ELECTRICAL MACHINES – III
(Electrical and Electronics Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70
Note: 1. Question Paper consists of two parts (Part-A and Part-B)
2. Answering the question in Part-A is compulsory
3. Answer any THREE Questions from Part-B
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PART –A
1 a) List different types of single-phase induction motors. [3M]
b) Define and explain Pitch and Winding factors. [4M]
c) What is synchronous reactance and synchronous impedance? [4M]
d) What is the need for parallel operation of synchronous generators? [4M]
e) What are various applications of synchronous motors? [3M]
f) What is a synchronous induction motor? [4M]
PART -B
2 a) Calculate the speed of a 4-pole, capacitor start single-phase induction motor if [4M]
the slip at full load is 3.4 percent. The line frequency is 60Hz.
b) Draw and discuss the constructional details of a capacitor start single-phase [8M]
induction motor.
c) Discuss the various applications of single-phase motors. [4M]
3 a) Write and explain the EMF equation of a synchronous generator. [3M]
b) A three-phase synchronous generator produces an open circuit line voltage of [8M]
6928V when the dc exciting current is 50A. The ac terminals are then short-
circuited, and the three line currents are found to be 800A.
i) Calculate the synchronous reactance per phase
ii) Calculate the terminal voltage if three 12 Ω resistors are connected
in wye across the terminals.
c) Compare between non–salient and salient pole type synchronous generators. [5M]
4 a) Define voltage regulation and explain its significance. [4M]
b) Explain the determination of voltage regulation of alternator by synchronous [12M]
impedance method.
5 a) Explain the general procedure for paralleling of alternators. Also mention the [6M]
advantages of parallel operating alternators.
b) Two alternators running in parallel supply lighting load of 2500 KW and a [10M]
motor load of 5000 KW at 0.707 P.F. one machine is loaded to 4000 KW at a
P.F. of 0.8 lagging. What is the KW output and P.F. of the other machine?
