QUESTION ONE

(a) Calculate the percentage power saving in an Amplitude Modulated (AM) wave
modulated to the depth of 0.6 in which the carrier and one of the sidebands is
removed. [5]

(b) Explain three (3) advantages of SSBSC over DSBSC. [3]

(c) A message signal of frequency 10KHz and peak voltage of 10 volts is used to modulate
a carrier of frequency 1 MHz and peak voltage of 20 volts. Determine;

(i) Modulation index. [2]

(ii) The side bands produced. [3]

QUESTION TWO

(a) Using a block diagram, explain the Filter Method of SSBSC generation. [8]
(b) Using a block diagram, explain the Phase Cancellation Method of SSBSC
generation. [8]

(c) A 500-W DSB-SC system with 100% modulation suppresses 50% of the
Carrier, and the suppressed carrier power goes to the sidebands.
How much power is in the sidebands, and how much is in the carrier?
By how many dB has the sideband power increased? [6]
QUESTION THREE

(a) For an AM DSBFC modulator with a carrier frequency,

fc = 100 kHz and a maximum modulating signal frequency,
fm (max) = 5 kHz, calculate:-

(i) Frequency limits for the upper and lower sidebands. [4]
(ii) Bandwidth [2]
(iii) Upper and lower side frequencies produced when the modulating
Signal is a single frequency 3 kHz tone. [4]
(iv) Draw a well labeled output frequency spectrum. [6]

(b) An Amplitude Modulated (AM) transmitter modulated to a depth of 0.75

radiates 120 watts. Calculate the carrier power in the total radiated power. [4]
