the INTRODUCTION
I have always been led by design. Driven by an
innate curiosity, I lean into spontaneity, embrace
failure, and most importantly trust my eye to allow a
room, a home to unfold as it wants to. This intuitive
process really informed the design of my Brooklyn
Townhouse. I had been itching to get my hands on
a project that scared me a little and boy, did this
late 1800s Greek Revival challenge and stretch me
in ways I never could have anticipated. But it was
also my greatest teacher.
This home strengthened my architecture and
design muscles, it forced me to problem-solve and
step out of my comfort zone. Without a doubt, this
home is my design epic, my masterpiece, second
only to being my family’s sanctuary. It helped me
understand what I was drawn to, gave me
confidence, and allowed me to define what I love
about design, what excites me most, and how I
want to live in my spaces.
This home has given me so much over the years but perhaps the most exhilarating part of
my Brooklyn journey has been sharing it with all of you—the EyeSwoon community! Your
response to my home has truly blown me away and I can’t thank you enough for your endless
support and kindness. To express my gratitude, my team and I combed through allll of your
questions on Instagram to create this Encyclopedia of Swoon—the ultimate room-by-room
guide with EVERY. SINGLE. SOURCE from the paint colors to the furniture, and even the
suppliers—it's all here!
Love,
the PARLOR FLOOR
THE ENTRYWAY. THE STAIRS. THE LIVING ROOM.
THE DINING ROOM. THE KITCHEN. THE TERRACE.
the ENTRYWAY
I desired a really dark entryway that enveloped you as you walk in. To achieve that, I painted the
doors, walls, and ceiling with a graphite, almost black hue which beautifully contrasts with the
checkerboard black and white tiles and the original curve of the entryway door. To inject
warmth, I added a vintage burlwood table, an art deco alabaster flush mount, and a vintage
bench reupholstered in salmon silk velvet. The Sam Messenger artwork brings everything
together while continuing the black-and-white theme onto the parlor floor.

the STAIRS
Simply put, this is my stairway to heaven. When Victor and I began renovations, we knew we
wanted to take down the wall that separated the hallway and the stairs from the rest of the
living space, and allow the natural light from the back of the house to infiltrate throughout. In
doing this, the stairwell became the first thing people see as they enter. So we restored the
original design, adding a classic curved detail on the bottom corner, and painting both the
stairs and the railing black. This striking combination of the black stairs with the white walls has
a subtly commanding presence, deliberately drawing the eye upwards. Opening up this space
allowed for a stylish vignette at the base of the stairs which is now one of my favorite spots to
drink coffee each morning.

the LIVING ROOM
The living room is really special to me because it's where the design language of this home was
born. The vintage 1970s Mario Bellini Cameleonda sofa for B&B Italia was the very first piece I
bought and I had it reupholstered in a putty velvet. I love how the low-slung, bulbous design
contrasts against the slicker, angular edges of the Apparatus marble coffee table. In order to
create a living space that feels rich and layered, I united furniture and objects at varying heights
to draw your eyes around the room, bouncing from point to point, lending it a playful allure. This
is where we spend most of our time as a family.

the DINING ROOM
Hire a professional and don't be afraid to alter a finish. The detailing of an iconic Jacques Adnet
sideboard made my heart sing, but its original chestnut color did not. I also loved the silhouette
of Niels Møller's classic chairs, but not their rosewood finish. Undeterred, I had my Adnet piece
stripped and bleached to suit my color scheme (causing a gasp among my design-savvy
friends) and my Møller chairs dyed black. The classic pendant lamp hanging above the black
dining furniture helps to define the dining area. Without walls to serve as boundaries, I needed
to find a way to make each area feel intimate and distinct, yet cohesive.

the KITCHEN
THE ISLAND. THE SHELVES. THE PANTRY.
THE NOOK. THE POWDER ROOM.
the KITCHEN island
I had a clear vision for the design in the kitchen, but I continued to vacillate on the pendant over
the island. It was in the waiting that I realized I didn't want a pendant at all. I filled a vintage
vessel with seasonal branches, which brought the outdoors in and offered an unexpected
verticality to what was once a confusing void. The island could have read as a monolithic block
but by raising the island up onto legs, it offered some levity to the solid mass which allowed it
to feel more like a piece of furniture. I continued with this concept by using decorative knobs
and designing the face of the island to look and feel like a dresser. Because my refrigerator
was on the opposite side of the kitchen, I built a custom fridge drawer into the island so that my
produce could be easily accessible.

the KITCHEN shelves
The design work for this epic 20' floating marble shelf actually began behind the walls with
metal stud bracing in the wall 16” apart. Since those studs are essentially hollow, they needed
to be further reinforced. In order to withstand the weight of the marble shelf, they adhered
plywood blocking between the studs for an additional layer of support. Hardened steel L
brackets were then attached to the plywood and into the studs for the heavy marble shelf to
slide into. To achieve this, they had the marble fabricated to be 2” thick and slotted at the back
so the L bracket can slide within the cavity of the stone. Finally, drywall was installed before the
slab of marble was applied, concealing the entire inner workings.

the KITCHEN pantry
I know you all think I have it together at all times with the perfectly curated images I put forth on
Instagram, but truth be told, I am a bit of a disheveled, unorganized mess. I never have a place
for things—papers, and bills, and linen napkins. My kitchen accessories drawers are always
bursting at the seams and things are continually getting stuffed into the abyss of junk drawers.
Knowing this about myself, I purposely designed a coffee station that had a place for everything
—and I mean everything. That said, knowing I would never follow my own rules, I also designed
the coffee pantry to have retractable doors to close shop on that mess at any given moment!

