LET TER FROM THE EDITOR

Dear Reader,
In God’s economy, there’s abundance all around. But in our fallen world, scarcity often jumps out to us, doesn’t
it? Whether the scarcity is real (and it is all too often real) or rather a scarcity of imagination to perceive resources
that could be shared more lovingly, one of the biggest costs of scarcity is the way it distorts our relationships
through lurking fears or mutual suspicion. Scarcity saps community and makes networks and hospitality more
brittle, more subject to retrenchment and gatekeeping. Zero-sum games drain everyone’s balance down.

Keeping an eye open for divine abundance is one of the many reasons I’m so delighted to work with books —
because has anyone ever said, “There just aren’t enough books”? I don’t think so. (Not enough book shelves, yes …)

So as we send you this season’s catalog of new and forthcoming releases, I hope it will feel like a fresh slice of
God’s abundance for you and your communities. In the pages that follow, we want to give you enough of a sample
for you to find something that would help nourish and connect you to God and your neighbors and even an enemy
if necessary.

Our Fall 2023 catalog contains quite a lineup, including:

• Books by biblical scholars on the integral connection between the best readings of Old and New
Testaments with discipleship, justice, and humility. Look for excerpts from Dennis Edwards’s and Michael
Rhodes’s books on pages 13 and 7.
• Groundbreaking research on the identity and cultural resonances of the figure Artemis of the Ephesians,
with rich evidence from Greek and Roman classics and archaeology, not to mention the biblical writings of
Luke and Paul. My interview with Sandra Glahn appears on page 11 (with the “director’s cut” full-length
version online at ivpress.com).
• The question, “What hath Darwin to do with Scripture?” gets a mind-and-faith-expanding answer from the
Old Testament scholar Dru Johnson, and he and I talk about his book on page 17.
• Michael Bird soars to new heights to give us his Bird’s-eye view of Luke–Acts, and IVP Academic associate
editor Rachel Hastings talks with him about the project on page 19.
• How we engage with stories and great storytellers gets spiritual and historical consideration in new books
by Jennifer Holberg and Mark Noll. (See excerpts on pages 29 and 31.)

But we have hundreds, no, make that thousands, of InterVarsity Press titles in print, so as always this slim catalog
is only a fraction of what’s available. The abundance runs deep and broad.

Happy reading!

A Guide to the New Testament's Composition,

Formation, and Authority
Despite the profound influence of the New Testament, a variety of
questions related to its background and history remain common.
Contemporary readers often find the subject of the canon’s origin
and formation to be complicated and confusing, while scholars
continue to struggle to find agreement about basic elements of the
canon’s development. In this engaging study, Benjamin P. Laird
explores several misunderstood, disputed, and overlooked topics in
order to provide fresh insight and clarity about the canon’s creation
and modern relevance. The volume addresses questions such as:
• Was there a single “original autograph” of each New Testa-
ment writing?
• Who exactly were the “original readers” of the New Testament
writings?
• Did theological controversies play a decisive role in prompting
the canon’s formation?
• How did such a diverse body of writings come together to
form a single canonical collection?
• Is there a basis for the canon’s ongoing authority?
Wide-ranging yet accessible, Creating the Canon offers an illumi-
nating treatment of the composition, formation, and authority of the
New Testament and serves as a valuable guide for all.

A Biblical Vision for Practicing Justice

Many Christians and churches are rediscovering that God cares
deeply about justice, but opinions abound as to what an approach
to biblical justice might look like in contemporary society. What
exactly does the Bible mean by justice, and what does it have to do
with poverty, racism, and other issues in our world? More impor-
tantly, how do we become the kind of people who practice justice?

Biblical scholar Michael Rhodes argues that the Bible offers a vision
of justice-oriented discipleship that is critical for the formation of
God's people. Grounded in biblical theology, virtue ethics, and his
own experiences, he shows that justice is central to the Bible, central
to Jesus, and central to authentic Christian discipleship. Justice
stands at the heart of Scripture. Following Jesus demands that we
become just disciples in an unjust world.

"The church today urgently needs to be discipled by the Scripture's

vision for justice. Michael Rhodes illuminates passages across
the Old and New Testaments to show how the call to justice
is central to God's vision for the community of faith."

