Okay, class Thankyou for your participation, everyone is correct.
And for your understanding class what is the purpose and importance of nouns?
“ Akesha is raising her hand”
KESHA: Nouns are one of the most important elements of the English language.
They function as subjects; they show possession; they pluralize singular
words; and they act as common and proper words too
Okay that is correct Akesha.
Okay lastly daniel”
Students: Nouns are important because they refer to places, objects and
people and the more sophisticated abstract concepts. Without nouns, you will
be left with verbs, adjectives and adverbs. The lack of nouns will eradicate
any subject or object from your sentence which is as good as communication
essentially nothing.
“ Okay thankyou class”
V . MOTIVATION
( The students will watch a short video about Irregular Nouns)
https://youtu.be/sG10HhMpans
Okay class, as we start our new lessons, you will be watching a short video

.

( Students follow the instruction of the teacher)
( after watching the video presentation )
Teacher : Anna can you please stand and tell what is all about the topic ?
Anna : The video shows our new topic which is the Irregular Nouns and also it shows the rules of how
we are going to use the irregular nouns.
Okay that is definitely correct.
Another hand please, Akesha you are raising your hand
( Students will participate in giving their insights)
AKESHA: the video shows the difference between regular and irregular nouns because Regular Nouns
follows the regular way to make the noun plural is by adding “ s or es” but Irregular Nouns do not
follow the Irregular way .
Okay Thankyou Daniel, for your answer.. Any other hands?” okay no more raising their hands.
VI. PROPER DISCUSIION
Okay let us start our new lesson , But before that we must read our Lesson Objectives
“At the end of 20 minutes of class discussion, 90 percent of the Grade 8 section Narra students are
expected to:
a. Identify Irregular Nouns
b. Appreciate the significance of Irregular Nouns
c. Write a basic sentence using Irregular Nouns
(The students listen attentively to the teacher)
Our topic for today is related in our previous lesson but this type of nouns do not follow the same
rules as regular nouns when becoming plural and often follow a pattern, originating in the parent
language or rules of older forms of English.
But before that we must know what is Irregular Nouns
May I call Jayann to read…..
Jayann : Irregular Noun Is a type of noun that becomes plural by changing its spelling that do not
become plural by adding s or es.
Okay thankyou ms. Jayann
As Jayann reads Irregular Nouns do not follow the regular way unlike the regular noun in making the
noun plural. Understand?
Students : Yes mam
TEachers : so how we change the singular noun into plural noun in irregular noun? So it may seem like
they are just breaking grammar rules but really Irregular Plural Nouns are just Following Spelling Rules
(Students listen attentively)
So, there are rules for changing Irregular Plural Nouns
Can you read the first rule Ms. Allen
Allen: 1. IRREGULAR PLURAL NOUNS THAT END IN “ies”
If the word in a consonant plus “y” then change the “y” to an “i” and add the letters “es”
Example : SINGULAR NOUN: Baby
PLURAL NOUN: Babies
Okay thankyou Mr Allen .
Teacher: as what you observed the y changes into ies from singular noun Baby becomes the Plural
Noun Babies .
(Students carefully listens to teacher while discussing the lessons)
Teacher : Who wants to try to give another example?
( Daniel is raising her hand)
Okay Mr. Daniel would likely to try
Daniel : FROM SINGULAR NOUN: CANDY
TO PLURAL FORM : CANDIES
Teacher : that is definitely correct.
Teacher : okay very good Mr. Daniel you may take your seat.
I think you get it already the rule number right?
ALL STUDENTS: Yes Mam
Teacher : but there is a note that “ When a word ends in a vowel and “y” ( such as Monkey or Day)
You just easily add an “s” to the end ,
From Monkey to Monkeys
From Day to Days
Understand class ?
Student : Yes Mam
Teacher: Okay lets proceed to rule number 2 , please read ms. Akesha
2. IRREGULAR PLURAL NOUNS THAT END IN “ves”
For most nouns that end in “f” or “fe”, drop the “f’ or “fe” and add “ves”
n
EXAMPLE : SINGULAR NOUN : Knife
PLURAL NOUN: Knives
Okay thankyou Ms. Akesha
So rule number 2 simply said that those nouns that end in “ f or ‘”fe” must drop and easily replace or
add the “ves”
Is that clear class?
Students: Yes mam
Teacher : Who wants to try for another example …
( Ana raising her hand)
Teacher : okay Ms Ana can you give example for rule number 2
Ana : From Singular Pronoun Loaf change into Plural Noun Loaves
Teacher : Why it becomes Loaves
Anna: because the “f” is simply replace by “ves”
Teacher : That is correct Ana
Teacher : excellent .
I guess you already understand the rule number two , but take note on this : When a noun ends in a
double vowel and an “f” ( such as roof or proof) , it doesn’t change to “ves” in the plural form,
Instead , just add an “s” to the end and it goes like this : From Roof to Roofs
From Proof to Proofs
Okay , understand class?
All students: Yes Mam
Teacher : Lets procced to rule number 3 , please read Ms. Jayann
Jayann: IRREGULAR PLURAL NOUNS THAT END IN “us”
Change the “us” into an “i” ( especially comes from a Latin words),
Another is, it also acceptable to add “es” instead of changing to “ I” in some cases( especially if the
word has a Greek root)
EXAMPLE : SINGULAR NOUN: Syllabus
PLURAL NOUN: Syllabi
SINGULAR NOUN: Octopus
PLURAL NOUN: Octopi
Teacher : as what rule number state that nouns that end in “us” is just simply change the “us” into an
“i”( especially that comes from a latin root words)
And another exceptions is by adding “es” instead of changing to “I” ( especially if the word has a greek
root)
Did you get it class?