the NOOK
It is true that many seemingly “simple” decorative decisions need to be considered in the
construction phase. This is certainly the case for the floating desk in my kitchen nook. The
material is soapstone and was a leftover remnant piece from the stone yard. In order to support
the heavy stone, there is plywood bracing embedded in the drywall and a custom rectangular
frame was created in the exact size of the desk. The metal frame was mounted to the sidewalls
and drilled into the plywood bracing. The stone rests upon the metal frame and the face of the
stone desk overhangs beyond the frame ever so slightly, concealing the metal framing. I love
how the horizontal surface dissects the overall vertical composition.

the POWDER ROOM
I am often asked "What’s behind the door?" in my Brooklyn kitchen. TA-DA! It’s the teeniest
powder room on the parlor floor replete with a custom soapstone sink that is floating and über
shallow. But my favorite design detail is the monochromatic rope trim that lines the perimeter
of the room. Can you see it? For me, it’s the small details that really take a room from stylish to
sublime—this is what makes me swoon. When you give the eye an opportunity to explore,
linger, and ruminate, it delights the senses and makes you feel welcome. That’s how we
should all feel at home.

the TERRACE
Situated within an L-shaped crevice off the kitchen and only measuring 6-by-10 feet,
I struggled with the asymmetry of the existing design. One side of the house was
deeper while the other was shorter. So, Victor and I made the decision to open up
the back of the house to the interior with two sets of custom bifold doors that
essentially pushed the balcony out to make it a square. The end result is an indoor-
outdoor living room that is truly an extension of the house.

THE HALLWAY. THE BEDROOM. THE BATHROOM.
the BEDROOM
My Brooklyn bedroom was very much a work in progress. It changed quite a lot over time, or
perhaps a more honest statement would be that I struggled to get the components “right” on my
first or second… okay, maybe third try. This 1970’s Lelli light was actually purchased for the dining
room but it found a home over our bed after the initial purchase failed. The ceiling was repainted
to match the walls months after we moved in to make the room feel more cohesive. I changed
the crown molding (yup, after I redid the ceiling) because the initial profile that was spec’d was far
too diminutive. The French 40’s bench was reupholstered twice—a very expensive mishap. The
takeaway? We are a work in progress, always!

the BATHROOM
There is friction to be found in playing with extremes. Boasting old European charm, our
bathroom took on a decidedly feminine identity with its pink-veined marble shower, 1930s
Murano chandelier resembling a flower’s stamen, and romantic freestanding bathtub. I
intentionally contrasted the daintiness by injecting harsh black elements—black window
frames, vanity mirrors (which I painted myself), and a range of vintage vessels. I also introduced
strong sculptural forms, like a nude male torso and strident sconces.

the HALLWAY
Hallways are rooms, too! Traditional spaces—stairways, hallways, landings—are often wasted
design opportunities. In this hallway, which leads to our bedroom, I cut a console in half to fit
the hall's shallow depth and used it as an anchor, while a plinth with a vessel tucked into the
landing corner adds a statuesque quality. Search for furniture with a thin profile and consider
retrofitting to accommodate your space. Hallways are also ideal places to play with verticality.

THE FAMILY ROOM. JIVAN'S ROOM. THE OFFICE.
the FAMILY ROOM
For our family room, I craved a formal library, but with the comfort to slouch into a plush sofa
and watch movies or read as a family. The initial vision was in line with the neutral tonality of
the home, but something wasn’t working. The room felt incomplete, so we enveloped the
walls and ceiling in deeply saturated navy plaster, which offered a suede-like quality. The dark
hue demanded furniture that was equally weighted in form and color; we added a bespoke
sofa designed by Giancarlo Valle and a jewel-toned fringed chair and velvet ottoman inspired
by Milanese design. Once transformed, the room became the cozy nook it wanted to be.

jivan's ROOM
I was immediately smitten with an image of a Scandinavian raw plywood platform bed I found
on Pinterest. I knew that this simple material would be the modernist look Jivan was after as
well as provide welcome relief to the dark hues he desired. Knowing Jivan would need a desk
throughout high school, I designed an entire wrap-around built-in that would connect the
desk, the sneaker cubbies, the queen platform bed with a twin trundle below, and wall-to-floor
ceiling closets. My favorite design solution is a series of padded felted wall panels behind
Jivan's bed that injected a tailored look while also offering much-needed comfort.

Your design approach to a home office is not unlike any other room in the house. It should
speak your visual language and evoke personality. But perhaps the most important thing to
remember is the delicate dance between aesthetics and utility. A workspace should be

the GARDEN
I always like to resist the obvious. I knew I wanted to do a gravel yard with a Mediterranean feel,
so I collaborated with Brook Klausing of Brook Landscape on the tone and texture palette along
with the scale of the plantings. We designed a patio area using stone tiles that felt
complementary to the travertine and blue stone marble checkerboard on the terrace. These
were arranged into quads and then we mortared the pebbles in between to avoid any instability
when people are sitting or walking in that area. Brook's team then laid creeping thyme in
between the tiles to break up the tonal monotony. The end result is a space that feels lived in
and natural while still being rooted in a European sensibility.
