al Tanner lives an ordinary life. He has got a nice flat
Hen a good job at a natural history museum in San
Diego, California.
At the weekend he does his chores around the house.
Later he goes to his mother and father's house and helps
them with their chores. Sometimes he plays basketball
with his friends. Then he meets his cousin David for a cup
of coffee in the afternoon.
During the week Hal gets up every morning and does
the same thing. He makes his bed. He puts on his museum
uniform. Then he reads the newspaper at the kitchen table,
and he eats toast and cereal with milk. After breakfast he
washes up, brushes his teeth and rides his bike to work. He
walks into the museum, and he doesn’t have to Look at the
clock, because he knows that it is eight o'clock. He gets to
work at the same time every day.
In the evening Hal Leaves the museum, and he rides his
bike to the supermarket. Usually he looks for something
easy to cook. Then he goes back home. After dinner
he reads, or he watches TV. Sometimes he works at his
computer until he gets tired. Then he goes to bed and falls
asleep. Hal knows that tomorrow will be just the same as
today.
The Natural History Museum has got a lot of rooms
with all kinds of exhibits. There are dinosaur bones and
skeletons of extinct animals. There are models of planets,
asteroids and stars. In one room a film shows trees
changing in the autumn, winter, spring and summer. In
the next room there is a film about earthquakes. There are

they work and play. Many of these exhibits look real, and

Hal’s job is to make sure that every visitor follows the
rules, and that no one touches the exhibits. Sometimes he
helps Lost children find their parents. At times visitors want
to know something more about an exhibit. Hal is happy to
find a museum expert who can answer their questions.
Hal always tells his family and his friends that he is
happy with his life. He is happy to work where people
learn more about natural history. But he really thinks that
every day is the same, and he’s a little bored. Sometimes at
night he falls asleep and dreams that he’s got a much more
exciting job. He’s an explorer, a scientist or an astronaut.
Then he wakes up in the morning and he’s just Hal.Tim Hawkins is a popular film actor. He acts in all kinds
of films, but most people like his adventure films. In one
film he rescues a family in a hurricane. In another film he
climbs a tall building and rescues some children. In his
most popular film he’s an astronaut who is lost in space.

his bike to the museum. The day was the same as any
other day. But when Hal got to work, there were big trucks
in front of the museum. A film crew was taking lights and
cameras off the trucks. A policeman was in the middle of
the road. He was waving traffic away from the building.
Hal was surprised. He walked inside, and he saw Lots
of film people. Some people were talking on their mobile
phones in Loud voices. One woman was working on the
lights on the balcony. A man was painting a wall red.
Another woman was moving a camera. Two actors were
preparing their roles.
Hal's boss came up to talk to him. He told Hal that he
had to control the crowded room of curious people. Hal
smiled. For the first time his job was going to be different.
Hal watched the crew make the film. The crowd cheered
when the famous actor Tim Hawkins came in. Hal was
surprised to see him: Tim looked just like Hal! Hal liked
the film where Tim was an astronaut Lost in space. In this
film Tim had to rescue a young boy who was climbing up
on a model of a volcano. They had to film it Lots of times.
In the end Hal could say Tim’s lines before Tim could say
them!
At Lunchtime Hal went to the canteen. Hal was having
a cheese sandwich, a bowl of soup and some crisps. He
wanted to finish lunch so he could watch the filming
again. Just then Tim Hawkins walked into the canteen.
Suddenly Tim saw Hal and stared at him. This was so
strange. It was like looking in a mirror.
‘Who are you?’ Tim asked him. ‘You Look like me!”
‘No, you Look like me,’ Hal said. ‘I’m Hal Tanner!”
‘Are you an actor?’ Tim asked. Tim was worried that Hal
was going to work on the film, too.‘Nol’ Hal said. ‘I work here at the museum.
Both of them laughed. ‘I've got a good idea, Hal Tanner,’
Tim said quietly. ‘Let’s change places for two or three
hours.’
‘How do we change places?’ Hal asked him. ‘You're
famous, and I’m not an actor.’
‘Idon’t know how to work in a natural history museum!”
Tim said. He Laughed. ‘And I don’t like being famous!’
Hal wasn’t sure. ‘I don’t know if this is a good idea,’ he.
said.
‘Come on,’ said Tim. ‘It’Ll be fun. Let’s change clothes.’
Hal thought about it, and then he smiled. ‘OK,’ Hal said.
‘But just for two hours.’
They went to Hal's office, and they changed into each
other's clothes.