Teacher : Yes Mam .
And May I call on Allen to give another example for the rule number 3
(Allen responded to the question)
SINGULAR NOUN : Hippopotamus
PLURAL NOUN :* Hippopotami
* Hippopotamuses is also acceptable
Teacher :Thankyou Mr. Allen that is definitely correct.
And I think you ll understand the rule 3 so lets proceed to Rule 4 , Ms. Akesha please read the rule
number 4
Akesha:4. Another Latin word spelling convention
turns Singular Nouns that end in “um” into plural nouns that end in “ia”
Example: SINGULAR NOUN: CURRICULUM
PLURAL NOUN: CURRICULA
Teacher : thankyou Ms. Akesha
So rule number 4 simply said that singular nouns that end in “um” will drop out and replace by “ia”
So rule number 4 is very simple…
ALL Students: Yes Mam.
So may I call Daniel to give an example for the rule number 4
(Daniel responded)
From singular noun : Medium change to
Plural noun : Media
Teacher: Correct Mr. Daniel
And since you get already and understand now the rule number 4 lets proceed to rule number 5
Can you read rule number 5 Ana
(Ana responded)
5.For many words that end in “is” change the” is “ to an “es”
Example: SINGULAR NOUN: axis
PLURAL NOUN: axes
Teacher : Thankyou Ms. Ana
So as what Ms. Ana said the singular noun words that end in “is is simply replace to an “es” right?
All students: Yes mam
May I call somebody to give another example for rule number 5
(Jayann raised her hand)
Teacher : Okay Jayann please give another example.
(Jayann Responded)
From Singular Noun: Diagnosis change into
Plural Noun : Diagnoses
Teacher : why
Jayann : simply the “is” is replace by “es” that why it becomes Diagnoses
Teacher : okay verywell said.
Teacher : that is correct , thankyou Ms. Jayann , please take your seat.
And now let us proceed to rule number 6 , ALLEN PLEASE READ RULE number 6
6. IRREGULAR PLURAL NOUNS THAT CHANGE COMPLETELY
Certain Irregular Plural nouns such as children or teeth don’t follow any grammatical rules at all. The
only way to get them right is to memorize them.
Example : SINGULAR NOUN: Child
PLURAL NOUN: Children
Teacher : Thankyou Mr. Allen
So this rule said that there are certain Irregular Plural Nouns that don’t follow any grammmatical rules
and we only have to memorize their spelling right?
Like for example , From SINGULAR noun : FOOT
Change into PLURAL NOUN: Feet
Have you encounter these word class ?
Yes Mam
Teacher : so these certain IrregULAR Plural nOUNS DOES NOT FOLLOW grammatical rules. As the rule
number 5 stated ,
So , who wants to give a try for an example for rule number 5
(Akesha is raising her hand)
Teacher : Akesha please stand give an example for this rule
( responded)
Akesha: From singular noun: man to
Plural noun :men
This Plural nouns does not follow their own rules and the only way to get them right is to memorize
them.
Teacher : you are definitely correct.
So now let us proceed to the last rule , rule number 7
Please read Mr. Daniel
7. IRREGULAR PLURAL NOUNS THAT DON’T CHANGE AT ALL
SUCH AS : UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS - Don’t have plural nouns
They usually describe an uncountable quantity of something.
Example : SINGULAR NOUN: Hair
PLURAL NOUN: Hair
And also : UNCHANGING NOUNS - Many nouns have the same singular and plural forms, especially
species of animals. And you can tell that they are plural by reading the context rules in the rest of the
sentence.
EXAMPLE : SINGULAR NOUN: Deer
PLURAL NOUN: Deer
And when we use it in a sentence it goes like this: Three deer crossed the street.
TeachER : thankyou mr. Daniel , as what rule number 7 said , it simply stated that there are irregular
plural nouns that don’t change at all
Like in the example in Uncountable Noun from Singular Noun which is hair , to plural noun which is
Hair again …
Understand class ?
Yes mam,
Who can give another example for rule number 7 in uncountable noun
Ana is raising her hand)
Teacher ; so what is you answer Ms. Anna
Ana : From Singular Noun : Happiness
To Plural Noun which is Happiness again
Because happiness is a noun that is uncountable
Teacher: you are definitely correct, please take your seat.
Teacher ; And for Unchanging Nouns it is said that these nouns have the same singular and plural
forms, especially species of animals. And you can tell that they are plural by reading the context rules
in the rest of the sentence.
Who wants to try to give an example for rule number 7
Jayann is raising her hand)
Teacher ; please give an example
Jayann; From SINGULAR NOUN : FISH
TO PLURAL NOUN : FISH again
And we can use it in a sentence : for example: How many fish did you catch?
It doesn’t change the Plural noun because as what the rule stated there are nouns have the same
singular or plural forms especially in the soecies of animals , and we can only tell that they are plural
by reading the context rules in the rest of the sentence.
Teacher : very good Jyaan , very well said , pleaase take your seat.
Okay so I think that these lessons is very understandable and I guess that all of you understand the
what is irregular nouns and the proper usage of its rules when creating a n Irregular Nouns
and I think it is clear now?…
