Biology (5090/1/2/3/6) - Preamble

The Biology (5090) examination is part of the Senior Secondary - School Certificate Examination take a:
the end of Grade 12. The School Certificate Examination is designed based on the three-year course
covering Grades 10, 11 and 12. The Ministry of General Education revised the senior secondary school
curriculum (CDC 2013) and its implementation begun in 2014. For the purposes of the examination the
Biology teaching syllabus was analysed and an examinations syllabus was developed with accompanying
specimen papers.

The purpose of the Biology assessment will be to evaluate candidates' competences in terms of scientific
knowledge, skills and values about the living world, to certify, to place candidates into tertiary institutions and
to evaluate acquisition of skills useful to candidates in their daily lives. The examination will also be used for
certification of learners' achievements as well as entry into tertiary institutions and the engagement in
entrepreneurial activities.

Assessment Objectives

Candidates will be assessed against the following Objectives:

A01 Knowledge with Understanding

A02 Handling Information and Solving Problems

A03 Experimental and Investigative Skills

Test Design

The examination will be made up of 3 components and structured as follows;

Paper 3 Practical Test

Advance Information

Time 1 hour 15 minutes

Great care should be taken that any confidential information given does not
reach the candidates either directly or indirectly.

Instructions for preparing practical examination materials.

In addition to the usual equipment of a laboratory, each candidate will require the
apparatus specified overleaf. If a candidate breaks any of the apparatus, or loses any of
the materials supplied, the matter should be rectified and a note made in the report.

All specimens should carry only the letters/numbers as indicated and their identity should
NOT be revealed to the candidates.

Supervisors should ensure that all specimens have a correct identity attached to the
specimen and that these are not removed or altered during the examination.

Question 1
Each candidate should have access to an improvised ecosystem identified in the examination

room as E16.
This ecosystem should have a composition of biotic components namely small plants, insects

preferably grasshoppers, other animals such as lizards or frogs. In addition, the ecosystem
should have abiotic components such as soil and water; of course air and light should be

available as well.
Assemble the ecosystem E16 using a wire mesh or carton box which is perforated with holes

and one set-up per examination room would be adequate to cater for at least twenty

candidates as they would alternate to observe the activities in E16.

Question 2
Each candidate should be provided with one tall plant and one short plant, preferably bean
seedlings labeled as W70 and W71 respectively (these specimens will enable the candidate

answer Q2 (a) and (b»).

Each candidate should be provided with two dwarf plants labeled as C and D respectively.

(These two specimens will enable candidates answer Q2 (e).
