1 What Is A Computer Network

A computer network connects computers and other devices together to allow for sharing of information. It consists of nodes, which are the individual computers or devices, and links, which are the physical connections between nodes. There are several types of computer networks including personal area networks (PANs) connecting devices near one person, local area networks (LANs) connecting devices in a small geographic area like a home or office, metropolitan area networks (MANs) connecting LANs within a city, and wide area networks (WANs) connecting across large geographic areas like cities and countries.

What is a Computer Network?

In general terms, a network is an interconnected group of people or objects capable of

sharing information with one another. A computer network implies a group of
computers (and other technology related devices such as printers, tablets and phone
systems) that are connected together using physical media (wiring) or using various
wireless protocols.

A computer network consists of nodes. Each node refers to a specific computer or

device using the network. The network also consists of links – the physical
connections that carry messages between various nodes.

PAN

A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network used for communication

among
computer and different information technological devices close to one person.
Is a small network established for communication between different devices, such as
laptops,computers, mobiles, and PDAs.
A pan may include wired and wireless devices.
The reach of a pan typically extends to 10 meters.
LAN

Local Area Network (LAN) provides data communication within shorter distance and
connects several devices such as computers and printers. This type of network
contains computers that are relatively closer and are physically connected with cables
and wireless media.

A local area network (LAN) is a network that connects computers and devices in a
limited geographical area such as a home, school, office building, or closely
positioned group of buildings.

MAN

Man is relatively larger than LAN and extends across a city or a

metropolitan.
It is created by connecting two or more LANs located at different
locations in a city.

WAN

A wide area network (WAN) is a computer network that covers a large geographic
area such as a city, country, or spans even intercontinental distances.
A WAN uses a communications channel that combines many types of media such as
telephone lines, cables, and air waves.
A WAN often makes use of transmission facilities provided by common carriers, such
as telephone companies.
One of the most prominent examples of the existing wans is the Internet.
