Conclusion

The experiment measured the density of pre-1982 and post-1982 pennies to determine their composition. It found that pre-1982 pennies had a density of 9.00g/cm^3, indicating they were made of copper, while post-1982 pennies had a lower density of 7.00g/cm^3, showing they were made of zinc. A graph of the results supported this conclusion. The objectives of identifying the metals used in both types of pennies was achieved through measuring their densities.

Conclusion

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate pre- and post- 1982
pennies in order to figure out the material from which the post-1982 pennies were
made. The data corroborated that the pre-1982 pennies had a density of
9.00g/cm^3 and the pos t-1982 pennies had a density of 7.00g/cm^3. Therefore,
the pre-1982 pennies were made mostly of Copper and the post-1982 pennies were
made mostly of Zinc.

When the data was plotted on the graph, it showed that both the pre- and
post- 1982 pennies were directly proportional. The slope of the pre-1982 pennies
was 9.00g/cm^3 and the slope of the post-1982 pennies was 7.00g/cm^3. These
slopes corroborate Copper as the main metal for the pre-1982 pennies and Zinc as
the main metal for post-1982 pennies.

The objective of determining the density of the pre-1982 pennies was

achieved. Also, the objective to identify the metal used inside the post-1982
pennies was met. This metal was identified as Zinc. Each metal has its own density
which facilitated the discovery process.

The experiment was performed using an electronic balance which could

have had faulty information or faulty data measurements. It is posible that the
marking on the graduated cylinder that was used were not accurate. The
temperature of the water could have also affected the measurements of the volume.

This lab report was limited to investigating the densities of pre-1982 and
post-1982 pennies. The most evident finding was that Zinc was the metal used for
the core of the post-1982 pennies. The experiment could be expanded to find the
metal compositions of other coins such as quarters, nickels, and dimes or coins
from other countries.
