Lab3 - Hardware-3

The document provides instructions for assembling a computer from scratch. It discusses choosing components like the CPU, motherboard, RAM, and case. It describes installing each component, such as applying thermal paste to the CPU and securing it in the motherboard. The document also covers connecting internal cables, booting the computer for the first time, and includes links to assembly video tutorials and a PC building simulator game. Students will build their own computer, write a project report on the assembly process, and have their work evaluated by classmates.

Hardware-3
• Hardware Basics
• Choosing the Parts
• Assemble a Computer

Objective: Assemble a computer from scratch

Computer Assembly
 A custom-built is a computer assembled from available components,
usually commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, rather than
purchased as a complete system from a computer system supplier, also
known as pre-built systems.
 You will need to work in a logical, methodical manner when working with
computer components. As with any learned trade, your computer
assembly skills will improve dramatically with practice.
 The tools:
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- ANTI-STATIC EQUIPMENT
- ZIP OR TWIST TIES
- THERMAL PASTE
Install CPU in the Motherboard
 The central processing unit (CPU) and the heat sink/fan assembly may be
installed on the motherboard before the motherboard is placed in the
computer case.
 The CPU and motherboard are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. When
handling a CPU and motherboard, make sure that you place them on a
grounded antistatic mat. You should wear an antistatic wrist strap while
working with these components.
 The CPU is secured to the socket on the motherboard with a locking
assembly. CPU sockets today are zero insertion force (ZIF) sockets.
 Thermal compound to maximize heat transfer and dissipation
 When you are installing a used CPU, clean the CPU and the base of the heat
sink with isopropyl alcohol. Doing this removes all traces of old thermal
compound.
 Install the heat Sink/Fan Assembly
 The detail steps(IT Essentials(Chapter-3)) (Assembly Videos)
Install RAM in the Motherboard
 Like the CPU and the heat sink/fan assembly, random-access memory
(RAM) is installed in the motherboard before the motherboard is secured
in the computer case.
 Consult the motherboard documentation or website of the manufacturer
to ensure that the proper installation of the RAM.
 The detail steps(IT Essentials(Chapter-3)) (Assembly Videos)
Install the Motherboard
 The motherboard is now ready to install in the computer case.
 Plastic and metal standoffs are used to mount the motherboard and to
prevent it from touching the metal portions of the case.
 You should install only the standoffs that align with the holes in the
motherboard. Installing any additional standoffs may prevent the
motherboard from being seated properly in the computer case.
 The detail steps(IT Essentials(Chapter-3)) (Assembly Videos)
Install Internal and External Drives
 Drives that are installed in internal bays are called internal drives.
 HDD and SSD are examples of internal drives.
 Drives, such as optical drives and floppy drives, are installed in drive bays
that are accessed from the front of the case.
 The detail steps(IT Essentials(Chapter-3)) (Assembly Videos)
Install Adapter Cards
 Adapter cards are installed to add functionality to a computer. Adapter
cards must be compatible with the expansion slot.
 There are three main expansion slots:
- PCI express 1x
- PCI express 16x
- PCI slot.

 The detail steps(IT Essentials(Chapter-3)) (Assembly Videos)

Connect All Internal Cables
 Power cables are used to distribute electricity from the power supply to
the motherboard and other components.
 Data cables transmit data between the motherboard and storage
devices, such as hard drives.
 Additional cables connect the buttons and link lights on the front of the
computer case to the motherboard.
 The Power Cables:
- Motherboard power connections
- SATA power connectors
- Molex power connectors
 The Data Cables: SATA Data Cables, PATA Data Cables.
Boot the Computer for the First Time
 When the computer is booted, the basic input/output system (BIOS)
performs a check of all the internal components.
 This check is called a power-on self test (POST)
 Beep Codes
 BIOS Setup
 The configuration data is saved to a special memory chip called a
complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS).

Pc Building Simulator
 PC Building Simulator is a simulation-strategy video game produced by
The Irregular Corporation and Romanian independent developer
Claudiu Kiss.
 The game is centered around owning and running a workshop which
builds and maintains PCs.
 It features real life parts
from brands such as ZOTAC
, Corsair, Intel, and NVIDIA
among numerous other
manufacturers.
Pc Building Simulator
 Gameplay Modes: Career, Inbox, Free build:
- Career: In Career mode, the game puts the player in responsibility of
a workshop where they must complete tasks that involve modifying
pre-built computers.
- Inbox: The Inbox is where the player receives in-game messages from
potential customers. The player is given the ability to reject or accept a
request, most often involving a PC. Potential requests include virus
removal, system upgrade, system fix, or rather the building of an
entirely new personal computer.
- Free build: the player is given unlimited money, and all the parts are
unlocked from the start. Players are free to build whatever they wish
and are without the constraint of constant jobs.
 Video
The Project
Objective:
- Choose the right parts of the pc according to the requirement
- Assemble the computer
Your Pc building Requirement
 Your Pc build should be able to run a specified number of programs
and games (2 Programs and 2 games)
 Your PC build should run them in the recommended/advance settings
 The choice of the programs and games of your build depends on your
Academic number
 Check the list of the programs and games provided by the instructor to
know your specific choice.
 Programs and Games List.
The Project Report
The Report:
 Section-1: Introduction, requirement, budget, etc.
 Section-2 : Choosing the PC Parts.
- It should contain the choosing process of every part of
your PC(I.e. mentioning the reasons for choosing every part)
- It should contain the main information and criteria that ensure
computer parts compatibility.
 Section-3: Pc Assembly
- The detail assembly of every parts using labels, numbers, photos etc.
 Section-4: Revisions
