What is PHYSICAL EDUCATION?
➢is the study, practice, and appreciation of
the art and science of human movement.
➢it is an integral part of the school
curriculum designed to provide activities
that not only promote skill development and
proficiency, but also enhance an individual’s
overall health.
LEGAL BASES
OF
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Article 1 of the International Charter of Physical
Education and Sports, UNESCO, Paris, 1978
Recommendation 1, Interdisciplinary Regional
Meeting of Experts on Physical Education,
UNESCO, Brisbane Australia, 1982 States that:
“The practice of Physical Education and Sports is a
Fundamental right for all”
“And this right should not be treated as different in
principle from the right to adequate food, shelter and
medical care.”
Article XIV, Section 19, 1986 Constitution
of the Republic of the Philippines
“The State shall promote Physical Education and encourage
sports programs, league competitions, and amateur sports
including training for international competition to foster
self-discipline, teamwork and excellence for the
development of a healthy and alert citizenry”
“All educational institutions shall undertake regular sports
activities throughout the country and in cooperation with
athletic club and other sectors.”
HISTORY OF PHYSICAL
EDUCATION
in the PHILIPPPINES
▪1901
➢Physical exercise was one of the subjects introduced in the public schools and a
regular program of athletics was developed.
▪1905
➢Baseball and Track and Field were introduced and taught to the young boys in
schools.
▪1909
➢The athletic program was inaugurated and emphasized the playing of western
sports and tennis coaching.
▪1910
➢Basketball was first introduced as a game for girls in the Carnival Meet held in
Manila, but was later discontinued in 1914.
▪1911
➢The Athletic Book was published which prescribes the simple group
games and rules for Team sports.
▪1919
➢ The syllabus entitled “Physical Education: A Manual for Teachers’’
was published and submitted by the Special Committee of
Superintendents and edited by Frederick O. England.
▪1920
➢Physical Education was made as a required subject in the curriculum
of all Public Schools.
▪1937 onwards
➢Physical Education was made a curricular subject in the secondary school
curriculum
➢The Bureau of Education introduced MASS ATHLETICS or Athletics for All
students.
➢Elementary students learned the Fundamentals of Sports and Activities and the
High School students played games and specialized Sports such as Volleyball,
Basketball and others.
▪ JUNE 21, 1969
➢R.A No. 5708 “The Schools Physical Education and Sports Development Act 1969”
was approved by Congress. This Act Provided for promotion and financing of an
integrated Physical Education and Sports Development Program.
▪1970
➢The revised Elementary Education Program of 1970 issued by the
Secretary of Education and Culture had its distinction features the
combination of HEALTH and SCIENCE as a subject area with P.E,
MUSIC, and ARTS in Grade 1-3 and in Grade 4-6 HEALTH and P.E
were taken as Subject Area.

➢Youth Development and Training was introduced to Secondary Level
▪1989
➢YDT had been revised to PHYSICAL
EDUCATION, HEALTH AND MUSIC (PEHM)
▪2000 ONWARD
➢The PEHM had been revised into MSEP-
Elementary Level and MAPEH- Secondary Level

EDUCATION
❖ Physical Development
Physical Fitness is the foremost aim Physical
Education.
❖ Emotional Development
Physical Education activities offers opportunities for
the development of self-esteem and ability to cope
with routine stresses of daily living.
❖ Social Development
It is the development and maintenance of a meaningful
interpersonal relationship.
❖ Mental Development
Through participation in Physical Education activities, the
individual develops his/her mental capacities as he/she learns the
principles, rules and strategies of games and sports.

IMPROVED PHYSICAL FITNESS
Physical education helps an individual
to develop muscular strength, flexibility,
muscular endurance, body composition,
and cardiovascular endurance that can
be used in their everyday life.
Physical Education helps to develop the motor
abilities of an individual which can be useful
in every physical activity they do.
SUPPORT OF OTHER SUBJECT
AREAS
Physical Education also
helps the other subjects in
the school curriculum as
they use their body as they
apply different theories and
skills in the different subject
areas.

in different physical activities