N Hal watched Tim's feet, and then he tried to walk
like him. ‘You have to walk like you are a famous film
actor,’ Tim said. ‘People like that. They smile when they
recognize you.’
Tim brushed his hair like Hal. Hal looked at him. ‘You
look like Hal Tanner and you are not a film actor,’ Hal said.
‘You work at this museum and your job is to help visitors.’
‘I don’t want your boss to be angry with me!’ Tim said.
He Laughed.
‘No,’ Hal said. ‘If he’s angry with you, then he’s really
angry with Hal. That’s me!’
Tim and Hal stared at each other. They were surprised
by how much they Looked alike.
Tim showed the script to Hal. ‘Here’s what you have to
do next in the film,’ Tim said. ‘Just say those words and
smile like Ido.’
Hal tried to smile like Tim. ‘You look just like Tim
Hawkins!’ Tim said.
Just then Hal’s boss came into the office. He Looked at
the clock and then he Looked at Tim. ‘It’s time to get back
to work, Hal,’ he said.
When Hal's boss Left, Hal and Tim looked at each other
and laughed. ‘This is going to be easy!’ Tim said. ‘Who is
Hal and who is Tim? Nobody knows.’
‘Our mothers couldn't say, I’m sure!’ Hal laughed.
Hal played Tim’s role in the next scene. He was wearing
Tim’s clothes. Everyone was looking at him. At first he felt
nervous. Soon he was having fun. He liked being an actor.‘You're wonderful’ the crew told him. When they said
that, he smiled like Tim Hawkins.
They filmed the scene again. Hal talked to the director.
‘There isn’t enough danger. Can we have more danger in
this scene?’
‘What kind of danger, Tim?’ the director asked him. ‘Do
you want people to chase you? Do you want a storm?’
‘A storm,’ Hal said. He was thinking about this. ‘A storm
is good, but how about some fireworks coming from
the volcano.’ He said it like Tim Hawkins. ‘I want Lots of
danger when I rescue the boy.’

At the same time, Tim was Hal. He asked the visitors
to be quiet and not make a noise during the filming. He
made sure that people didn’t use cameras or camcorders.
He asked them not to touch the exhibits or the film crew's
things. No one Looked at Tim and thought he was the actor
Tim Hawkins. He could relax.
Hal’s boss came to speak to Tim. ‘Hal, can you go to the
astronomy exhibit for an hour, please?”
The astronomy exhibit was quiet. Tim looked at the
different models of planets and stars. He watched a
documentary film about satellites in space.
Later he walked into another big room where there was
one exhibit about fish and another exhibit about oceans.
He Learnt about wind, rain and weather balloons.
‘Td like to have Hal Tanner's job,’ thought Tim. ‘I'd like to
learn about science and the Earth. I'd like to find out about
animals in the desert and in the rainforest, and I want to
know how fish live in the sea.’
In another room Tim watched a film about an ice storm.
Two girls were watching the film, too. One girl asked Tim,
‘When is there ice, and when is there snow?’
‘T don’t know,’ Tim said, ‘but I'll find someone to tell
you.’ Usually girls giggle when they see Tim. But these
girls thought he was a worker in the museum.
He went to look for someone to help them.
A few hours Later Hal and Tim met again in Hal's office.
They were going to change into their own clothes again.
‘Today was a wonderful day!’ Tim said. ‘Changing places
with you was the best fun I’ve had in a Long time!’
‘Was it?’ Hal asked. He laughed when he saw that Tim
was telling the truth.‘Yes,’ Tim said. ‘Did you know that the ocean makes up
72% of the Earth? Do you know how many animals will be
extinct if we don’t do something to help them?’
Hal liked his job, but he thought it was too ordinary. He
couldn’t imagine that Tim was happy being Hal Tanner.

