Algebraic Expressions

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the The Algebraic Expressions. The scope of this module in
MELC is to evaluates algebraic expressions for given values of the variables
& perform operations on polynomials.

The module is divided into two (2) lessons, namely:

Lesson 1. evaluates algebraic expressions for given values of the variables.
M7AL-IIc-25
Lesson 2. adds and subtracts polynomials. M7AL-IIc-27.0

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. differentiate between constants and variables in a given algebraic
expresion
2. identify the constants, variables and terms in a given algebraic expressions.
3. evaluate algebraic expressions for a given values of the variables
4. adds and subtracts polynomials

What is It

Algebraic expression is a symbol or set of symbols resulting from the

application of one or more fundamental operations of addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division to constants and variables.

Constant is a symbol that has a fixed value.

Variable is a symbol having no fixed value; a symbol that could take more
than one value.

Term is expressed as a product or quotient of a constant and a variable.

Terms are parts of an algebraic expression separated by plus or minus signs.

The number before an alphabet (variable) is called a constant.

Variable : A symbol which takes various numerical values is called a
variable.
The alphabet after a number (constant) is called a variable. In the formulas
d = 2r; 2 is a constant whereas, r and d are variables.

3
The process of finding the value of an algebraic expression is called
evaluating an algebraic expression.

Study This
Illustrative example 1: Evaluate 2y + 3 when y = 3
Solution: = 2(3) + 3 Substituting y by 3
=6+3 Multiplying 2 and 3
=9 Add 6 and 3

Illustrative example 2: Evaluate 3(a + 4) + (a - 2)

when a = 6
Solution: = 3(6 + 4) + (6 - 2) Substituting a by 6
= 3(10) + 4 Computing 6 + 4
and 6 - 2
= 30 + 4 Multiplying 3 and
10
= 34 Adding 30 and 4

Illustrative example 3: Evaluate 2(x + 4) + 3(y - 3)

when x = -3 and y = 5
Solution: = 2(-3 + 4) + 3(5 - 3) Substituting x by
-3 and y by 5
= 2(1) + 3(2) Computing -3 + 4
and 5 - 3
=2+6 Computing 2(1)
and 3(2)
=8 Computing 2 + 6

So, are you now familiar with how the solution is done? We replace the
variable with its given value. Then we simplify the expression the way we did
in the preious lesson by applying the rules on simplifying expressions.

What’s More
A square is a ‘’magic square’’ if the sums of the numbers in a row,
column, and diagonal are the same.
Use the square below and assigning values to x, y, and z and determining the
value of each expression. For example if x= 5, y = 4 and z =1, then the magic
square is:

x+y (x+z) - y x-z 5+4 (5+1) - 4 5-1 9 2 4

(x - y) - z x x +y+z (5 - 4) - 1 5 5+4+1 0 5 10
x+z (x + y) - z x-y 5+1 (5 + 4) - 1 5-4 6 8 1

Find the ‘’magic square’’ using x = 2, y = 4 and z = 1

z xy + 1 (y+z)-z
xy - z y+z x+1
x+y x-z xy

What is It

9
You have learned that a term is a constant or the product of a constant
and one or more variables.
MONOMIALS
A monomial is a term of the form axm, where a is a constant and m is a
positive whole number.

POLYNOMIALS

polynomial—A monomial, or two or more monomials combined by addition or

subtraction, is a polynomial.

 monomial—A polynomial with exactly one term is called a monomial.

 binomial—A polynomial with exactly two terms is called a binomial.
 trinomial—A polynomial with exactly three terms is called a trinomial.

Here are some examples of polynomials.

Polynomial b+1 4y2 – 7y + 2 4z4 + z3 + 8x2 – 9z + 1
Monomial 14 8y2 -9x3y5 -13
Binomial a+ 7 4b - 5 y - 16
2
3x – 9x2
3

Trinomial x2 – 7x + 12 9y2 + 2y - 8 6m4 – m3 + 8m z4 + 3z2 - 1

Notice that every monomial, binomial and trinomial is also a polynomial. They
are just special members of the ‘’family’’ of polynomials and so they have
special names. We use the words monomial, binomial and trinomial when
referring to these special polynomials and just call all the rest polynomials.

A. Determine whether each polynomial is a monomial, binomial, trinomial or

multi-polynomial.

____________2. -5a4b2
____________3. 2x5 – 5x3 – 9x2 + 3z + 4
____________4. 13 – 5m3
____________5. q

Determine the degree of a polynomials

The degree of a polynomial and he degree of its term are determined by the
exponents of the variable.
A monomial that hasno variable and a constant, is a special case. The degree
is 0, it has no variable.

DEGREE OF A POLYNOMIAL
The degree of a term is the sum of the exponents of its variable.
The degree of a constant is 0.
The degree of a polynomial is the highest degre of all its term.

Let’s see how this works by looking at several polynomials. We’ll take it step
by step, starting with monomials, and then progressing to polynomials with
more terms.
Monomial 14 8y2 -9x4y4 -13a
Degree 0 2 8 1

10
Binomial a+7 4b2–5b x2y-16 3n3–9n2
Degree of each term 1 0 2 1 3 0 3 2
Degree of polynomial 1 2 3 3

Trinomial x2–7x+12 9a2+6ab+b2 6m4-m2n2+8mn5 z4+3z2-1

Degree of each term 1 0 3 2 0 4 3 2 1 0

A polynomial is in standard form when the terms of a polynomial are written

in descending order of degree.

Combining Like Terms

In order to combine like terms, the terms must contain exactly the same literal
coefficient ( variables to the same powers).

Example 1: Simplify the expression by combining like terms.

7x5 + 2x2 − 3x2 + 3 − x5

Solution:

Rewrite the expression so that like terms are grouped:

(7x5 − x5) + (2x2 − 3x2) + 3

Add the numerical coefficients for each set of like terms. The variables carry
along:

7x5 − x5 = (7− 1) x5 = 6x5

2x2 − 3x2 = (2 − 3)x2 = − 1x2 = −x2

The simplified form of 7x5 + 2x2 − 3x2 + 3 − x5 is 6x5 − x2 + 3.

11
Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

Be sure to change the subtraction to addition before combining like terms.

Example 2: Subtract the polynomials.

(4x − 5y2 + 2 − x2) −(−2y + 2x2 − 3x + 7)

Solution:

Change the subtraction into addition by distributing negative one through the
2nd set of parentheses. The sign of each term in the 2nd parentheses
changes.

(4x −5y2 + 2 − x2) −(−2y + 2x2 − 3x + 7)

= 4x −5y2 + 2 − x2 + 2y − 2x2 + 3x − 7

Rewrite the expression so that like terms are grouped:

(4x + 3x) + ( − x2 − 2x2) + (2 − 7) −5y2 + 2y

Combine like terms by adding the coefficients.

The simplified form of (4x − 5y2 + 2 − x2) −(−2y + 2x2 − 3x + 7) is

7x −3x2 − 5 −5y2 + 2y .
