Read the following letter. Answer all questions based on the letter.

Dear Sir / Madam,

I would like to apply for the job of tour leader for your Overland Africa tours. I have had lots
of useful experience for this role.

I have spent five months backpacking around Africa. In 2018, I visited Ethiopia,
Kenya and Tanzania. I used local transport and organized my own accommodation, food
and visas. I enjoyed meeting local people, learning about local traditions and visiting natural
parks. I read and learned a lot about the culture and wildlife, and I even learned some
Swahili and Afrikaans. This trip taught me to be independent and to organize travel
arrangements.

I have also worked as a leader at a children’s summer camp in the south of England.
I worked there in 2017. I led activities for children aged 9 to 12, including football, climbing
and campfire and games. For this work, I received training in climbing instruction and first
aid. During this time, I developed many useful skills. For example, I had to ensure the
children were always safe and happy. I learned how to be helpful and positive, and I also
learned ways to entertain people and help them make friends when they meet someone
new.

Finally, I have completed the Active Youth Challenge in 2016. To complete this
challenge, I firstly had to volunteer with a local organization. I helped at a social club for the
elderly, where I chatted and played games with the members. The experience taught me to
be patient and friendly. Secondly, I had to learn something by myself. I learned car
mechanics. This taught me some useful, practical skills. Thirdly, I organized a four-day
camping and hiking trip in the Scottish mountains with other students from my school. This
experience exposed me to camping equipment and how to deal with problems like bad
weather and getting lost.

I believe I have lots of useful experience to work as an Overland Tour Guide. I would love the
opportunity to tell you more about my skills at an interview.

Sincerely,

Nick Johnson

Read the passage below about chess. Answer the following questions.

Chess is called the game of kings. It has been around for a long time. People have
been playing it for over 500 years. Chess is based on an even older game from India. The
chess we play today is from Europe.

Chess is a two-player game. One player uses the white pieces meanwhile the other
uses the black pieces. Each piece moves in a special way. One piece is called the king and
each player has one. The players take turns moving their pieces. If a player lands on a
piece, he or she takes it. The game ends when a player loses his or her king. There are a
few more rules, but those are the basics.

Some people think that chess is more than a game. They think that it makes the mind
stronger. Good chess players use their brains. They take their time. They think about what
will happen next. These skills are useful in life and in chess. Chess is kind of like a workout
for the mind.

You don't always have lots of time to think when playing chess. There is a type of
chess with short time limits. It's called blitz chess. In blitz chess, each player gets ten
minutes to use for the whole game. Your clock runs during your turn. You hit the time clock
after your move. This stops your clock. It also starts the other player's clock. If you run out of
time, you lose. Games of blitz chess are fast-paced.

Chess is not just for people. Computers have been playing chess since the 1970s. At
first, they did not play well. They made mistakes. As time went on, they grew stronger. In
1997, a computer beat the best player in the world for the first time. It was a computer called
Deep Blue. Deep Blue was big. It took up a whole room. By 2006 a cell phone could beat the
best players in the world. Chess sure has come a long way. Don't you think so?

SECTION C: WRITING (10 MARKS)

Write a description about your favourite place in not more than 70 words. It could be
a city, a restaurant, a recreational destination, or any other place of relevance. You will
be evaluated based on language, content, and organization. You may use the following
words in your paragraph.

amazing memorable enjoyable wonderful

Everyone has their own favorite place. For me, we really need our own favorite
places to go. It is a place that can captivate our mind, feels comfortable , safe. A place
that can give us peace and security for a while. I also have my own favorite places.

My favorite place is on the beach. Why I say that is because the beach is the
only beautiful place for me. related to the scenery, the sea that becomes shining at dusk
and what I am most interested in is the amazing sunset also at dusk. It doesn't matter
where the beach is. Such as Juara Beach on Tioman Island, Pahang, Perhentian Beach
on Perhentian Island, Terengganu and others. What a wonderful place, right? Although
there are some enjoyable people playing and bathing there so the beach becomes
noisy, the beach is still my favorite place.

Whwn I was young, my family always brought me to the beach for having some
fun together. There were once, when I was 16 years old, my big family were having a
family day at Pantai Teluk Dalam, Pulau Redang , Terengganu and it was the best family
day I ever had in my life. We created a memorable time together and and accidentally
brought closer the brotherhood relationship between us as a family.