things. People will think that you’re Tim Hawkins.

might lose my job’
‘No one will catch us,’ Tim said. ‘Let’s do it for one more

They exchanged keys, wallets and mobile phones. They
agreed to meet at an old building near Hal's flat at six
o'clock the next evening.
‘Call me on your mobile phone if you're going to be
late,’ Tim said.
‘OK,’ Hal said.
Changing places was easy for Tim; at Least the idea was
easy. He played a Lot of different roles in films. In one film
he played an astronaut, and in another he was a famous
journalist in danger. In another film he played a doctor
who found the cure for a strange sleeping illness.
Now Tim was going to play a different kind of role. He
was going to be Hal Tanner.
Hal was good-looking, like Tim. But he was not a
scientist or a brave explorer. He might be a journalist, but
not the kind of journalist who was in danger.
Tim thought about Hal's life. Hal was an ordinary man
who lived an ordinary life. He had a nice flat, a good job
and a mother and father who loved him. Sometimes he
met his old friends from school to play basketball, or he
met his cousin David to have a cup of coffee. Tim realized
that being Hal Tanner was going to be a very difficult role
for him to play. This time the audience was not going to
be in a cinema. They were going to be people who knew
the real Hal Tanner.
Hal drove out of town and past the roundabout. Then

Tim's house. It was a big house near a lake, and it had lots

It was strange to go into someone else’s house. There
were so many rooms. Upstairs there was a balcony with
a beautiful view of the lake. He could hear violin music
playing in the house. ‘This is wonderful!’ he said.
‘Tim? Is that you?’ a man called. Hal didn’t know what
to do. ‘Tim?’ The man called again. Hal knew it was Phillip,
Tim's secretary. ‘Come into the office. I want to show you
something.’
‘OK,’ Hal said. He went into the next room.
Phillip was working at a computer. He showed Hal the
new website that was all about Tim. ‘This looks great,’ Hal
said. ‘You’ve done a very good job.’ He was thinking, ‘No
one will ever create a Hal Tanner website.’Later Hal went to the TV studio to be on the talk show.
When the audience saw him, they cheered. Hal smiled
and waved to them. He felt like he was a film star!
The next day Tim was at the museum. He was doing Hal’s
job very well, and he was happy. When a girl’s hat fell
into the rainforest exhibit, Tim ran over.
“Don’t panic!’ he shouted. ‘T’ll get your hat!’
Tim climbed into the exhibit and got it back for her.
David, Hal’s cousin, was at the museum and saw Tim get
the hat. Usually Hal was shy, and David couldn't believe
that his cousin was being so Loud!
Tim and David had a sandwich and a cup of coffee in
the museum canteen. David was having a birthday Lunch
party for his mother, Hal's Aunt Sophie, the next day. Last
week Hal told his cousin that he could help buy food and
prepare for the Lunch.
‘So are you going to help me prepare for Mum's parti,
Hal?’ David asked him.
‘Oh, the party! Oh yes, I forgot. Look, I’m really sorry
David, but I’m busy this evening,’ said Tim. ‘I won’t have
time.
‘That isn’t like you,’ said David in an unsure voice.
‘I’m sorry, David,’ Tim said.
‘Don’t worry,’ Hal’s cousin said. ‘My niece will go
shopping with me. And I'LL ask my sister to help make the
lunch’
Tim knew that he had to play the role of Hal Tanner
much better.
‘Well, maybe I can tell my friend that I can’t see him

