As Sci 10 SLG Week 4 Quarter Ii

This student learning guide discusses electromagnetic radiation and its effects on living things and the environment. It provides examples of different types of EM radiation such as radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays. For each type of radiation, it describes how it is produced and potential dangers of too much or too little exposure, such as tissue damage, ozone depletion, skin cancer, and radiation poisoning. The guide includes enrichment activities to test the student's understanding of how different EM radiations are produced and their hazards.

MAYAPYAP Project MELC (Managing and Enhancing Learning through Contextualization)

National High School STUDENT LEARNING GUIDE IN SCIENCE 10

Quarter II, Week 4

Lesson 4: The Effects of EM Radiation on Living Things and the Environment

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

S10FE-IIe-f49: Explain the effects of EM radiation on living things and the

environment.

In this set of activities, you should:

1. describe the production of different EM radiations; and
2. identify the effects of the different EM radiations.

WHAT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER?

Good day Maylinian! Let us enjoy as we learn about the different effects of EM
radiations on living things and the environment😊

ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION
- Electromagnetic (EM) radiation is a form of energy that is all around us and takes many
forms, such as radio waves, microwaves, X-rays and gamma rays. Sunlight is also a
form of EM energy, but visible light is only a small portion of the EM spectrum,
which contains a broad range of electromagnetic wavelengths.
- All life is dependent on small doses of electromagnetic radiation.

TYPES OF EM RADIATION PRODUCTION OF EM ISSUES/ DANGERS OF TOO

RADIATION MUCH OR TOO LESS
EXPOSURE
Radio wave Accelerating charges Tissue damage
Microwave Accelerating charges and thermal Careless use of microwave oven
agitation can cause fire breakout
Infrared Thermal agitation Absorbed by the atmosphere
causing Greenhouse effect
Visible light Electronic transitions Retinal Damage or Blindness
Ultraviolet Thermal agitation and electronic Ozone depletion and Skin Cancer
transitions causing
X-ray Inner electronic transitions and fast Cancer causing
collisions
Gamma Ray Nuclear decay Cancer causing and Radiation
damages the body cells and
Mutation

YOUR TASKS!

Reminder: DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING ON THIS STUDENT LEARNING GUIDE.

Write your answers on your answers sheet.

Enrichment Activity 1: Arrange the Jumbled Words by using the production of EM radiation as clues.
ANSWERS:
1. Nuclear decay GRAYAMMA
1. GAMMA RAY
2. Accelerating charges IOWAVERAD
2. RADIOWAVE
3. Inner electronic transitions and fast collisions RAX-Y
3.XRAY
4. Accelerating charges and thermal agitation CROWAMIVE
4. MICROWAVE
5. Thermal agitation and electronic transitions IOLETULTRAV
6. Thermal agitation FREDRAIN 5. ULTRAVIOLET
7. Electronic transitions GHTVISILIBLE 6. INFRARED
7. VISIBLE LIGHT
Enrichment Activity 2: Identify the type of EM radiation that involves such hazard described by the statements
below. Write your answer. 2 POINTS EACH

1. A country bombed another country with a nuclear bomb explosion which causes massive damage to
ANSWERS:
infrastructures and health due to radiation poisoning and cell damage. ____________________________
1. GAMMA RAY
2. Australia has its ozone completely depleted that brought about intense wave of heat. __________________
2. ULTRAVIOLET
3. The greenhouse gas molecules absorb the IR light, and then re-radiate some of it back to the Earth's surface. This
3. ULTRAVIOLET
makes the surface hotter so it radiates more light. _______________________
4. RADIOWAVE
4. Large amount of radio frequency is emitted by a cell tower causing a rise in internal body heat that damages
tissues. _________________________ 5. GAMMA RAY
5. The meltdown of Chernobyl Power Plant releases high levels of radiation that causes mutation for the animals and
plants living within the area. _____________________

Written Task 4: Look around your surroundings and identify 5 types of EM radiation. Write what harm can it
bring to you or your environment. 10 POINTS
EXAMPLE: 1. Visible light emitted by phone. Prolonged exposure can cause retinal damage.