A Personal and Biblical Treatment of the Many

Dimensions of Evil
The evil that afflicts our lives often leaves us confused and direc-
tionless, wounded and powerless. How should we respond to evil's
power to assault us? How can we understand God's work in a world
that seems all too often to be permeated with evil?
Narrating her own wrestling with evil as well as engaging in biblical
and philosophical analysis, biblical scholar Ingrid Faro explores the
many dimensions to evil. Soberly honest, biblically engaged, and
theologically nuanced, Demystifying Evil examines the power of evil
to disrupt and fragment our lives and tempt us to collude with it.
But evil does not have the last word. Faro takes us on a journey into
the book of Genesis, the Ancient Near East culture, the cross, and
her own story of suffering to engage the undoing of evil.

Are Women Saved Through Childbearing?

Some Christians think Paul's reference to "saved through child-
bearing" in 1 Timothy 2:15 means that women are slated primarily
for delivering and raising children. Alternate readings, however,
sometimes fail to build on the best historical and textual evidence.
Sandra Glahn thinks that we have misunderstood Paul by misun-
derstanding the context to which he wrote. A key to reading and
applying 1 Timothy, Glahn argues, lies in getting to know a myste-
rious figure who haunts the letter: the goddess Artemis.
Based on groundbreaking research and new data about Artemis of
the Ephesians, Nobody's Mother demonstrates how better background
information supports faithful interpretation. Combining spiritual
autobiography with scholarly exploration, Glahn takes readers on a
journey to ancient Ephesus and across early church history. Unveiling
the cult of Artemis and how early Christians related to it can give us
a clearer sense of the type of radical, countercultural fellowship the
New Testament writers intended Christ's church to be.
Through Paul's advice to Timothy—and the surprising help of an
ancient Greek myth—Nobody's Mother lays a biblical foundation for
men and women serving side by side in the church.

A Biblical and Pastoral Look at Humility

The modern church is immersed in a competitive, polarized, and
status-driven society. It's hard to have conversations about impor-
tant issues when so many are defensive and unwilling to learn. The
health and witness of the church urgently depend on recovering an
essential biblical virtue: humility.
New Testament scholar Dennis R. Edwards illuminates humility
as a, if not the, distinctive identity marker of followers of Jesus.
Tracing the theme throughout Scripture, he demonstrates how true
humility is grounded in submission to God and becomes manifest
in all areas of life. Edwards defuses common misconceptions about
humility and explores its role in Christian community, conflict,
leadership, suffering, worship, and stewardship.
As we learn from and honor the humble instead of the power-
hungry, humility paradoxically empowers God's people—including
those who are often marginalized. Filled with stories from the
author's ministry experience, this book addresses common areas
of leadership failure and how to avoid them, applies biblical texts
on humility to multiethnic ministry and justice work, and issues a
compelling challenge to the church.

Expert Contributions on Prophetic Interpretation

How should Christians read prophetic literature? Questions abound
both in the academy and the church as to how to engage the prophets,
particularly in light of the New Testament. The Gospel writers and the
church fathers all read and appealed to the Old Testament, but are we
as modern-day readers supposed to take the same approach?
This volume is a dialogue among scholars that identifies the interpre-
tive methods used throughout history while also charting a construc-
tive way forward for our own approach to reading the Major Prophets.
This collaborative endeavor offers fresh and helpful insights to
scholars, students, and pastors alike, bringing together experts on
Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel to illuminate the following topics:
• How the Apostles Read the Major Prophets as Christian
Scripture
• Limits on Reading the Major Prophets as Christian Scripture
• Reading the Major Prophets in the Footsteps of the Apostles
• The History of Interpretation of the Major Prophets as Christian
Scripture
• Preaching the Major Prophets as Christian Scripture

How Darwinism and Biblical Thought Connect

Can the ideas of Scripture and evolutionary science be mutually
illuminating? Believe it or not, the book of Genesis might have been
the most Darwinian text in the ancient world.
Biblical scholar Dru Johnson calls us beyond typical crea-
tion-versus-evolution debates to explore the conceptual worlds
underlying both Scripture and evolutionary science. He points
toward remarkable continuities and discontinuities between the
Bible's central concerns and those of Darwin and modern science—
ideas so fundamental that they can easily escape our notice.
The Hebrew creation accounts, Johnson argues, weave together
three key themes on the origins and development of humans and
animals, themes that are also essentially Darwinian:
• the connection among scarcity, cooperation, and violence
• the fitness of creatures to their environments
• the genealogical aims of sexual reproduction
When we enter deeply into the metaphysical imagination of the
biblical authors, we discover surprising ways in which the two
accounts converge—and conflict.