CHapter 4 Tim gets into trouble
eing a film actor helped Tim with Hal’s job. When
Tim was filming, he sometimes did dangerous things.
Later that day the lift at the museum broke. It was stuck
between floors, and three people were inside. It was very
dangerous, but Tim ran to the scene and rescued them.
All of the museum visitors and museum workers cheered.
They didn’t know that it wasn’t Hal Tanner.
Hal was filming in the desert. At lunchtime Hal showed
the crew how to make a queue. Some of the crew were
surprised. They had made a Lot of films with him, and this
wasn’t like Tim Hawkins. He never worried about those
things!
At the museum Tim was learning new things about
himself. Rescuing people is hard work
when it’s real. In the desert Hal
was learning about himself, too.
When he was Hal Tanner, he
was quiet. When he was
Tim Hawkins, he was
different; he was open
and friendly. Hal was
happy about that.
At six o'clock in the
evening Tim went to the
old building near Hal's
flat. This was the time
that he and Hal agreed to
meet and change places.
Hal didn’t arrive.
art ei iat Tim Looked at his watch andwaited a long time, but Hal never came.
Finally Tim went back to Hal's flat. He remembered that
Hal had his mobile phone, so he tried to call Hal. But Hal
didn’t answer.
Tim began to worry. Just then he heard someone at the
door. ‘Is it Hal?’ he thought, but it was David.
‘Are you ready, Hal? Come on, let’s go and do the
shopping for the birthday Lunch!’ said David.
‘Birthday Lunch?’ asked Tim.
‘Yes. It’s my mum’s birthday party tomorrow,’ said
David. ‘Have you forgotten?’
Tim and David went to the supermarket to shop for the
birthday Lunch. They got flowers, too. David asked Tim
lots of questions. Tim didn’t know if he could play this role
in front of Hal’s entire family! He tried to call Hal again.
There was no answer.
Just then the mobile phone rang. ‘Is this Hal?’ thought
Tim, but it was Hal's mother!
‘Lhope you did the shopping for the party,’ she said.
Tim was getting confused. ‘We did!’ he shouted.
“You don’t sound like Hal,’ Hal’s mother said.
‘Thave a cough,’ Tim said.
“Do you feel sick?’ Hal’s mother asked. ‘Do you have a
temperature?’
“Don’t worry,’ Tim said. ‘I'll feel better tomorrow.
At the same time Hal and the film crew were in the
desert. They were filming the Last scene when it started to
rain very hard. Everyone had to run to the tent.
Hal told the director and the film crew that he had to
leave. Everyone was watching the rain. No one listened

Next there’s going to be fish, chicken, green beans, carrots,
rice, potatoes and a big salad of spinach and tomatoes.
Then there's going to be coconut cake and fruit.’
‘We've got some ice cream, too!’ David said as he put it

Tim and Hal's cousins listened to the radio while they
worked. David took plates into the dining room.
Ann put the flowers on the table. Everyone was having
a good time — but not Tim. He was worried. He told Hal’s
cousins that he had to Leave, but they wouldn't listen.
‘Hal, put the fruit in that wooden bowl,’ Ann said.
‘Hal, can you give me the blender?’ Jane asked.
“We'll cut the bread tomorrow,’ Ann said. ‘Hal, can you

‘This Lunch is going to be brilliant!’ David said.

time, because the bus stopped many times. It was hard tokeep his eyes open. When he got home, he remembered
that he didn’t have his house keys. Hal had got them!
He climbed over the gate. Before he got to the ground,
the alarm rang. He knew he had to turn it off. But before
he could do that, the police arrived. Tim began to run.
‘Stop!’ the police shouted.
“Oh no! They'll know I’m Tim Hawkins. I don’t want
anyone to see me in these old clothes!’ thought Tim.
Tim ran away. Usually he ran away from ordinary
people. Now he was running away from the police! Tim
thought that changing places was fun at first. Now he
thought it was getting him into trouble!

sunny. The crew waited to film. Everyone listened to Hal when he said, ‘I must
leave!’ Tim was helping David and David’s brothers prepare the dinner, but he
wanted to leave. Finally Tim told them that he had to go home to do work on
his freezer. When he tried to get into his own house, the police came and chased

The film crew waited in the tent. They couldn’t work.
The director was talking to the crew about the scene.
He wanted Hal to look like he was in danger. At the same
time Hal was looking at his watch. It was late.
The director saw that Hal was worried. ‘Don’t worry,
Tim,’ he said. ‘The rain will stop soon. The sun will come
out, and then we can film the Last scene.”
‘Thave to leave now,’ Hal said.

