Fundamentals of Networking Course Outline
Fundamentals of Networking Course Outline
Course Description
The course is a comprehensive program designed to teach students networking and internetworking
technology skills. It introduces networking Standards, Concepts, Topology, Media and Terminology including
LANs, WANs, the OSI model, Ethernet Cabling, IP addressing, Network hardware and various protocols.
You will gain an understanding of basic network functions, standards, and protocols, to prepare you to tackle
advanced networking skills.
Course Objectives
Describe networking standards, Concepts, Topology, and Transmission Media including:
Local Area Network (LAN)
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
OSI models
Ethernet Cabling
IP addressing
Networking Devices etc.
Explain networking theory and protocols on common network systems.
Identify and describe Network architecture, structure, functions, components, and models
Build simple LAN topologies by applying basic principles of cabling, device configuration.
Describe the devices and services that support communication across an Internetwork
Analyze the operations and feature of the Connectivity Devices, Switches and network layer protocols and
services and explain the fundamental concepts of routing.
Describe the operation of protocols at the OSI data link layer and how they support communications.
Explain the role of physical layer protocols and services in supporting communications across data
networks.
Teaching Methods
The course will be based on the following teaching and learning activities:
Lectures covering the theoretical part using PowerPoint presentations
Summary and short concept on the board
Practical Sessions using Packet Tracer