"In this highly readable and fascinating book, Dru Johnson offers
readers an intriguing, imaginative, and eye-opening account that
offers a window into two disparate worlds—a world of evolutionary
science and a world of (some of) the biblical authors—while also
showing them to be, in many ways, complementary to one another."

Michael Bird's Introduction to Luke–Acts

What do the books of Luke and Acts teach us about God, Jesus, and
the early church? How do these two books relate to each other? And
what do they mean for us today?
In this accessible and compelling introduction, Michael Bird draws
us into the wide-ranging narrative of Luke-Acts to discover how Luke
frames the life of Jesus and of the first disciples who set out from
Jerusalem to "the ends of the earth" proclaiming the Good News. Bird
shows us how these two books, when read together, tell a cohesive
narrative about Jesus, the Church, and the mission of God—with
implications for the whole of our lives today. Situating both books in
their historical and literary context, Bird moves through an explora-
tion of their central theological themes and culminates with consid-
eration of the books' relevance for contemporary social issues.

A Theology of Disability and Church Leadership

People with disabilities are often excluded from full participation
in church communities. Accessibility is not enough—to truly work
toward reconciliation, churches must both consider the theological
implications of disability and also become places where people with
disabilities lead.
Disabling Leadership presents a practical theology of disability for
thoughtful church leaders and congregants. Written by practitioners
and a scholar-pastor who are engaged in ministry together, this book
encompasses cutting-edge theological ethics as well as stories of
how such commitments are embodied in a real church community.
Moving beyond paternalistic views of disability that seek to extract
"inspiration" from another's story, the authors equip readers to
explore key themes such as:
• what it means to be human
• how to understand suffering and healing
• how churches can be welcoming and accessible communities
• how to face common challenges and issues in resisting ableism
When we foster genuinely inclusive leadership teams and engage in
the difficult work of just and dignifying relationships, our churches
will be less likely to treat anyone as a "project" and will better reflect
God's love as the body of Christ.

"This book shifts the goalpost: mere inclusion of disabled

people is not what the church needs. What it needs—and needs
desperately—is the leadership of differently abled members DECEMBER 2023
of Christ's broken and gloriously resurrected body." 192 pages, paperback, 6 x 9 inches, 978-1-5140-0335-0, $24.00

THEOLOGY | DOCTRINE OF HOLINESS

Neo-Holiness from a Wesleyan Perspective

The Christian life includes many demands, but perhaps none are
as challenging or as misunderstood as the biblical command to "be
holy" (Lev. 11:44 and 1 Pet. 1:16) or to "be perfect" (Matt. 5:48).
How should we understand these charges?
In this volume, three scholars from the Wesleyan tradition offer a
collective treatment of the theme of holiness that includes:
• exegesis of key biblical passages
• a survey across church history
• theological reflections on the relationship between entire sancti-
fication and other doctrines
In addition, the coauthors constructively argue for a "neo-holiness"
model that encourages the pursuit of Christian perfection but
avoids the pitfalls of Pelagianism by incorporating historic under-
standings of grace and the work of the Holy Spirit with the best of
the Wesleyan tradition. Here, the commands to "be holy" and to "be
perfect" take on new meaning.

"This readable, concise, and scholarly book on Christian

sanctification is a 'three-in-one' approach, including contributions
from biblical, historical, and systematic theology. . . . This is
necessary reading for all within the tradition and a helpful primer
for all pastors, teachers, and laity across the church."

THEOLOGY | DIVINE IMMUTABILIT Y

A New Look at Kierkegaard and Immutability

Danish theologian and philosopher Søren Kierkegaard was not
afraid to express his opinions. Living amid what he perceived to
be a culturally lukewarm Christianity, he was often critical of his
contemporary church.
But that does not mean Kierkegaard rejected traditional Chris-
tian theology. Indeed, at a time when many of his contemporaries
were questioning the classical doctrine of God, Kierkegaard swam
against the stream by maintaining orthodox Christian beliefs.
In this New Explorations in Theology volume, Craig A. Hefner
explores Kierkegaard's reading of Scripture and his theology to
argue not only that the great Dane was a modern defender of the
doctrine of divine immutability (or God's changelessness) in
response to the disintegration of the self, but that his theology can
be a surprising resource today.