‘A lunch?’ The director Laughed.
‘It’s my Aunt Sophie's birthday!’ Hal said.
‘That's very funny,’ the director said. He laughed again.
‘Tim, take your aunt out to a restaurant. You don’t need to
prepare lunch for her.’
Soon the rain stopped, and the crew wanted to start
work again.
‘Thave to tell you something,’ Hal said to the director.
‘Relax, Tim,’ the director said. ‘The sun is coming out
now, and we can film the last scene.’
“But I have to tell you something very important,’ Hal
said. ‘I'm not really Tim Hawkins.’
The director Looked at Hal and laughed. He thought this
was a joke. ‘Who are you then?’ he asked.
Hal was quiet. How could he tell him that he was Hal
Tanner? He couldn't tell him that he had an ordinary job
and lived an ordinary life. He couldn't tell him that he and
Tim Hawkins were changing places.
‘Of course you're Tim Hawkins!’ the director said.
‘Sometimes you're very funny, Tim. Why don’t you play
funny roles?’ Then he walked away.
Hal started to run away. He thought he was safe. Then
the crew saw him run, and they started to chase him. They
chased him just like the police chased Tim!
Hal had to hide behind a big rock. He was tired of being
a film star. He really wanted to go home and help his
family prepare for Aunt Sophie's birthday lunch.
Then Hal saw Tim’s jeep. When no one was looking, he
got in the jeep and drove away. He drove across the desert.

He started to drive again. He was confused. He was looking
for something he recognized, but he saw only sand.
Then the jeep stopped, and he couldn't start it again.
There was no more petrol in the car.
At that moment Tim's mobile phone rang on the seat
beside him.
Hal answered Tim’s mobile phone. ‘Hello?’
‘Where are you, Hal?’ Tim asked. Hal was happy to hear
Tim’s voice.

But please come back quickly. I want to get back to my

tomorrow, and I promised to help prepare itin the morning.
I don't think I can be Hal in front of your family.’
Just then the mobile phone went dead. Hal shouted into
the phone. ‘Tim! Tim!”
“Oh no!’ thought Hal. ‘Tomorrow is Aunt Sophie's
birthday. My cousins are preparing the birthday lunch
without my help. My mother and father will be there, and
all of my family, too. If I don’t get back in time, I hope
that Tim can do a good job as Hal Tanner!”
Hal was alone in the desert that night. His old life was
far away, and he didn’t know how to get home again. But
he wasn’t afraid. He looked at the stars and the moon. The
desert made him think of the museum and the astronomy
exhibit. It was like being in an enormous natural history
museum.
The sky was starting to get light. Hal gat out of the jeep.
He was exploring when he heard something coming across
the desert. Finally he could see that it was a truck. There
were farm workers in the truck. They were waving to him.
Hal waved, too. The farm workers recognized Hal and
cheered. They were very excited. ‘Look!’ they cried. ‘It’s
Tim Hawkins! Hello, Tim Hawkins!’
‘Hello,’ Hal said. He was very happy to see them. He
smiled at them just Like Tim Hawkins.
‘T've seen all of your films twice,’ one of them said to

Hal laughed. ‘You're very kind,’ he said.

