Graphs of Linear Equations in Two Variables

Ax+ By=C

Equations of this type are called linear equations because they generate straight line graphs when
plotted on a standard Cartesian coordinate system.

Methods to graph a linear equation in two variables

By Table of Values (Given any two points)

By Intercepts (x-and y-intercepts)

By Slope-Intercept (Slope & y-intercept)

Table of Values
The basic method of graphing an equation is by point-plotting. The idea is to plot as many points
that satisfy the equation until a clear picture of the graph is drawn.

Ex. Draw the graph of 3 x− y=1.

Soln.
Let x = -1, 0, 1

X -1 0 1
Y -4 -1 2

Use x = -1 Use x = 0 Use x = 1

3 x− y=1 3 x− y=1 3 x− y=1
3 (−1 )− y =1 3 ( 0 )− y=1 3 ( 1 )− y =1
−3− y=1 0− y=1 3− y=1
− y=1+3 − y=1 − y=1−3
− y=4 −1 (− y=1 ) − y=−2
−1 (− y=4 ) y=−1 −1 (− y=−2 )
y=−4 y=2

So the following points are (-1, -4), (0, -1) & (1, 2).

Now let’s graph the following points in the Cartesian plane.

Ex. Sketch the graph of 4 x+ y=2.
Soln.
Let x=−1 , 2 ,3

X -1 2 3
Y 6 -6 -10

Use x = -1 Use x = 2 Use x = 3

4 x+ y=2 4 x+ y=2 4 x+ y=2
4 (−1 )+ y=2 4 ( 2 )+ y=2 4 ( 3 ) + y=2
−4+ y=2 8+ y =2 12+ y=2
y=4+ 2 y=−8+2 y=−12+ 2
y=6 y=−6 y=−10

Hence, the points are (−1 , 6 ) , (2 ,−6 )∧ (3 ,−10 ) .

Now, let’s plot the points.

Intercepts
The intersection of a line and the x-axis is a point which contains the x-intercept, and the
intersection of a line and the y-axis is a point which contains the y-intercept.

(x ,0) (0 , y )
Ex. Sketch the graph of 5 x− y=10 using intercepts.
Soln.
Consider the equation 5 x− y=10

Let y=0 Let x=0

5 x− y=10 5 x− y=10
5 x−0=10 5 ( 0 )− y=10
5 x=10 0− y=10
5 x 10
= − y=10
5 5
x=2 −1 (− y=10 )
y=−10
So the x-intercept is ( 2 , 0 ) .
So the y-intercept is ( 0 ,−10 ) .
Now let’s graph the equation using the x-and y-intercept ( 2 , 0 )∧( 0 ,−10 ) .

Ex. Graph the equation 2 x−7 y=−28 , using x-and y-intercept.

Soln.
Consider the equation 2 x−7 y=−28 ,

Let y = 0 Let x = 0
2 x−7 y=−28 2 x−7 y=−28
2 x−7 ( 0 )=−28 2(0)−7 y=−28
2 x=−28 −7 y=−28
2 x −28 −7 x −28
= =
2 2 −7 −7
x=−14 x=4

So, the x-intercept is (-14, 0). So, the y-intercept is (0, 4).

Now, plot the x-and y-intercept (−14 ,0 )∧( 0 , 4 )in the Cartesian plane.

Slope-Intercept
Remember the standard form of the linear equation in two variables is defined as,
Ax+ By=C

We can write this in slope-intercept form,

y=mx+b

Where m is the slope of the line and b is the y -intercept.

Ex. Graph 2 x−3 y=12

Soln.
Change 2 x−3 y=12 to slope-intercept form.

2
y= x −4
3
2
m= ∧b=−4
3

2
Hence slope is and y-intercept is −4.
3
Now let’s graph the equation.

2
Using m= and b=−4
3

Ex. Sketch the graph of 3 x− y=−1.

Soln.
Write 3 x− y=−1 to slope-intercept form.

y=3 x +1

m=3∧b=1

So, the slope is 3 and the y-intercept is 1.

Now, let’s sketch the graph of the equation.

Using m=3∧b=1

3
m=3=
1