THEOLOGY | DOCTRINE OF CREATION

A Distinctly Theological Look at Genesis 1

The Christian claim that the triune God is the creator of the
universe is both exegetically grounded and theologically rich.
Yet discussions about God's work of creation are often over-
whelmed by questions such as the age of the earth and the relation-
ship between divine creation and evolution. Without completely
ignoring such issues, Peter Leithart offers a decidedly theological
interpretation of the creation account from Genesis 1.
By engaging with classic discussions of creation, including those of
Plato and Aristotle, as well as Christian articulations as varied as those
of Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, Sergius Bulgakov, Karl
Barth, and Robert Jenson, Leithart embraces the challenge of talking
about God and God's first work. Here, readers will discover what it
means to articulate a theology that is rigorously grounded in the first
chapter of the Bible and the creedal affirmation of God the Father
almighty, who is the creator of the heavens and earth.

"Creator is theological exegesis at its finest. . . . To read Genesis 1

A Celebration of Story, Both Literary and Biblical

Humans are story-shaped creatures.
We make sense of our world, pattern our lives, and reflect on what is
ultimately significant through language and the words that compose
our stories. But how does this relate to the narrative of the Bible and
the story that God is writing through history?
In Nourishing Narratives, writer and professor Jennifer Holberg
engages with words from the likes of Dante, Gerard Manley
Hopkins, Flannery O'Connor, Marilynne Robinson, and more
while also offering some of her own stories to reflect on the impor-
tance of story to our lives and our faith.
Here, readers are encouraged not only to understand how stories
nourish our faith, but to discover how our stories are part of God's
great story.

Mark Noll on C. S. Lewis's American Reception

Perhaps no other literary figure has transformed the American
religious landscape in recent history as much as C. S. Lewis. Even
before the international publication and incredible success of his
fictional works such as The Chronicles of Narnia or apologetic
works like Mere Christianity, Lewis was already being read "across
the pond" in America. But who exactly was reading his work? And
how was he received?
With fresh research and shrewd analysis, this volume by noted histo-
rian Mark A. Noll considers the surprising reception of Lewis among
Roman Catholic, mainline Protestant, and evangelical readers to see
how early readings of the Oxford don shaped his later influence.

"In this prophetic and timely book, preeminent historian Mark A.

Noll has uncovered the secret of Lewis's success: he was deeply
learned, theologically focused, and unusually creative. Noll himself
brilliantly models how to embody these traits today."

The Hansen Lectureship Series features reflections related to the

imaginative work and lasting influence of seven British authors, including
C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, George MacDonald, and Dorothy L. Sayers.
The books in the series are based on the Ken and Jean Hansen Lectureship, an annual lecture series hosted at the Marion E. Wade Center
at Wheaton College, named in honor of former Wheaton College trustee Ken Hansen and his wife, Jean, and endowed in their memory
by Walter and Darlene Hansen. Each book includes three lectures by a Wheaton College faculty member on one or more of the Wade
Center authors with responses by fellow faculty members.
Founded in 1965, the Marion E. Wade Center houses a major research collection of writings and related materials by and about seven
British authors: Owen Barfield, G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, George MacDonald, Dorothy L. Sayers, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Charles
Williams. The Wade Center collects, preserves, and makes these resources available to researchers and visitors through its reading room,
museum displays, educational programming, and publications. All of these endeavors are a tribute to the importance of the literary,

WORLDVIEW & PHILOSOPHY | APOLOGETICS

An Accessible Primer on Seven World Religions

Understanding the beliefs and practices of other faiths is essential
not just to the task of interreligious dialogue, but also to grasping
one's own faith. In this brief volume, philosopher Douglas Groothuis
creatively uses a single sentence representing each of several world
religions as a way to open readers to their depth and complexity:
• Atheism: "God Is Dead."
• Judaism: "I Am Who I Am."
• Hinduism: "You Are That."
• Buddhism: "Life Is Suffering."
• Daoism: "The Dao That Can Be Spoken Is Not the Eternal Dao."
• Christianity: "Before Abraham Was, I Am."
• Islam: "There Is One God, and Mohammad Is His Prophet."
With a sympathetic but not uncritical approach, Groothuis
welcomes readers to a vital and global conversation.