Cuapter 6 Hal and Tim tell the truth
t was eleven o'clock on Saturday morning. It was
almost time for Aunt Sophie's birthday Lunch. Tim was
helping David, Ann and Jane. He put the bowls of fruit
and the flowers on the table. Everything looked
beautiful.
Soon a lot of people arrived. Tim was nervous, because
they were Hal's family! They talked to him, and they took
photographs with him. They told him how much they
loved him. To Tim, they were strangers.
David came to Tim. ‘Your mother and father have just
arrived, Hal,’ he said. ‘They want to see you.’
Aunt Sophie was in the dining room with Hal’s mother
and father. She told them that she was happy. Her children
and her nephew Hal were preparing a wonderful Lunch for
her. Hal's mother smiled. She was proud of her son.
Tim watched Hal’s parents from the kitchen door. Just
then Hal’s mother saw Tim. Tim quickly went back into
the kitchen.
‘I’m not really Hal Tanner!’ Tim said to David.
David didn’t believe him. ‘Yes, you are,’ he said. He
laughed and pushed Tim into the dining room.
Tim knew that he was a good actor, but playing Hal
Tanner was the most difficult role of his life.
Tim and David walked into the room, and the guests
stopped talking. Then everyone cheered for Hal and his
cousins, and for the lovely party.
‘I’m Lucky to have my children and my nephew,’ Aunt
Sophie said. ‘They have real talent. They could have their
own TV programme! They could show everyone how to
prepare a party!’ Everyone agreed.Tim smiled. Hal’s mother watched him. She was quiet.
She didn’t know who this young man was, but he was not
her son.
Suddenly everyone heard music coming from outside.
The door opened, and Hal came in with his new friends.
The farm workers were singing and playing music. Two of
them were playing guitars, one was playing the trumpet
and the others were singing.
The guests were confused, but they cheered the
musicians. Hal’s mother Looked at Hal. Then she looked at
Tim. She was very shocked.
‘Mother,’ Hal said. ‘He’s Tim Hawkins and I’m Hal’ Hal’s
mother couldn’t speak. Hal and Tim talked at the same
time. They tried to tell her about changing places.
‘Yes, Mrs Tanner,’ said Tim, ‘We changed places for one
day to see what happened.’ Tim brushed back his hair and

took off his glasses. Suddenly everyone could see that he
was Tim Hawkins, the film actor. Tim liked that.
Hal’s mother came over to Hal. She gave him a serious
look.
‘Tell me something,’ she said. ‘Why did you change
places with Tim Hawkins?’
“Usually every day is the same for me,’ said Hal. ‘I know
that every day will be just like the day before. That is Hal
Tanner's life?
‘That’s true,’ his mother said. ‘But what’s wrong with
being Hal Tanner?’
Hal told his family about his adventure. For one day
he was an actor in an action film. He was on a talk show.
A journalist asked him questions and wrote down every
word that he said.
‘When I went to a party, people stared at me,’ he said.
‘They wanted to talk to me. They told me that they liked
my films.
‘But those films aren't your films,’ his mother said.
‘I know!’ Hal said. ‘But it was a Lot of fun for one day.
When people thought that I was Tim Hawkins, I did new
things. I couldn't do those things as Hal Tanner.’
Then he told them about crossing the desert to be here
with his family for Aunt Sophie's birthday. To him that
was the most important part of his day.
‘I'm very happy to be Hal Tanner,’ he told them. ‘I don’t
want to change my Life for the world.’
Everyone had a good time at lunch. They liked the food
that Tim and Hal’s cousins prepared. Soon it was time for
Aunt Sophie's birthday cake. Hal and Tim went into the
kitchen to get it.In the past two days the two of them Learnt a lot about
each other and about themselves. They liked changing
places, but they were ready to go back to their own lives.
Hal and Tim carried the cake into the dining room. The
family sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Aunt Sophie. Tim made a
speech to Hal's family.
‘Hal's Lucky to have this family,’ Tim said to them. ‘I’m
lucky, too. I had a Lot of fun in Hal’s job, and I learnt all
about natural science. I went shopping and prepared a
meal with David and his sisters. They were like my own
cousins. Finally I've spent this wonderful day with you.
Happy Birthday, Aunt Sophie!’
Later the farm workers played a song from one of Tim’s
films. Tim sang for Aunt Sophie and the other guests. Then
Hal got up, and he and Tim sang together.
‘Hal, you were great at acting,’ said Tim. ‘But I’m sure
that I sing better than you!’ They both Laughed.
