How to read and write using play-script format
★ Name your play-script something memorable that relates to the story, situation or themes.

★ Character Lists should briefly outline who the character is and what they look like. These will
help the actor to plan for how they should look and act during the scene.

★ Setting descriptions should be written in italics at the beginning of a script to help the actors
to visualise their character’s surroundings.

★ Character names are given in UPPER CASE to differentiate them clearly from the spoken
Dialogue.

★ Dialogue is what the actors say aloud. Leave at least one line’s gap between each speaker.
Also, don’t write your script like a story - “No quotation marks or writing this →”, said Mr
Langford!

★ Stage directions are the actions the actor must perform during the scene. These are usually
written IN UPPER CASE and given in (brackets) or italics. The main idea is to differentiate
them clearly from the dialogue.

★ Format your script using left alignment and use an easy to read size 12 font such as Arial or
Times New Roman.

The Boss - Example Script

BOB is an average looking professor in his early forties. He wears an ill-fitting gray suit without a
tie. He is exhausted after a long day of marking student papers.
JANE is BOB’s supervisor. She is neatly dressed and moves with focus and deliberation - like a
tiger on the hunt.

A university lecture hall, with a large whiteboard in the center. To one side, a desk and an
overhead projector. On the other, BOB is stretching in the sun.
BOB: (GROANING) What a day. (INTERRUPTED BY THE SOUND OF KNOCKING AT THE
DOOR. HE OPENS IT.)

JANE: (ENTERS) If I had a dollar for every time you missed a marking deadline I’d be a
millionaire. How much longer will / you be?

BOB: / Give me a break, Jane, I've been at it all day.

JANE: (PAUSES) Please don’t interrupt me when i’m speaking, I’ve given you two formal warnings
already, one more and / you’ll be out of a job.

BOB: / What, you’ll fire me?! Ha! (BOB BEGINS TO PACK HIS BRIEFCASE TO HEAD HOME)

JANE: (CALMLY) Just be a little more… Respectful please, Robert. (PAUSES THEN EXITS)
Writing a script for your Group Devised Scene
Normally a group devised scene is developed through improvisation over a period of days or weeks.
However, it is always a good idea to write down your finished scene into script format, in case of
illness or misadventure, as a substitute performer may be used and a script would be very helpful.
