 days without any break then he/she earn 1 day leave from
the company and for that one day’s salary is added to his salary.

 Wage & benefit of Pacific Jeans Ltd.


The current monthly minimum wages are equivalent of USD 48 and ensure minimum
wages for other grade workers as per BEPZA regulations.

Wages & salary breakdown is, 60% Basic and 40% allowances.

Any work after 8 hours will be treated as overtime. Mentionable here that maximum
total working hours a day are 10 hours and per week 60 hours.

A worker will get double payment the basic for working overtime more than 8 hours

Bonus: The bonus can be paid in different ways. It can be fixed percentage on the
basic wage paid annually or in proportion to the profitability.

Festival bonus: Two festival bonuses paid to every employee in a year. Equivalent to
two basics of wages/salary during two Edit festive.

Medical services: Provided free Medical facilities. To face any emergency company
provides free ambulance services, TB treatment provided at no cost in certain
circumstances from BEPZA hospital.

5.1 Problems and Challenges faced by Pacific Jeans Ltd.

Every industry has some problem. So Pacific Jeans Ltd. has some problems toowhich
are mentioned in brief below:

I. The company does not have adequate promotional programs for it


products.
II. There is no child care for female workers.
III. The company is following BEPZA instruction for fixing wages. More
importantly this minimum wages grades were published by BEPZA
which is not consistent with the living standard.
IV. There is no provident fund for employees and workers.
V. It does not provide educational facility for workers.
VI. Competitiveness among export oriented industries.
VII. Retention problem of skilled employees.

5.2 Recommendations
There are some recommendations or suggestions, which are listed below:

I. Pacific Jeans Ltd. needs to offer extra facilities for their workers
comparing with its competitors.
II. Pacific Jeans Ltd. should set standard target and pay for fulfill this
target. It may reduce overtime period. 
III. The company can develop advertising promotion.
IV. Pacific Jeans Ltd. should provide recreational program like cultural
program, picnic etc. and comfortable transport facilities.
V. Pacific Jeans Ltd. should provide good ventilation / cooling system
at the workplace.
VI. The salary system should be well structured according to the job
responsibility.
VII. Pacific Jeans Ltd. should support to arrange some training programs
to improve the efficiency of the workers and employees.
5.3 Conclusion

At least I can say that the management portion of all departments of Pacific Jeans Ltd.
is performing its job efficiently. In fact the all the departments are most important
equally to increase the productivity by ensuring low cost and to maintain the well
reputation. Besides the executives are very industrious and serious in performing their
job. The executives hardly try to achieve 90% efficiency.

The organization maintain high quality work environment in accordance with the
Labor Act of Bangladesh. Workers get adequate wages and they get wage timely. So
the workers are satisfied and there is no industrial dispute and labor unrest.

Pacific Jeans Ltd. makes 36 million pcs jeans every year. With continuous focus on
quality improvement and value addition, commitment towards maintaining safe and
healthy workplace and facilitating a unique innovation center & design lab, the group
has become one of the most preferred supply chain partners of the leading global
fashion retailers.

There is no doubt that Pacific Jeans Ltd. has created a good reputation in the market
by its quality product and service. It should maintain the quality and try to diverse its
business.