"This work is unique in that it accurately presents the major reli-

gious worldviews; provides fair, hard-hitting criticisms of them; and
accomplishes all this in a brief, easy-to-read way. In my view, this is
now the first book to read for anyone who wants to get at the heart
of important religions and compare them with Christianity."

INTRODUCTION
TO A VAST TOPIC

What if large topics such as philosophy, theology, and biblical studies could be
boiled down to seven key sentences each?

The accessible primers in this collection act as brief introductions to an academic field, with simple
organization: seven key sentences that give readers a bird’s-eye view of the most pivotal truths on that
subject. With engaging, thoughtful, and sometimes humorous language, these books invite readers to
reflect on quotations that many have heard but perhaps have not explored in depth.

PHILOSOPHY | ETHICS

A Moral Vision of Personhood for a Multitude of

Ethical Issues
We live in a culture of commodification. People are too often
defined by what they do or own; they're treated as means to an end.
What goes missing is a deep sense of personhood—the belief that all
humans are unique subjects with inherent worth and the right to
self-determination in authentic communion with others.
In a world dominated by things, Paul Louis Metzger argues, we
must work hard to account for one another's personhood. We need
to cultivate relational structures that honor every human's dignity
in vital interpersonal community. The theological and philosophical
framework known as personalism can help guide us toward such a
culture. Drawing from a wide range of thought leaders, including
Martin Luther King Jr. and Pope John Paul II, Metzger presents a
personalist moral vision founded on the Christian ideals of faith,
hope, and love. He demonstrates how this moral compass can help
us navigate a pluralistic world by applying it to a variety of pressing
ethical issues, including abortion, genetic engineering, immigra-
tion, drone warfare, and more.
When we refuse to reduce our fellow humans—and ourselves—to
mere abstractions or objects, we follow the example of Jesus in
honoring the value of every person and of creaturely life as a whole.

QUESTIONS
IN CHRISTIAN
PHILOSOPHY

How do we know? What should we do? What is real? What is art?

Philosophy, which means “the love of wisdom,” asks such questions in

its pursuit of knowledge and understanding of all facets of life: existence,
knowledge, ethics, art, and more. But what does it mean for Christians to
pursue wisdom when Scripture affirms that the crucified and risen Christ
is “the wisdom of God” (1 Cor 1:24)?
IVP Academic’s Questions in Christian Philosophy (QCP) series seeks
to help readers in their pursuit of wisdom from a Christian perspective by
offering introductory textbooks on the various branches of philosophy.
Designed for students with little or no background in the discipline, this
series draws upon experts in the field and lays a solid foundation for
further philosophical reflection in pursuit of divine wisdom.

Relational Participation in John's Gospel N e w S t u d i e s i n B i bl i c a l T h e o l o g y

The New Testament writers use spatial language and imagery
to portray our relationship with God, speaking both about God
or Christ in us and us in them. Believers are also described as
possessing and participating in divine qualities such as life and
glory. Both aspects are prominent in John's Gospel and letters.
However, outside the Pauline writings, union with Christ has hardly
been addressed in New Testament scholarship. Clive Bowsher seeks
to redress this balance in this NSBT volume.
Life in the Son
In John's Gospel, the oneness of the Father and Son is described as
Exploring Participation and
the Father and Son being "in one another." Bowsher's study shows Union with Christ in John’s Gospel
that union with Christ in John's Gospel and letters is the in-one- and Letters
another relationship of believers with the Father and Son by the
Spirit—the intimate, loving, relational participation of the believer
and God, each in the life, affections, ways, and work of the other.
Insightful and accessible, this volume also explores connections
with the shape of sonship, covenant, and the life of the age to come.
This volume fills a significant gap in the literature and promises to
be a blessing to pastors, preachers, and scholars alike.

"Bowsher's illuminating research expertly explores the contours of

SERIES | THE IVP BIBLE DICTIONARY SERIES

Unique among reference books on the Bible, the volumes of the IVP Bible Dictionary
Series bridge the gap between scholars and those pastors, teachers, students, and laypeople
desiring in-depth treatment of select topics in an accessible and encyclopedia format.

Articles cover traditional and contemporary topics, including cross-sectional themes,

methods of interpretation, significant historical or cultural background, and each Old and
New Testament book as a whole.

In part and in whole, the IVP Bible Dictionary Series presents the fruit of evangelical biblical
scholarship at the intersection of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries—committed to
the authority of Scripture, utilizing the best of critical methods, and maintaining dialogue
with contemporary research and challenges facing the church.

We should read a poem very differently than we read a history book, and we read
both of them differently than we’d read a novel. The same is true when it comes to our
approach to Scripture. That’s why this series does just what its name describes:
helps you understand the proper way to read various books of the Bible.

You can read the Bible on your own, and its main themes will be clear enough.
But an expert can sharpen your understanding and appreciation of the message,
bringing God’s Word into an even clearer focus.

In this series Bible scholar Tremper Longman III examines books of Scripture
and gives you all the background knowledge, literary analysis, and theological
input to help you read the book as it was meant to be read.

B O O K S O N S C I E N CE A N D CH R I S T I A N I T Y

The BioLogos Foundation invites the church and the world to see the harmony between science and
biblical faith as they present an evolutionary understanding of God’s creation. BioLogos Books on Science
and Christianity, a partnership between BioLogos and IVP Academic, aims to advance this mission by
publishing a range of titles from scholarly monographs to textbooks to personal stories.

The books in this series have wide appeal among Christian audiences, from nonspecialists to scholars in
the field. While the authors address a range of topics on science and faith, they support the view of evolutionary
creation, which sees evolution as our current best scientific description of how God brought about the diversity
of life on earth. The series authors are faithful Christians and leading scholars in their fields.

Spectrum Multiview Books offer a range of viewpoints on academic topics about

which Christians clearly disagree. The unique format, pioneered by IVP in 1977,
gives proponents of major positions an opportunity to make their case. Each of the
other contributors then offers a brief response, helping Christians think more care-
fully about what they believe and appreciate the perspectives of others.

Studies in Theology and the Arts (STA) seeks to enable Christians to reflect more deeply
on the relationship between their faith and humanity’s artistic and cultural expressions.
By drawing on the insights of both academic theologians and artistic practitioners, this series encourages thoughtful
engagement with and critical discernment of the full variety of artistic media—including visual art, music,
literature, film, theater, and more—which both embody and inform Christian thinking.

A WEEK IN T HE LIFE SERIES

Have you ever wanted a first-century view of the world of the Gospels? In entertaining historical
fiction, splashed with informative sidebars and images, the volumes in A Week in the Life Series
capture a view of Jesus’ world from the outer framework looking in.
In these imaginative and entertaining narratives, New Testament scholars lead us behind the
veil of centuries to see and experience the historical and social realities of this important era.
Allowing the light of what we do know to conjure possible events, these books are a fun and
informative journey into the wrinkles and folds of lost stories.
Numerous full-page text boxes expand on a variety of aspects of life and culture as we encounter
them in the narrative.

PRAISE FOR A WEEK IN THE LIFE

OF A ROMAN CENTURION

“Masterfully written and extensively researched, this fast-paced

account invites the reader into the first-century world of the
Gospels even while intriguing the reader as a good story should.
In contrast to some scholars’ wooden portrayals of all Jews or
Romans or Syrians as the same, in this story, the characters
are nuanced and come alive.”

Essential Studies in Biblical Theology (ESBT) explores the central or “essential” themes
of the Bible’s grand storyline. Whereas existing series on biblical theology are generally open-
ended, the ESBT will be limited to ten or so volumes. By restricting the entire series,
the scope of the project is established from the beginning.

Taking cues from Genesis 1–3, each author teases out a unique theme throughout the entire sweep
of the history of redemption. Led by series editor, Benjamin J. Gladd, The ESBT project functions as a
whole in that each theme is intentional and each volume does not stand solely on its own merits. The indi-
vidual volumes interlock with one another, and, taken together, form a complete and cohesive unit.
Written for students, church leaders, and laypeople, the ESBT is intended to be an introduction
to core biblical-theological themes of the Bible—accessible, yet rich in content.

Worship of the triune God stands at the heart of the Christian life,
so understanding the many dynamics of Christian worship—
including prayer, reading the Bible, preaching, baptism, the
Lord’s Supper, music, visual art, architecture, and more—is both
a perennial and crucial issue for the church.
With that in mind, the Dynamics of Christian Worship (DCW) series seeks to
enable Christians to grow in their understanding of the many aspects of Christian
worship. By harvesting the fruits of biblical, theological, historical, practical, and
liturgical scholarship and by drawing from a wide range of worshiping contexts
and denominational backgrounds, the DCW series seeks to deepen both the
theology and practice of Christian worship for the life of the church.

The Reformation Commentary on Scripture

collects Protestant Reformation reflections on the
entirety of the Bible, chapter by chapter, introducing
readers to the depth and richness of exegetical
ferment that defined the Reformation.
Each volume contains the biblical text in English alongside the
insights of both well-known and lesser-known Reformers, including
Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans, and Roman Catholics.
By drawing from an array of Reformation resources—including
commentaries, sermons, treatises, and confessions—this series
will equip scholars to better understand the depth
and breadth of Reformation commentary.

“Protestant reformers were fundamentally exegetes as much as

theologians, yet (except for figures like Luther and Calvin) their
commentaries and sermons have been neglected because these
writings are not available in modern editions or languages. . . .
This series is far from being an esoteric study of largely forgotten
voices; this collection of reforming comments, comprehending
every verse and provided with topical headings, will serve
contemporary pastors and preachers very well.”

ELSIE ANNE McK EE

Princeton Theological Seminary

“The Reformation Commentary on Scripture is a major

publishing event—for those with historical interest in the
founding convictions of Protestantism, but even more
for those who care about understanding the Bible.”

Studies in Christian Doctrine and Scripture, edited by Daniel J. Treier and Kevin J.
Vanhoozer, promotes evangelical contributions to systematic theology, seeking fresh
understanding of Christian doctrine through creatively faithful engagement with Scripture
in dialogue with catholic tradition(s).
Volumes in SCDS explore the synergy between Scripture and contemporary issues, rooted in the classic evangelical
commitment to Scripture as well as the perpetual need to contextualize with creative fidelity. Likewise, these volumes
promote historically informed engagements with the crucial themes of classic dogmatics and contemporary systematic
theology in order to promote scholarship that is theologically competent and biblically literate.
This series promotes evangelical contributions to Christian doctrine by reflecting different approaches, appealing to
biblical theology, history of interpretation, theological interpretation of Scripture, and more. Some volumes engage in
detailed exegesis while others appropriate broader biblical themes and patterns with the ultimate goal of promoting the
constructive engagement between Scripture and Christian theology.

THE MEANING OF SINGLENESS

DA NI ELLE TR EW EEK
Drawing upon ancient and contemporary theologians, Dani Treweek offers
biblical, historical, cultural, and theological reflections to retrieve a theology
of singleness for the church today. Far from being a burden, she shows that
singleness presents the church with a foretaste of the eschatological reality that
awaits all of God's people.

a better path. In this book, four experts in psychology and social work present a
Scripturally-grounded model for building and deepening cross-race relation-
ships. These insights and practices will help Christians grow in Christlikeness
and follow his example.

What does "gospel-centered" worship look like for today's church? Scholar,
worship leader, and songwriter Zac Hicks contends that this idea can be found
in Thomas Cranmer's theology of worship, which was shaped by the Protestant
principle of justification by faith alone and reflected in his 1552 edition of the
Book of Common Prayer.

Marsden shows how Edwards's insights can renew our own vision of creation, the
divine, and ourselves.

TODD D. HU NTER

Many of us feel disoriented and unsteady after an endless string of church

T HE OFFENSIVE CHURCH
BRYA N C. LOR ITTS
Crises around race have put the church in a reactive, defensive posture, but

demonic foothold of racism in all its forms.

ADVENT
T ISH H A R R ISON WA R R EN
In this short volume, priest and writer Tish Harrison Warren explores the
three "comings" of Christ that Advent is about: the first coming of Christ
at his incarnation, the second coming at the last day, and the coming of
Christ to meet us in the present moment, to make us holy by his Word and
Sacrament.

Heaven is multiethnic, "a vast multitude from every nation, tribe, people,
and language." But this diverse community shouldn't have to wait until eter-
nity to begin! It can be a reality now. Here, the authors give biblical warrant
for such a community and show how multiethnic churches provide a unique
apologetic for the gospel.

A LAN NOBLE
For most people, sorrow, anxiety, and mental illness are everyday experiences.
The burden of living comes down to mundane choices that we each must
make—like the daily choice to get out of bed. In this deeply personal essay,
Alan Noble considers how carrying on amid great suffering is a powerful
witness to the goodness of life, and of God.
